Ancien militant de And-Jëf, Racine Talla avait tourné le dos à ce parti pour rejoindre le Parti démocratique sénégalais (PDS), à l’époque au pouvoir avec comme Macky Sall, numéro 2 de ce parti et Premier ministre. Dès que Macky Sall avait perdu tous ses privilèges au PDS et au sein de l’Etat, il n’avait hésité une seule fois à lui tourner le dos, et à rejoindre avec arme et bagages la Génération du concret de Karim Meïssa Wade qui combattait à l’époque l’actuel Président de la République.
C’est parce qu’il avait été défénestré comme un malpropre de la Direction de l’éducation et de l’information pour la santé qu’il était retourné honteusement à nouveau auprès de Macky Sall que tout le monde pressentait à l’époque comme étant le futur Président de la République du Sénégal. Une fois, Macky Sall au pouvoir, c’est toutes sortes de lobbyings qu’il avait exercées rien que pour prendre le poste de Directeur général de la RTS à la tête de Babacar Diagne.

It is not clear when Apollonia’s relationship with Prince began or ended
as he was dating another one of the stars of Purple
Rain during the making of the film, Susan Moonsie.
Prince and Beyonce famously joined forces onstage at the 2004 Grammy Awards,
performing a medley that included his iconic 1984
single Purple Rain.
Their duet also included her fan favorite
number Crazy In Love, which saw him accompany her on the
electric guitar.
Afterwards, Prince gave an interview in which he shared his appraisal of
Beyonce’s musical abilities when they worked together.
‘I was really curious as to how much she knew musically, and
I was really pleased to find out that she knew a lot
about scales – Mixolydian scales and Egyptian styles and
different things like that,’ he said.
‘And I was just trying to show her some chords on the piano and help her to
respect the fact that if she learns piano à la Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles and things like that,
the sky’s the limit as to what she could do, ’cause she’s so very talented.’
Prince died of an accidental overdose in 2016 at the age of just 57.

A woman has been slammed online after showing off the outfit she lovingly made to wear
at her step-daughter’s wedding.
The DIY frock, which was inspired by a $2,500 Stella McCartney gown,
was described as an embarrassment and a ‘complete
train wreck’ after screen shots were shared to a wedding shaming
group on Facebook.
In her original post, the woman said she wanted something
special to wear as step-mother of the bride.
She came across the Stella McCartney Rewild Flower dress on Pinterest and felt inspired by the handmade crochet gown.
But she couldn’t afford it – so she made her own version.
‘350 hours later and I was still trying to finish it so
that explains the price tag,’ she said.
She said she wanted to re-wear the dress to her other step-daughter’s wedding, but was thinking of dying
the dress lime green and creating ‘cobwebs’ between the flowers.
‘Do you think this will be okay?’ she asked, adding only family would have seen the original dress.

ANGELA HARTNETT’S BEEF & VEAL MEATBALLS
Meatballs are super-quick to make for a weeknight supper and there are many
ways to serve them (see tip). The veal in these
gives a lightness to the result, but you can swap it out for all beef, or flavourful pork
mince. This is a good way to use up any day-old bread hanging around.
The recipe is easy to double up on and freeze so you have
a meal for an emergency.
SERVES 4
4 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for the onion
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped
400g tin chopped tomatoes
200g white bread (day old, if possible)
whole milk (enough to soak the bread)
500g beef mince
250g English veal mince
2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, plus extra to serve
4 anchovies, finely chopped
2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley
salt and freshly ground black pepper
350g dried spaghetti, to serve (optional; see tip)
1 First make a tomato sauce. In a saucepan, heat a dash
of olive oil over a medium heat, then add half the
chopped onion and half the garlic, then sauté for 10 minutes
to soften. Add the tomatoes and when the liquid starts to
bubble, reduce to a simmer and leave to cook, stirring occasionally (about 20 minutes, to create a thick sauce), while you make the meatballs.
2 In a bowl, soak the bread in the milk until soft.
In another bowl, mix the beef, veal, parmesan, anchovies, half the
parsley and the rest of the onions and garlic. Then add the soaked bread, lightly squeezing any excess milk from it first.
Mix well and season with salt and pepper. Mould the mixture into 12-14 meatballs.
3 Put the 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying
pan over a medium heat. When hot, add the meatballs,
turning (for about 5 minutes) to ensure they colour all over.
If necessary, cook in batches so they are not all squashed together, setting each batch aside on a plate while you
cook the remainder.
4 To finish, remove the meatballs from the pan and set aside.
Pour the tomato sauce into the frying pan over a medium heat.
Put the meatballs back into the pan for a further 4-5
minutes to cook through. Sprinkle with the remaining
parsley before serving.
TIP You can serve the meatballs as they come, or on top of spaghetti.
If you would prefer the latter, cook the pasta according to the packet instructions until al dente.
Drain it in a colander, reserving a cupful of the
cooking water to loosen the meatball sauce if necessary, and then transfer it back to the pan and toss it with a little olive oil and butter.
Put the spaghetti on a serving plate and top with the meatballs
and sauce. Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle
of parmesan.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film – stars Joaquin Phoenix and
Lady Gaga and was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures – but
was slammed by critics and failed to ignite at the box office.
The sequel has been roundly criticized for being
a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar
with Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with
DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent
from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck,
mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does
not include a DC Studios logo.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and
a critic score of 32%

