L’USB-C est en train de devenir la norme partout dans le monde, mais cela ne signifie pas que la connectique n’évolue pas.
En 2019, l’USB4 faisait son arrivée. Avec lui, une vitesse de connexion et de partage des données encore jamais vue. Mais depuis 3 ans les choses ont beaucoup évolué dans le monde de la tech, et la prochaine mise à jour de l’USB vient de pointer le bout de son nez. Elle vient d’être annoncée par USB Promoter, l’organisme en charge du développement des nouvelles technologies liées à cette connectique.
Comme l’explique Brad Saunder, président de l’USB Promoter Group, les solutions qui ont tiré le plus grand profit de cette mise à jour sont les écrans hautes performances ainsi que les réseaux de stockage. « Comme le veut la tradition, la mise à jour à venir double les capacités de l’USB4 ».
À noter cependant que les anciens câbles, dépendant de l’USB 3, ou du Thunderbolt 3, seront également impactés, dans une moindre mesure, par cette mise à jour. En ce qui concerne l’USB 3.2, la mise à jour devrait permettre d’augmenter la bande passante et ainsi dépasser les 20 Gb/s.
Nous devrions en savoir beaucoup plus sur cette mise à jour lors des USB DevDays 2022 qui se tiennent durant le mois de novembre. Au cours de ces derniers, les développeurs du monde entier viennent questionner les ingénieurs d’USB Promoter pour maximiser l’utilisation de ces câbles avec la nouvelle mise à jour.
Pour rappel, l’USB Promoter Group fait partie de l’USB-IF, une société à but non lucratif qui cherche à promouvoir la solution USB comme un port de connectique universel. Fondée en 1995, la firme était à l’initiative des grandes entreprises de l’époque. Parmi les sociétés fondatrices, on retrouve des noms comme Intel ou IBM, tandis que des sociétés comme Apple ou Microsoft ont depuis rejoint l’aventure.
L’USB-C : le port universel tant attendu ?
La grande force de cette mise à jour c’est qu’elle ne demandera aucune modification de câbles aux utilisateurs. Ces derniers ne verront pas la différence physiquement, le câble étant toujours le même. Avec cette mise à jour, l’USB Promoter réitère sa confiance en l’USB-C, ce port de connectique étant amené à devenir une référence mondiale.
Aujourd’hui seule Apple semble vouloir lui résister encore un peu, mais la firme de Cupertino va bientôt devoir céder. La Commission européenne vient en effet de prendre une décision historique, imposant aux constructeurs de smartphones de proposer un port de connectique USB-C sur tous les smartphones sortis après le 1er janvier 2024.
Apple devra donc abandonner son port Lightning, et proposer un iPhone avec de l’USB-C, ou sans aucun port apparent.
