Le chef de l’État s’exprimait lors de la cérémonie de pose de la première de la construction de ce mémorial.
“Comme un miroir incassable, il sera le reflet et le témoin vivant de la mémoire collective de la nation, de l’Afrique et de ses diasporas. Plus qu’une structure physique, il sera un livre d’histoire ouvert au monde pour témoigner du passé”, a-t-il poursuivi.
Ce Mémorial dont le projet remonte à plus de 30 ans, se dressera sur la Corniche ouest de Dakar sur 35.000 m2, avec sa Tour en acier de 108 mètres de haut.
ll comprendra, entre autres commodités : une zone commerciale dédiée à l’artisanat local ; un espace d’exposition ; une salle de réception et une autre polyvalente, réservée au cinéma, et à des conférences et spectacles ; des ateliers mémoriels; un Centre d’études sur la traite des êtres humains et une librairie.
Mais l’ouvrage servira surtout à préserver la mémoire sur l’un des épisodes les plus douloureux de l’Afrique.
“Il dira qu’à quelques encablures d’ici, l’innommable s’est produit ; des hommes, des femmes et des enfants de tous âges ont été rassemblés, enchaînés, torturés, transportés par millions et réduits sans pitié à l’esclavage, génération après génération, a déclaré Macky Sall.
Il racontera l’histoire héroïque d’hommes et de femmes qui, par milliers, ont résisté au prix de leur vie, préférant la mort à l’asservissement.
Il fera le récit horrible de corps entassés au fond des cales, puis jetés dans les profondeurs lugubres de l’Atlantique. Il dira enfin : Plus jamais ça !”