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca,
Chairperson of Warner Bros. Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and
Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months
before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind
of a Warner Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after
WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and
was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the
director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.
However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the
budget remaining static.
The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical

It has only made $114million worldwide against its $200million budget.
The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized
as ‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday, October 4, but
it only raked in $20 million at the domestic box office, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel,
which had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the
2019 film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley
Quinn).
However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the
lowest score for a comic book movie.
Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible
reviews — holds a higher score with a C+.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31%
and a critic score of 32%.
The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at the domestic box office during the entirety
of opening weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around
$70 million – but the number has since drastically
dropped.
Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters – and
eventually landed a little over $1 billion in the global box office.
The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips – had a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget increased for Folie À Deux to around $200 million.
The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both critics and
audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the 76th
Venice International Film Festival.
Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker
(Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original
Score.
The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film
Festival last month in September, where it earned a 12-minute
standing ovation, per Deadline.

expectations, others have dubbed the movie ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant.’
Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but said it lacked
any thrill.
The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is best remembered
as one of the most subversive and original films of the last decade, while its
hugely anticipated sequel is just as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.
Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just
two stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a
sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.
Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to have no idea what to do
with her.
Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

Joker: Folie à Deux has faced additional backlash from fans as
they have claimed that Gaga is running the risk of losing her acting career.

Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are
better representing the views of everyday Australians, unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United States.
The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast
host Joe Rogan complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’.
‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening
in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of
independents,’ Crowe countered.
‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to
bring a non-party-line series of points to the argument.
‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s
making both of the main parties re-examine who they are and what they stand for.
Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US
politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.
There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties, but these receive
vanishingly few votes in comparison.
Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform
well on occasion.

and take five southern states, while another disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states on a similarly racist platform but with only a million votes.
The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to
get on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent candidate before he pulled out and backed Republican Donald Trump.
He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet.
Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.
The former New York property developer had even considered running
for president in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement – formed
by former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19
per cent of the popular vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes.
Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912
ran as the Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying six states including California and coming second ahead of Republican William Taft.
Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians who have
taken votes away from the two traditional parties of Labor and
the Liberal-National coalition
This situation is helped by a strong Green party who
now have 12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives.

traditional ‘blue’ approach of the centre-right Liberal Party.
Zali Steggall became the first Teal independent
to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.
In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat from former
treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election.
She was one of seven Teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 15,
with this tally including the four Greens, three conservative independents and progressive Andrew Wilkie.
Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired in August, has recently resurfaced
in Teal social media adverts.
They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court, who founded Climate
200, which has given campaign funding to some Teal candidates.
Not all independents elected in 2022 were Teals, however.

desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.
The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 16
in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals in protest at its opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.
The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house – the highest proportion of non major
party MPs since Federation in 1901.

The 64-year-old Bravo beauty decided to buy the Sin City abode after taking an in-person tour of the premises,

Australian politicians are almost always opting to fly with Qantas on taxpayer-funded trips,
despite Virgin offering cheaper tickets.
Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per cent of
work trips last year despite it not always being the
cheapest route, according to travel data provided to the government.
While politicians and their staffers are required to book the cheapest flight,
it also has to be the most efficient, with Qantas offering the most routes between major
cities.
MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips
like ordinary Aussies can, but they can can receive lifetime status credits,
which allows access to airport lounges and flight upgrades.
‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance
of Qantas in securing bookings by parliamentarians and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote in an opinion piece for the Australian Financial Review.
‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s dime.’
Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight bookings by government officials which will be conducted by the
Department of Finance this year, despite there being just
two months left of 2024.
Politicians’ preference for Qantas may also be put down to the airline’s exclusive
invite-only ‘Chairman’s Lounge’.

almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership

The high profile ranks of government giftees include Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as well as every member
of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant ministers.
While most politicians declared their Qantas’ privileges as
a ‘gift’, Labor MP Marion Scrymgour listed her membership as her ‘Chairman Lounge entitlement’.

