Australians have discovered an unlikely pop-up
store offering shoppers ‘incredible’ deals on clothing,
homewares, food, and electronics.

The temporary Vinnies locations have been set up around Victoria to help shoppers get
through the cost of living crisis ravaging the country.

Vinnies, or the St Vincent de Paul Society, is a charity that works
to provide support and assistance to people in need.

Most items are brand new stock donated by corporate partners including Christmas decorations.

Popular bargains include $10 large jars of Biscoff, $2 bags of Red Rock Deli chips, and discounted shoes from Boston Bros. 

Shoppers will find men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, shoes from top brands, and even electrical goods at the Vinnies pop-up locations. 

Many have purchased vacuums, air fryers, Adidas shoes, printers, and kitchen knives
from previous pop-up shops. 

There is presently a location in Ascot Vale which is open until 3 November, and another in Boronia which will remain open until Christmas – or until stock runs out.

An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you simply didn’t refuse.
Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else. Because caviar, smeared
on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap.
There may have been other things on the menu, but no one paid them much heed.
This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

went quiet. Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club
in another Mayfair backstreet. But a £2,000 a
year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.

Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the
stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by
the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a
loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the
background. The whole place is scented with gilded
ennui.

Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad
in diaphanous couture. They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar
and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes
far better than it ought to. Next door, a large table fills
with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.

We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm
and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu
performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would
have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment,
insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a study in tuber art.
A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises
them to the sublime. Only the price, at just under £150
each, is ridiculous. But there are few better dishes on earth.
I’d eat this every day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously.
That’s the problem with caviar. One taste is never enough.

the views of everyday Australians, unlike the two-party-dominated

to podcast host Joe Rogan  complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped
in the two-party system’.

‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting
thing that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe countered.

‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to bring a non-party-line series of points to the argument.

‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making both of the main parties re-examine who they are
and what they stand for.

Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how
US politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.

There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform
parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.

Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

shoppers ‘incredible’ deals on clothing, homewares, food, and electronics.

The temporary Vinnies locations have been set up around Victoria to help shoppers get
through the cost of living crisis ravaging the country.

Vinnies, or the St Vincent de Paul Society, is a charity that works to provide support and assistance to people in need.

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with
the budget remaining static.

Horror movies topped the domestic box office charts and an Oscar contender
got off to a sparkling start this weekend. « Smile 2, » in its first weekend, and « Terrifier 3″ in its second proved to
be the big draws for general movie audiences in North America, while the Palme d´Or winner »Anora » got
the best per-theater average in over a year.

« Smile 2 » was the big newcomer, taking first place with a better than expected $23 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Parker Finn returned to write and direct the sequel
to the supernatural horror « Smile, » his debut. Originally intended for streaming,
Paramount pivoted and sent the movie to theaters in the fall
of 2022. « Smile » became a sleeper hit at the box office, earning
some $217 million against a $17 million budget.

The sequel, starring Naomi Scott as a pop star, was rewarded with a bit of a bigger budget, and a
theatrical commitment from the start. Playing on 3,619 screens, it opened slightly higher than the first’s $22 million.

Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation´s « The Wild Robot »
in its fourth weekend with $10.1 million, bumping
it past $100 million in North America. Family films often have long
lives in theaters, particularly ones as well reviewed as « The Wild Robot, » and some have
speculated that it got a bump this weekend from teenagers buying tickets
for the PG-rated family film and then sneaking into
« Terrifier 3, » which is not rated, instead. Either way,
Damien Leone´s demon clown movie, which cost only
$2 million to produce, is doing more than fine with legitimate ticket buyers.

It added an estimated $9.3 million, bringing its total to $36.2 million.

« Rumors like that are PR gold, » said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for
Comscore. « There´s no better indication that that movie is red hot right now. »

The No. 1 openings for « Smile 2 » this weekend and « Terrifier 3 » last were only possible because of the failure of « Joker: Folie à Deux. »
That big budget sequel continued its death march in its third weekend, falling another 69%
to earn $2.2 million, bringing its domestic
total to $56.4 million.

Warner Bros. has a better performer in « Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, » which placed fourth
in its seventh weekend with an additional $5 million, bringing its domestic total to $284 million. Star
Michael Keaton also had another film open this weekend – the father-daughter
dramedy « Goodrich » which stumbled in with only $600,000 from 1,055 locations.

Rounding out the top five was the romantic tearjerker
« We Live In Time, » which expanded to 985 theaters following last weekend’s debut on 5 screens.

The A24 release starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh earned $4.2 million over the weekend.
Audiences were 85% under 35 and 70% female, according to exit polls.
The well-reviewed film will expand further next weekend.

