There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured technical precision. Duck à
l’orange sees a plump breast cooked rare, the skin crisp,
the sauce just the right side of bitter. It comes with a fat potato
fondant and cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump of
lamb, four vast just-pink slices, drenched in the stickiest,
most gloriously intense of gravies; by its side, a tiny shepherd’s pie, one
bite of pure ovine brilliance.

Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully sharp,
with damson sorbet (this part of the Lake District is
famed for its damsons); along with a banana soufflé, this time the classic version but ethereal, served with vanilla ice cream and a pot of sticky-toffee sauce to pour deep into its molten centre.

This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately done, in the
sort of pub designed for lingering. It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early
start. But first, another bottle of wine. Dinners like this are too rare to be rushed.

Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the
views of everyday Australians, unlike the two-party-dominated
system in the United States. 

The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response
to podcast host Joe Rogan  complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’.

‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe
countered.

‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to bring a
non-party-line series of points to the argument.

‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us.
In that it’s making both of the main parties
re-examine who they are and what they stand for.

Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.

There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties, but these
receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.

Independent candidates can also stand and have
been known to perform well on occasion.

Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party
campaign in the 1968 US election which saw him garner 10 million votes and take five southern states,
while another disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states on a similarly racist
platform but with only a million votes.

The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy
Jr., was poised to get on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent
candidate before he pulled out and backed Republican Donald Trump. 

He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet. 

Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.

The former New York property developer had even considered running for president
in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement – formed by former
third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of
the popular vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes.

Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the
Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying six states including California and coming
second ahead of Republican William Taft.

Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians who have taken votes away from the two traditional parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition

This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now have 12
senators and four members in the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms but are fiscally conservative have been labelled ‘teal’

This is because they have combined their ‘green’ views on climate with the traditional ‘blue’ approach of the centre-right Liberal Party
on economics.

Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime
minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the
2019 election.

In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat
from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election. 

She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 16, with this tally including the four Greens, three
conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie
and Helen Haines.

Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired in August, has recently resurfaced in teal social media adverts.

They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court, who founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding to some
teal candidates.

Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were teals,
however.

Queensland state MP before serving the past three decades
in federal parliament as the MP for the regional far north Queensland
electorate of Kennedy. 

Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a bid to teach school kids
how to fire rifles and a desire to build a missile
shield across northern Australia.

The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 17 in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals in protest at
its opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament. 

The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house – the
highest proportion of non major party MPs since Federation in 1901.

The original Smile, released in September 2022,

An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you simply didn’t
refuse. Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else.
Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high
on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap. There may
have been other things on the menu, but no one paid them much heed.
This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

are few better dishes on earth…only the price, at just under £150, is
ridiculous’

Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and
transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s. It prospers
to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow,
meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.

Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome –
albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps,
indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs
in the background. The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty,
clad in diaphanous couture. They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to.
Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.

We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such
effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst
into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream,
are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge
of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime.
Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous. But there
are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if I could.

But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.
One taste is never enough.

Joker: Folie À Deux — starring Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix — has garnered
the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history as the film bombed at the box office
on opening night. 

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday, October 4,
but it only raked in $20 million at the domestic box office,

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn). 

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for a comic book movie.

Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but the number has since drastically dropped. 

Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters –
and eventually landed a little over $1 billion in the global box office. 

The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips – had a budget of between $55 and
$70 million. However, the budget increased for Folie
À Deux to around $200 million. 

The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews
from both critics and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the 76th
Venice International Film Festival. 

Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original Score. 

The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival
last month in September, where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.   

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a
critic score of 32%

However, audiences have since taken to X after the movie released
in theaters on Friday – and shared their
opinions on the sequel, which features musical sequences. 

One fan penned, ‘Joaquin Phoenix don’t deserve this. what happened to
the script?’ while another added, ‘is it that bad,’ followed
by a crying face emoji. 

‘Ironically I feel that a musical, if done well, could have been a good choice.
It’d show how much of an unreliable narrator Fleck is,’ one typed. 

‘But with some original songs, that keep everything vague, not just
covers. Also when I heard of the ending I snorted fr.’ 

A social media user wrote, ‘Stop making sequels as musicals if the original wasn’t a musical.’ 

‘Maybe he [Phillips] only had an hour long movie, and decided to randomly add musical
scenes to fill the runtime,’ one penned. 

‘Joker downfall really needs to be studied,’ another shared,

Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but said it lacked any thrill. 

The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker
is best remembered as one of the most subversive and original
films of the last decade, while its hugely anticipated sequel is just
as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.

Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just
two stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s
$1billion success.

Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared
to have no idea what to do with her. 

Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw
claimed the movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Phillips discussed whether he would be interested in making a third Joker film or a movie centered around Gaga’s character;

The anthology film follows Jane, who tumbles through a gauntlet of surreal, beautiful, and heartbreaking adventures,
each one more unexpected than the last. While dropping off her daughter at a summer camp for the first time, she encourages
her reticent child to engage in new experiences.

Jane finds herself heeding her own advice.

Designer Sergio Guardi showed up in a gray tweed suit for the event,
while actress Lupe Carranza went with a black dress and a red-patterned blouse.

