«La reine Elisabeth 2 n’est jamais venue au Sénégal pour une visite officielle», assure Ousmane Camara, qui fut, à l’époque, directeur de la Sécurité publique du Sénégal. L’homme, qui a fait partie de la délégation qui a accompagné la Reine lors de son court séjour à Dakar en 1968, a tenu à expliquer l’histoire de cette photo.
«La reine devait rejoindre son époux au Brésil. A l’époque, pour rallier Rio de Janeiro. Il n’y avait pas de vol direct entre le Royaume Uni et le Brésil. On ne pouvait pas faire les longs courriers. Donc, elle a effectué une escale au Sénégal», indique l’ancien Ambassadeur du Sénégal en Angleterre sur L’Obs.
Et d’ajouter : «À cette époque, l’aéroport de Yoff n’était pas très moderne. Le Président Senghor, pour lui faire passer le temps, lui a proposé alors de fair une visite au niveau du phare des Mamelles, Une requête que la Reine ElizabethII accepta. L’escale de 45 minutes sur le territoire Sénégal a été la cause de sa présence au pays et non une visite officielle.»