And it’s not just politicians on the take, with

Often touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’,
membership to the Chairman’s Lounge has long been veiled

Even the entrances to each of the country’s six opulent VIP clubs – in Sydney, Melbourne,
Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth airports – are suitably discreet.
Though, once inside, the designer lounges are immediately more ostentatious, with free
à la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent selection of wines and Champagne and a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.
Membership to the club is ‘priceless’ – it cannot be bought for any amount of money nor
obtained via any amount of frequent flyers points.
Instead, each member is hand-picked and approved by the company’s chief executive and chairman.

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair Isle
knit. Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out from
the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper (especially the

When it comes to capturing my heart with a cuddly
creature, it’s the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, 75, who’s reinvented himself as the internet’s favourite granddad with his wholesome life with
a menagerie of animals, who has won me over.
The jewel in the crown of his ever-growing brood of beasts is Schnelly the pig, who
joined the family in April last year, making the star the latest in a long list of celebrities to realise
the joys of a porky pal – along with Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and the Beckhams.
I’m completely smitten with the cuteness of pet
pigs. I lose hours scrolling through Instagram, looking at
pictures of furry little piglets with pretty pink snouts.
There are 255,000 Insta posts with the hashtag #petpig and I’ve probably looked
at all of them. Then there’s the 286,000 posts hashtagged #micropig and I’d hazard
a guess that I’ve seen all of those too.
So I’m rather excited to discover that there’s a pig farm
less than an hour from central London, where I can find
out what it’s really like to have a porcine pet.
While celebrities might get away with turning up to photoshoots,
TV appearances and fancy restaurants with all manner of
furry creatures, will I get the same reception if I take a pig for a stroll
down the high street?

I’m hoping the Kew Little Pigs Farm will help me find out.
It specialises in miniature pigs, which pig lovers can buy or ‘adopt’ to visit on the farm.
Then there are the day trips. The Piggy Pet & Play package lets
visitors ‘pet, brush, groom, watch and play with the pigs.’ The Pig Enthusiast package can include
putting sun cream on the pigs, and the Comprehensive
Guide to Pig Keeping teaches you everything you need to know before buying your own micro pig.
Clearly I must go there!
And so I head to Amersham, in Buckinghamshire, where Kew Little Pigs Farm
is based.
When I arrive, owner Olivia Mikhail looks slightly concerned
at the sight of my Converse trainers and cropped jeans, a combination that will surely result in splattered shins.
However, Olivia has no idea just how prepared I actually am, because I have packed not only knee
high wellies for my time on the farm, but also my designer heels,
for my glimpse into what life’s like as a
pig-owning celebrity.

Paris Hilton started the chihuahuas in handbags craze,
and is also the proud owner of Princess Piglette
George Clooney, Paris Hilton, Miley Cyrus, Jonathan Ross, Charlotte
Church and even the Beckhams have all kept pigs as pets over the past decade
or so, while more recently Ariane Grande and Pete
Davidson adopted Piggy Smallz during their short-lived romance.
Comedian John Bishop gave rescue pig Milo a home for more than a decade and was devastated when the pet passed
away, saying he was the ‘heartbeat’ of the family.
They’re as much a celeb accessory as oversized sunglasses
– which is why I’ve brought those with me too.
But first things first. Before I spend an afternoon taking a petite pig for a stroll, I sit down with Olivia in the Kew Little Pigs cafe,
to complete the theory side of the Comprehensive Guide to Pig Keeping.
It turns out there is quite a lot of admin involved in owning a pig, alongside
a rule book thicker than Harry Potter.
Who knew that you needed a license to walk a pig?
Who would imagine that you can’t feed pigs your kitchen leftovers?
It used to be common practice, but has been banned because of the risk of
diseases such as African swine flu and foot and mouth disease that can be spread by
consuming contaminated pork products.
Who can fathom having to fill out a form to drive your pig from one place to another – again for disease control reasons?
After all the admin and mucking out, Samantha was delighted to move
on to the fun part – cuddles with Astrid
Samantha found that mucking out the pig pen was actually a lot more civilised than picking up poo on a dog walk
Samantha came armed with wellies for her day at the farm, but made sure to keep it glamorous
After swapping her flimsy trainers for wellies, Samantha felt equipped to
tackle her day on the farm
And who would guess that pigs have to have their own house?
I mean, it’s only got to be about the size of shed, but it’s actually a law to
uphold welfare standards.
I suppose none of this is an issue for celebrities who
have people to do paperwork for them – not to mention acres of space – but
to me it seems insurmountable.
Olivia senses that my dreams are crushed and attempts to reassure
me: ‘It’s really not that much paperwork. Look, filling in this form would
take two minutes.’
Moving on from the theory, we head outside for the practical part of the
course. Here, in large pens, are lots of little pigs which are super
cute, so this makes me happy.
I am given a rake to claw the pig poo into a dustpan.
Both the rake and the dustpan have long handles and I like the distance this creates.
It is certainly more civilised than picking up poo in a flimsy plastic bag on a dog walk.
Clearing away pig excrement with proper equipment which allows you to maintain a civilised, and
sanitary, distance makes me wonder if – despite the paperwork – pigs might just trump dogs.