It reportedly took only 15 days to shoot The Seven Faces Of
Jane, starting in late August 2021, which was still
during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Bentonville Film Festival, which focuses on diversity, was
founded by actress Geena Davis and ARC Entertainment executive Trevor Drinkwater.

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio. 

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge –
The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called
‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his
book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’,
but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades
from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime
Minister has categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London,
Los Angeles and Honolulu. 

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese
chose to shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot. 

He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was hiding his
employment history. 

‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,
‘ the Prime Minister said. 

But before the book even gets to the contents
page there is a photo of Aston that refers to him as the
then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook
before Scott Morrison. 

‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the first
line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night,
just before his book launch. 

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about
him the Prime Minister made. 

‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know,
I’ve seen this many times with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part
in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he said.

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who is a
former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the Prime
Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.

‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which is, did
you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays
when you were the Transport Minister? The answer is « yes » and he’s
desperately trying to avoid saying it.’

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said
the Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over
the flight upgrades.

Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many
people are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent, the latest blow to his credibility has led
to calls for him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though. 

‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get this
far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone
who reads the book will learn that this book is not
a hit job on Anthony Albanese. This book is about Qantas. 

‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the aisle,
Labor, Liberal, National, you name it. They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.

‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia.
I’m not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what
this book is about and it never was.’

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia and
eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese. 

‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long
time and that kind of behaviour is quite
normalised to him, is what I’ve seen. 

‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets
and sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis. 

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12
years and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).

‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of the International Grand Slam.

He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.

‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the claims in the book are) just another example of that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the
airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded. 

The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had
a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if
the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.

‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade
where the ticket is converted and you are guaranteed.
You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going « Geez, I hope there is a spare seat ».

‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who can issue those
types of upgrades is the CEO. No other executive can do that.

‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these
upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there. 

‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to
go back.

‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …

‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go
flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel. 

‘A normal person would say « Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events. 

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

Anyone who knows me has invariably been subject to a spiel about how
much I love Claudia Winkleman. In part, it’s because she’s so silly,
and in part, it’s because I’m a huge fan of everything she presents, from Strictly
to The Traitors. 

But even more than any of that, it’s because I’m obsessed
with everything she wears. I’ve spent a fortune copying her exact outfits, from her Sister Jane heart cutout dress to a bedazzled Nadine Merabi blazer that I definitely
don’t go anywhere fancy enough to wear.

Since 2005, Claudia has worked with stylist Sinead McKeefry
to perfect her signature style. I’d describe it as
soft goth: lots of black, velvet and chunky knits, with a fair few sequins and
prints (particularly tartan) thrown in. I’m not
alone in my reverence: there are entire Instagram accounts
dedicated to tracking down the presenter’s outfits. But while they
offer incredibly useful style inspo, two issues arise
repeatedly: Claudia’s clothes are usually hugely expensive
or sold out (or both).

So when the Strictly host stepped out in a typically preppy black velvet mini dress on Sunday,
you’d be forgiven for assuming it was by some top-end designer.
Well, you’d be wrong. The mini dress actually came courtesy

Following her panned performance in the flop movie Joker:
Folie à Deux, the New York City native,
38, is releasing a single titled Disease, set to be released Friday.

Diesase, the first of songs from her forthcoming seventh album, was teased Tuesday on the
Grammy-winning artist’s Instagram account, as she captioned the image:
‘DISEASE 10.25.’

In a teaser clip from the viewpoint of an approaching vehicle, the actress-singer, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, sported a black mane as she ran from it.

Gaga’s label Universal Music on Monday put out pre-saves for
the forthcoming single, with links to Spotify and Apple
Music, Variety reported.

users have confessed to trying.

A hilarious Reddit thread, named ‘what is a sexual
fantasy you do not recommend’, features the bizarre sexcapades of
commenters — many of who bitterly regret their risqué acts.

The thread began with a question from user u/Fantastic-Ant-4429, who asked: ‘What is a sexual fantasy
you do not recommend fulfilling?’

Having sex in the desert, a library and on a plane were some of the most upvoted
responses, Huffpost reported. 

Reddit user u/ElPresidente714 admitted to trying to have sex in the desert
at night when coming back from Vegas. But in reality, they were
met with ‘creepy crawly desert things don’t sleep at night’.

Another, u/DonSmitty said a ‘buddy in high school’ covered his girlfriend (including her
genitals) in chocolate syrup. But it didn’t end well — she
got infected with a ‘crazy’ yeast infection. 

Doing it in a storage unit was another unusual fantasy which ended badly.

User u/isthisfark wrote: ‘There’s a closing time and if
you miss it you’ll get stuck behind the gates for the night.

Then the people who live there start rustling.’

Not everyone pursues or even plans to act on their sexual fantasies in real life.

But a handful of those who have tried to make their browser history a reality have confessed they didn’t quite go to plan — a
thread on Reddit revealed

The thread began with a question from user u/Fantastic-Ant-4429 , who asked: ‘What is a sexual fantasy you do not recommend fulfilling?’ (pictured,

Nationally 55 per cent of Brits reported having sex at least one a week, this rising to 59 per cent of men and

Threesomes were also suggested to be a bad idea with user
