La fréquence de l’arrêt cardiaque au Sénégal est un sujet de préoccupation aussi bien chez les populations que chez les spécialistes. Le docteur Kane avait avancé que cette situation s’explique par le fait que les hypertendus ne surveillent pas leur tension artérielle et que beaucoup ne savent pas qu’ils ont l’hypertension artérielle. « Un adulte sur 3 est hypertendu au Sénégal. Mais environ la moitié de ces hypertendus connaissent leur statut d’hypertension artérielle. Autrement dit, l’autre moitié est hypertendue sans le savoir ».
Ce qu’il faut faire en cas d’arrêt cardiaque
On n’estime que 40. 000 personnes décèdent chaque année d’un arrêt cardiaque dans le monde. Beaucoup d’entre elles pourraient être sauvées si les premiers témoins agissent sans attendre pour relancer le cœur. Il est donc essentiel de savoir reconnaître un arrêt cardiaque et appliquer des gestes qui sauvent. Le témoin d’un arrêt cardiaque doit faire trois gestes pour sauver la victime. Il doit d’abord appeler les services d’urgence, ensuite faire le massage et enfin utiliser un défibrillateur. Dans ces circonstances, chaque minute compte. Une course contre la montre est engagée. Chaque minute gagnée augmente de plus de 10 % la chance de survie. Selon Dolcissimo, l’arrêt cardiaque provoque aujourd’hui près de 130 décès par jour, soit dix fois plus que les accidents de la route. Seulement 5 % des personnes ayant subi un arrêt cardiaque y survivent.
Le défaut d’intervention précoce par un massage cardiaque et/ou une défibrillation du cœur est préjudiciable. Pourtant, cette urgence survient 7 fois sur 10 devant un ou plusieurs témoins, or moins de 40 % d’entre eux font les gestes qui sauvent. Dans ces cas, les chances de survie pourraient être augmentées si les premiers témoins de l’accident savaient réagir en réalisant les gestes de premiers secours. 4 victimes sur 5 ayant survécu à un arrêt cardiaque grâce aux gestes qui sauvent.
