Le réseau “Find My Device” de Google pour les utilisateurs d’Android, qui permettra de localiser des objets à l’aide de millions d’appareils Android, est sur le point d’être lancé, car la norme industrielle sur laquelle il repose est sur le point d’être finalisée.
Une récente mise à jour d’un billet de blog de Google a révélé que la version d’intégration de la norme, intitulée “Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers”, a été publiée le 20 décembre. Android est donc sur le point d’avoir droit à son propre réseau « Find My Device », qui devrait fonctionner comme le réseau « Localiser » d’Apple.
Bien que la version 1.0 du projet ait été envoyée à l’Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), sa finalisation n’a pas encore eu lieu. Ce projet représente une étape importante vers le lancement de la norme et la garantie d’une mise en œuvre multiplateforme.

Les réseaux de traçage existent depuis un certain temps, mais les capacités des réseaux d’Apple et de Google se distinguent, car ils ne nécessitent pas l’installation d’une application sur le dispositif de traçage pour la détection de l’emplacement.
Si cette caractéristique est utile pour retrouver des objets perdus, elle soulève des inquiétudes quant à d’éventuelles utilisations abusives, telles que le harcèlement. Apple a essuyé des critiques à ce sujet lors du lancement d’AirTag, ce qui a conduit à l’introduction d’outils de détection des traceurs indésirables.
Pour remédier à cela, Google a introduit la détection des traceurs indésirables pour Android au cours de l’été, permettant aux appareils Android d’identifier les AirTags à proximité qui pourraient ne pas appartenir au propriétaire de l’appareil.
Initialement, le lancement du réseau “Find My Device” de Google pour Android aurait pu laisser les utilisateurs d’Apple sans protection contre les traceurs indésirables.
Google a toutefois décidé de retarder le lancement du réseau jusqu’à ce qu’Apple mette en place des mesures de protection pour les utilisateurs d’iOS. Les protections sur les deux plateformes sont basées sur une nouvelle spécification industrielle soutenue à la fois par Google et Apple.
Bien que la date exacte de publication de la norme finalisée reste incertaine,
Google avait précédemment indiqué qu’elle devrait être achevée “d’ici à la fin de 2023”. Ce qui est sûr, c’est que les utilisateurs d’Android et d’iOS peuvent s’attendre à des fonctions de confidentialité et de sécurité améliorées d’ici quelques semaines seulement.