to glam up to take her pet pig down to the town centre for lunch
Taking a pig out for a walk is trickier than it looks, and a lot of treats
are required to keep things on track
Next, Olivia asks if I would like to feed the pigs. Yes of course!
She hands me some hay that’s stuffed inside what’s basically a large fishnet stocking,
the size of Santa’s sack. The hay sticks out of all the holes, and it’s my job
to hang up the sack in the pig pen, so the pigs can eat from it.
This sounds easy. Only it’s not. ‘NOT THERE!
NO! IT’S GOT TO BE HIGHER! TIE IT ROUND THE POST! NO! NOT LIKE THAT!
NO!’
I feel like a failing contestant on The Crystal Maze, only
this is worse because I’m now surrounded by hungry pigs and I cannot see a panic button.
I swear there was something on Netflix where murdered bodies were dumped in a pig pen, to be eaten by the pigs.
Or maybe the bodies were eaten alive. This definitely happens
all the time, according to TV, and now I don’t even know which is worse, the prospect of being felled by pigs eating
through my ankles, or the pressure to hang the
hay correctly.
It is like my challenge on The Crystal Maze has been especially devised to amuse the
inhabitants of hell.
I find myself grateful to make it out of the pig pen alive.
Surely I get to do celebrity stuff now?
Celebrities’ pigs are as stylish as their owners, so I’ve sourced
designer outfits for my trottered chums. I’d initially looked at diamond
chokers by Dior, because what pig wouldn’t want a diamond collar?
But apparently pigs are happier in harnesses, which fit around the body, not just the neck.
I hunt for a harness that an A-lister might pick for their pig, and I am delighted to discover a pink leopard print harness with a matching lead.
It is by Urban Pup, a pet fashion brand whose website I’ve now spent more time on than all the other websites in my search history.
There’s the zebra print, the cheetah print, the pink argyle; the florals, the tartans, and the hearts.
There’s the range inspired by Legally Blonde and the pet carrier that resembles a pink Chanel handbag.
Then there are the socks…
I turn up at the farm with more outfits for the
pigs than I have for myself. I guess this is
what it’s like being a pig parent: #SELFLESS
I am introduced to Astrid, a 16 month old micro piglet who’ll fulfill
my dreams of walking a pig. I show Olivia all the outfits I’ve brought from Urban Pup and she picks
out a pink tartan harness with a matching lead.
I want to dress up all the pigs but Olivia says no. That’s
OK. There is probably some law about only one
pig at a time looking this stunning.
When Astrid and I are dressed, we head into Old Amersham.
It’s a pretty market town in the Chilterns with cobbled streets and quaint white
buildings with beams.
So how will locals feel about a pig on a lead?
I imagine I may be sternly spoken to by a member of the Women’s Institute.
However, it turns out that Old Amersham is perfectly au fait
with celebrity antics, given that Poirot, Midsomer Murders and Four
Weddings and a Funeral have all been filmed there.
On my pig keeping course I have learnt that pigs never poo where they eat, sleep or
socialise, because they’re very clean, so from day one, without any training,
a pig will go outside to poo.
I am surprised then, as I arrive in Old Amersham, to find
that Astrid has done her business in her carry box. I try not to think about this, as I hold her lead.
Our first stop is the Amersham Museum. I’m
not a massive fan of walking around looking at things, but
I hear the museum homes a Tudor dining table that visitors are welcome to sit at.
It is about lunchtime, so I’m hopeful I’ll be served a Tudor banquet.
I quite fancy a tankard of wine and a bit of wild boar.
Unfortunately, Astrid does not, and so, despite being welcomed by museum director Briony,
we leave pretty much as soon as we arrive.
We go for a stroll instead, but I have to scatter pig food pellets to coax
Astrid along the pavement. I guess celebrities get their assistants
to walk ahead, trailing treats to entice the pet pigs in the right direction.

