La vice-première ministre, Chrystia Freeland, condamne la brutalité policière à la suite d’une altercation violente entre des agents de la police de Gatineau et une diplomate sénégalaise.
La semaine dernière, le gouvernement du Sénégal a allégué que la police de Gatineau (Québec) avait exercé une » violence physique et morale humiliante » sur la diplomate en la menottant et en la battant lors d’une altercation qui s’est terminée par l’hospitalisation de la diplomate.
Lundi, on a demandé à Mme Freeland ce qui, dans cet incident, était inacceptable et si le Canada avait présenté des excuses au Sénégal. Le gouvernement du Sénégal avait demandé à Ottawa de « dénoncer vigoureusement et de condamner fermement cet acte raciste et barbare. »
« Tout cas de brutalité, de brutalité policière, à l’égard de quiconque dans notre pays, qu’il s’agisse d’un Canadien, d’un visiteur ou d’un diplomate, est, bien sûr, tout à fait inacceptable », a déclaré Mme Freeland.
« C’est une chose sur laquelle notre gouvernement est clair. Et je veux assurer à tous les Canadiens et à tous les diplomates qui sont ici que nous sommes très, très clairs sur ce point. »
Affaires mondiales Canada a publié une déclaration au cours du week-end dans laquelle il se dit « extrêmement préoccupé » par le traitement présumé du diplomate par la police, qualifiant l’incident de « tout simplement inacceptable ».
CBC News a contacté Affaires mondiales Canada pour s’enquérir de la possibilité de présenter des excuses au Sénégal. Le ministère a indiqué qu’un tweet publié mardi après-midi indiquait que la ministre des Affaires étrangères Mélanie Joly avait parlé avec son homologue sénégalaise, la ministre des Affaires étrangères et des Sénégalais de l’extérieur Aïssata Tall Sall, plus tôt dans la journée.