One of the other brightest spots of the weekend was Sean Baker´s « Anora, » which opened in six locations in New York and Los Angeles and earned an estimated $630,000.
That´s a $105,000 per theater average, the best since « Asteroid City´s » $142,000 average last summer.
The Neon release, a sensation at Cannes and a likely Oscar contender,
stars Mikey Madison as a New York sex worker who falls for the son of a
Russian oligarch.

After several weeks of would-be awards contenders and buzzy
films (« Piece by Piece, » « Saturday Night, » « The Apprentice » among them) fizzling with audiences, « Anora´s » success is a promising sign that moviegoers will still seek out
arty, adult fare.

« For moviegoers, there´s a lot on offer with something in every type of movie in every category, » Dergarabedian said.
« I think we´re going to have a really strong home stretch with a great combination of movies big and small. »

The Walt Disney Co. also made a splash with several re-releases.
« The Nightmare Before Christmas » got a place in the top 10 with
$1.1 million, while « Hocus Pocus » made $841,000.

Next weekend will have a major studio comic book movie with « Venom: The Last Dance »
as well as an awards movie in the papal thriller « Conclave » vying for audience attention.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and
Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final
domestic figures will be released Monday.

The cost for one of London’s most pricey apartments
will begin at £35million – with 600 megarich customers already securing a
spot on the waiting list.

Pricing details of billionaire John Caudwell’s spectacular 1 Mayfair development have now been revealed and only those with the
deepest pockets can hope to afford one of the lavish pads.

The cheapest apartment on offer is expected to be an eye-watering
£35million – around 70 times the average cost
of a house in the capital.

Due to complete in Spring 2026 the scheme will easily surpass London’s
previous record breaker, the £1.3billion One Hyde Park development in Knightsbridge.

Caudwell told The Standard that there are already
more than 600 prospective buyers on a waiting list of billionaires and centi-millionaires who
have expressed an interest in making a purchase at the scheme.

There will be just 24 ‘principal residences’ in the property including lateral
apartments, penthouses and townhouses with
up to five bedrooms, and five more smaller ‘pieds-à-terre’ apartments.

The size of the homes has not yet been disclosed but the developers say even the most
modest property will start with a guide price exceeded by only a handful of mansions in London’s richest
neighbourhoods. 

The average price of all 29 units – which cover 300,000 sq ft – will be close to £70million.

The entry level price of £35million is 70 times the average London property
value of around £500,000, and 130 times the national average price of £268,000 revealed in today’s Nationwide house price survey for November.

The development’s basement is being dug down to 90ft below ground level to make room
for a health spa with a 20 metre swimming pool as well as a
car park.

The designs were led by New York based architect Robert Stern and practice
RAMSA, with contractors, Mace, the construction managers and PJ Carey responsible for the creation of the basement substructure and superstructure.

Due to complete in Spring 2026 after a six years build the scheme will easily surpass
London’s previous record breaker, the £1.3billion One Hyde Park

members of the construction team.

The ceremony was marked by the final steel
rafter, one of 79 at roof level, being put into place on the top of the nine-storey
main apartment building.

No expense has been spared on the building’s interior and it will
feature a ceiling with hand-painted frescos based on Michelangelo’s Map of the Heavens in the Vatican, a reception room with a double height ceiling and 18ft high
French windows overlooking the garden.

There will also be a Palace of Versailles Hall of Mirrors-style
crystal callery, created from over 1,264 hand-set pieces of cut glass, a library and a garden gallery,

TOKYO, Oct 29 (Reuters) – A shock election result in Japan, Washington’s key
Asian security ally, and the United States’ potentially destabilising presidential election next week
could provide an opportunity for China and other rivals to test Western resolve in East Asia.

Analysts say China could increase intrusions into Japanese territory
as well as step up pressure on Taiwan, while North
Korea, which has been deepening its security cooperation with Russia, could intensify ballistic missile testing.

A general election in Japan on Sunday dealt the worst defeat for the long-serving ruling coalition in 15 years, leaving
it wrangling for support from opposition parties to keep control of the powerful lower house.

« From Beijing’s viewpoint, this (election result) signals an ideal scenario: a politically immobilised Japan, » said Tomohiko Taniguchi,
a former adviser to late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who steered
Japan away from decades of pacifism.

« China’s intrusions into Japan’s air space and waters are likely to intensify, while military provocations toward Taiwan may well become routine, » he added.

In the wake of the election, both Tokyo and Washington have voiced commitment to Japan-U.S.
security cooperation. Beijing has said the election is Japan’s « internal matter ».

But the failure of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has ruled
for almost all of Japan’s post-war history, and its coalition partner to secure a
majority is the latest sign of disgruntled voters in U.S.-allied countries rejecting established parties, following recent elections in France and Germany.

While those European nations are pivotal to the North Atlantic
Treaty Organisation’s defence of Europe, Japan is crucial to Washington’s security strategy
in Asia. It hosts the biggest overseas deployment of U.S. forces across an archipelago stretching from Taiwan to Russia’s far east, that hems in China and is
a frontline defence against North Korean missiles.