However, doing it without an assistant, I find myself thinking that it’s definitely
easier to walk a dog.
Celebrity life is about lounging in luxurious surroundings, so Astrid and I head
to The Griffin, a private members club, bistro and bakery, that’s
pretty much the Soho House of Amersham.
In the beamed building that dates back to the 17th century,
there are gorgeous leather sofas and cosy cushions.
However, I have learnt on my pig keeping course that pigs are happiest alfresco, so Astrid and
I take a seat on the astro-turf terrace, beneath a pretty parasol
that wouldn’t be out of place in a Cotswolds shoot for Tatler.
It is here, as we relax like A-listers, that Astrid and I are at
our happiest. As I sip a coffee and eye-up a chocolate brownie (I’m being a celebrity,
remember, I don’t actually eat these things), Astrid puts her trotters up on the
seat beside me and enjoys a few pig food pellets.
Clearly this is our natural environment, so it’s probably just a
matter of time before Astrid is snapped up by a celebrity to live life first class.
But for now, Astrid must mooch back to the mud, and I
must head home to wash pig poo off my wellies.
I am chuffed to bits to have spent an afternoon with Astrid, but
as I think it all over, on the train back to Marylebone, I know that I’ll never
keep a pig as a pet.
Aside from all the legal red tape, my lack of space in London,
and the trickiness of trying to take a pig for a walk,
there’s always the fear that the micro pig might turn out to be not so tiny after all.
I’ve seen headlines about 4 ounce « teacup » pigs growing bigger than a bear, and frankly
I find it terrifying. So I’ll leave the pet pigs to the celebrities.

The Warner Bros. film has made $192.2 million worldwide, with $56.6 million in domestic box office revenue, according to Box Office Mojo.

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and reproductive rights
As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire, each major
candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme — abortion rights for
Democrat Kamala Harris and border security for Republican Donald Trump.
In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot
peak, with both topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums.
And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020
by a tiny margin of about 10,500 votes — every ballot truly will
count.
In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were going
door-to-door to try to persuade voters to back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution —
and, while they’re at it, to vote for Vice President Harris.
To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist,
the abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to « a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created. »
She added, « Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people. »

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights, Ireland,

But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.

conceded, « but that’s very small. »
He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that
have entered the country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.
« People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from, » he

« My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way. »
So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal
to let local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the country
illegally — powers normally reserved to the border police who work for the federal

« I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything, » Lopez said.
– Mixed impact –
The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering an opportunity to
mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions at the very heart of the two presidential campaigns.

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that
activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona,
with the Republican holding a very narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both appear likely to pass.
So the abortion issue may not be « helping Democrats in the way that they would hope, » said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said.
Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs. Republican issue, the Republican Party
includes « a broad spectrum of views on the topic, » an issue that also raises
conservatives’ concerns about « government interference, » she added.
The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not
just among Trump Republicans but also « moderates and even many Democrats, »
said John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state senator.
The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of
the border Biden ordered in recent months.

Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the views of everyday Australians,
unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United States.
The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe
Rogan complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’.
‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of
independents,’ Crowe countered.
‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to
bring a non-party-line series of points to the argument.
‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making both of the main parties re-examine who they are and what they stand for.
Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how
US politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.
There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties,
but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.
Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968 US election which
saw him garner 10 million votes and take five southern states,
while another disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states on a similarly racist platform but with only a
million votes.
The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to
get on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent candidate before he
pulled out and backed Republican Donald Trump.
He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet.
Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.
The former New York property developer had even considered running for president
in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement – formed by former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular
vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes.
Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying six states including California
and coming second ahead of Republican William Taft.
Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent
politicians who have taken votes away from the two
traditional parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition
This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now
have 12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives.
Zali Steggall (pictured) became the first ‘teal’ independent to achieve huge success
when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his
seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election
Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms but are fiscally conservative
have been labelled ‘teal’ candidates.
This is because they have combined their ‘green’ views
on climate with the traditional ‘blue’ approach of the centre-right Liberal
Party on economics.
Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge success when she
ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat
in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.
In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal
seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election.
She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 16, with this tally including the four Greens,
three conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.
Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first
aired in August, has recently resurfaced in teal social
media adverts.
They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court, who founded Climate 200, which has
given campaign funding to some teal candidates.
Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were teals, however.

The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 17 in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals in protest at its opposition to the
Indigenous Voice to Parliament.
The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house – the highest proportion of non major party MPs
