Productrice de «Debbo», la série réalisée par Abdoulahad Wone et sélectionnée au 29e Fespaco, Gabrielle Kane réaffirme son engagement en faveur des femmes.
Féministe, elle apporte, à travers cette œuvre, une réponse à la mauvaise image que, selon elle, le secteur audiovisuel sénégalais donne de la femme.Pour votre première production audiovisuelle, votre série Debbo est sélectionnée à la 29e édition du Fespaco du 22 janvier au 1er mars 2025.
Qu’est-ce que cela représente pour vous ?
C’est effectivement ma première production cinématographique, et ce n’était pas du tout évident. Ma toute première production, c’était il y a deux ans avec Ngaaka Blindé, Sidy Diop et One Lyrical, avec le concept Djiggen. J’avais trouvé pertinent le fait que des hommes prennent la parole pour les droits des femmes car, contrairement à nos idéaux, de plus en plus d’hommes y sont attachés.
La sélection de Debbo, qui veut dire femme en peul, au Fespaco, est un encouragement pour une profane du monde du cinéma comme moi.
C’est une production qui n’était qu’une idée dans un coin de ma tête et que je traînais depuis quelques années. L’avoir réalisée et être sélectionnée sur près de 700 séries, pour une première production, est rassurant et encourageant pour la suite.
Quels thématiques et enjeux sont abordés par cette série ?
Les enjeux sont d’abord sociétaux. J’étais quelque peu excédée par l’image que l’on donne des femmes dans le monde audiovisuel sénégalais, surtout au niveau des séries que nous regardons. Nous ne sommes pas que des plastiques pour le fantasme ou des utérus pour l’enfantement.
Les femmes sont et valent plus que cela, et il nous incombe, à nous femmes, de changer cette vision réductrice que la société nous impose.
Cela ne reflète pas nos réalités et contribue à dégrader l’image et l’estime des femmes sénégalaises. Elles sont courageuses et travailleuses. Donc les réduire dans le cinéma à des «saintes nitouches» (sic) ultra dépigmentées, aux formes méga généreuses et éternellement en position de victimes, est une insulte à l’intelligence féminine.
Dans Debbo, chaque épisode traite d’une thématique liée aux violences faites aux femmes : l’inceste, les violences conjugales, le viol, l’excision, entre autres. Il y a aussi de belles intrigues à suspense portées par d’excellents acteurs et actrices reconnus, auprès desquels j’ai beaucoup appris. Nous ne voulions pas d’histoires où les femmes sont victimes des hommes.
Donc, les actrices sont fortes, intrigantes, cyniques et parfois même plus destructrices que peuvent l’être les hommes.
Après mon engagement social, je me lance dans une autre forme d’engagement, à travers le cinéma, pour défendre le droit des femmes. Je pense que le son et l’image sont des armes très puissantes que nous pouvons mettre au service de notre combat.
Comment êtes-vous arrivée à cette production ?
Comme je le disais, c’est une idée qui me trottait dans la tête depuis un moment. Et comme je suis un peu têtue, quand j’ai un projet en tête, il faut que je le réalise. Au début, il était question d’en faire un long métrage.
Puis, en observant l’effervescence des séries sénégalaises, j’ai été influencée par un ami qui m’a mise en contact avec Abdoulahad Wone, le réalisateur, dont le talent et l’expertise ne sont plus à démontrer. Nous avons beaucoup travaillé ensemble avec l’auteur et showrunner
A. Dath Fall, qui a été excellent.
Ils ont réussi à me convaincre de jouer le rôle principal pour mieux porter l’histoire et les causes que nous voulions défendre. Résultat des courses : nous avons été sélectionnés parmi des centaines de séries à l’échelle du continent. C’est plutôt cool !
Comment a été cette expérience d’actrice ? Comment vous êtes-vous préparée ?
L’expérience était surprenante. On ne le croirait pas, mais je suis de nature timide, et avoir une dizaine de personnes qui vous observent, caméra à la main, était un exercice enrichissant. Passer d’émotion en émotion au début n’était pas simple, surtout les scènes où il fallait pleurer ou se mettre en colère.
Pour me préparer, j’ai dû prendre un coach de théâtre afin d’avoir les bases, car j’allais avoir de grandes figures comme Adja Nationale, Lamine Cissokho et d’autres en face. Je ne voulais pas être un boulet pour ces grands professionnels du métier. Et heureusement, sur le plateau, ils m’ont aussi tendu la main pour répéter avant.
C’est un métier émotionnellement difficile, contrairement à ce que l’on pense. Je ne suis pas près de recommencer de sitôt !
Comment avez-vous financé cette série ? On a parlé de centaines de millions injectés ?
Peu de gens nous ont soutenus. Très peu, même. Seuls deux partenaires nous ont accompagnés, et cette sélection est aussi la leur pour nous avoir fait confiance alors que personne ne l’a fait. Dès que vous parlez d’engagement, de briser les codes et de défendre la cause des femmes, les gens ne répondent plus, surtout les entreprises.
Ce n’est pas très courageux, mais nous l’avons été pour nous et pour eux, en terminant ce beau projet malgré les refus d’accompagnement.
Pour le reste, j’ai dû mobiliser mes fonds propres. J’ai aussi été soutenue par un homme exceptionnel, bien qu’il ait pensé tout au long du tournage que j’étais uniquement productrice. Quant aux accusations portées contre cette production, elles sont aussi farfelues que les personnes qui les ont diffusées. Beaucoup de fausses informations ont circulé pour dissuader les annonceurs et sponsors de nous soutenir.
On a même tenté de retourner les autorités contre cette production.
Cela ne nous a pas empêchés de terminer notre travail et d’être sélectionnés au niveau continental. Cette sélection est un pied de nez à nos détracteurs qui n’ont que des paroles nuisibles face à nos actions. Debbo est une œuvre artistique engagée, avec des acteurs qui le sont tout autant.
Nous allons vers des lendemains plus contraignants pour les droits des femmes au Sénégal et en Afrique, donc il faut être présent de différentes manières. Je suis très branchée culture, c’était aussi l’envie de proposer une œuvre artistique engagée pour montrer que l’art sert aussi à porter des causes nobles.
Quels sont vos objectifs pour le Fespaco et la diffusion de la série au Sénégal ?
Comme tout sélectionné, nous souhaiterions remporter le trophée. Ce serait la cerise sur le gâteau ! Mais nous sommes déjà très heureux de la reconnaissance que représente cette sélection pour une première production réalisée par une équipe de jeunes Sénégalais venant d’horizons bien différents, avec tant de dynamisme et de volonté.
Pour la diffusion, nous sommes en pourparlers avancés, mais nous prenons le temps de bien choisir où, quand et comment, parce que le plus dur a été fait. J’espère que les spectateurs prendront autant de plaisir à regarder la série que nous en avons pris à la produire.
D’autres projets en vue ?
Oui, beaucoup de projets même sur plusieurs sujets, mais avec toujours le même engagement et les mêmes convictions. Nous sommes dans ce pays et nous comptons bien continuer à y faire des choses.