In response to escalating Chinese military activity around its
islands and nearby Taiwan, including more regular drills with Russia and the first ever intrusion by a Chinese plane into
Japanese airspace in August, Tokyo is undertaking its largest military expansion since World
War Two.

That five-year plan unveiled in 2022 will double defence spending to pay for new weapons, including longer-range missiles with enough range to strike
targets on the Chinese mainland.

« Any indication that Japan’s defence policy initiatives could slow down or become less ambitious would encourage China and North Korea to claim that Japan is weak and belittle Washington´s efforts to bolster the U.S.-Japan alliance, » said
Nicholas Szechenyi, a U.S.-Japan relations expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, an American think tank.

That comes ahead of a possible U.S. presidential election win for Republican Donald Trump,
who tried to pressure Tokyo to pay more for U.S. military support during his previous 2017-21 term.
Polls show the election is an extremely close race between Trump and his Democratic rival
Kamala Harris.

Trump, whose supporters stormed the Capitol Building after he lost the 2020 election, a result he
attempted to overturn, says he will cry fraud and not accept the results if he fails again.

ADVERSARIES SMILING

« I don’t think Japan will back away from national security, but there is no doubt distractions will hamper proactive action, » said Joseph Kraft, a
financial political analyst at Rorschach Advisory in Tokyo.
« I’m sure the Western world’s adversaries are smiling, » he added.

At a news conference on Monday, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said he was
committed to the LDP’s defence spending and deeper security
ties with Washington.

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller echoed Ishiba’s
sentiment, saying the U.S.-Japan relationship was a « cornerstone » of peace and security around the world and
that he did not see that changing due to election outcomes in either country.

As Chinese military power grows, Washington is relying more on Tokyo.
In April, the allies announced a historic revamp of their security alliance, including plans to co-develop missiles and upgrade the U.S.

military command in Japan.

Now, potential power-sharing deals between the LDP and smaller parties, that won over
many voters with promises of tax cuts, will further complicate
the thorny issue of how Japan funds key defence projects, according to Tobias Harris of Japan Foresight, a political risk advisory.

At least 14 people have been killed by a major earthquake in Vanuatu,
with the full extent of the damage still not clear.

At lunchtime on Tuesday, a 7.3 magnitude tremor rattled nearby Port Vila for 30 seconds, causing destruction in the capital.

Katie Greenwood, the Red Cross’ Pacific head, said the Vanuatu government
had confirmed a death toll of 14 and hundreds of injuries.

Footage and photos broadcast by local outlet VBTC and on social
media lays bare the devastation in Port Vila.

A building housing the US, UK, French and New Zealand diplomatic posts was among the worst hit, with the
bottom floor of the US embassy crushed by the above floors.

Remarkably, the US and other nations have reported all of their staff
to be safe.

Others have not been so lucky.

In a VBTC broadcast, caretaker Prime Minister Charlot Salwai issued a
state of emergency for seven days, and instituted a curfew – except
for essential services – from 6pm to 6am.

Telecommunications failures after the earthquake have made confirming the scale of the
harm and damage difficult.

Those that were able to communicate with the outside world were largely able to do so through Starlink, including journalist Dan McGarry.

« I know of one fatality according to police stationed at Port Vila Central Hospital, and I saw with my own eyes three others on gurneys … I’m expecting the casualty figure to rise, » he told AAP about three hours
after the earthquake.

Mr McGarry has documented landslips around the capital,
including a major blockage of a key road near the country’s chief international port, in addition to
destruction of buildings.

Many photos on social media show collapsed buildings, one which has crumpled cars underneath.

« People died and many more were hurt. Some have lost their home, and many will find it hard to get back to work. Repairs will likely stretch for years, as they always do in the wake of disaster, » Mr McGarry posted on X.

« But people are pulling together as only Vanuatu knows how. We will get through this. We always do. »

More than 80 islands make up Vanuatu, and it is also unclear how the 350,000-strong population is faring in towns and settlements outside the capital.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong called the disaster a « dreadful tragedy, » and with acting Pacific Minister Matt Keogh, said Australia would be rushing to its neighbour’s aid.

« Australia stands with the people of Vanuatu … we are family and we will always be there in times of need, » the pair said in a
statement.

Mr Jeangene Vilmer said France was working with Australia and New Zealand to co-ordinate the disaster response.

New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters said a military surveillance plane would fly over Vanuatu on Wednesday to assess damage, with further support to follow when the airport opened.

The disaster has also occurred at a moment of political turmoil in the Melanesian country.

Mr Salwai dissolved parliament last month, setting the stage for a snap election on January 14, only for opposition MPs to mount a constitutional challenge to the move.
