To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the
abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to « a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created. »

So the abortion issue may not be « helping Democrats in the way that they would hope, » said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State
University.

Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump back to the White
House, Brian said.

Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs. Republican issue,

Lady Gaga is set to release her seventh studio album in February.

Despite lead single Disease stalling on the Hot
100 at No. 27, the 38-year-old is forging
ahead with her next album, which she described as both ‘fun’ and ‘darker.’

Speaking to Vogue magazine about the project, Gaga said that she’s been focused
on the production side of her new songs. 

‘I love producing — I always have — and something that was really important to
me making my seventh studio album was blending live instrumentation with
programming,’ she explained.

‘The album is chaotic from a genre perspective — it
is genre-bending, and I think in that way is a deeply personal look into my mind as a producer and the way I think about music.’

She also said that the album has a ‘darker pop’ sound that’s more in line with her iconic
2009 album, The Fame Monster. 

However, fans need not be worried that Gaga is going
too somber with her sound. 

‘The album is not extremely serious in that it’s very
fun and meant to be enjoyed at a party, in a club, or at home having personal fun time — to be free of your worries at home or walking through life,’ she insisted. 

Lady Gaga is focused on releasing her seventh studio album
this February following the disappointing reception to lead single Disease

Gaga released the album’s lead single Disease last month to rave
reviews from music critics, who lauded it as a return to the star’s roots.

Unfortunately, the acclaim failed to translate to
the charts, with Disease debuting at No. 27 on the
Hot 100 – her worst entry for a lead single in 16 years.

On the bright side, Gaga is currently enjoying one of her biggest hits in years thanks to her Bruno
Mars duet, Die With a Smile. 

The ballad has so far reached No. 2 on the Hot 100 and No.
1 on the Pop Airplay Chart.

It comes after Gaga’s leading role in the disastrous Joker: Folie à Deux.

The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency
of who makes political donations in the first place.

So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes – and the
extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.

The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made.

At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made
– but you only find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later, well after elections
are won and lost.

In other words, what is broadly being proposed will
result in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.

Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under the
current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.

Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the
proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’
and ‘a rort, not a reform’. 

They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.

I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.

Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping
out the influence of the wealthy must have
been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the
major parties closer to accountability.

More fool me.

The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is
being put forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.

It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the
Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.

The major parties have long complained about the influence the
likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the
Teals. 

And we know the Greens have taken massive donations
from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.

Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a
mile from reforms that will curtail dark art
of political donations.

The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take
effect immediately, by the way. It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the
next election designed to catch the crossbench out.

They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough
time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for
them.

Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to
go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.

As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which
would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.

But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling
a deal to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their
support, not cynical opposition, to what is being
advocated for.

They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could
be incorporated in the package.

To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being
in politics to ‘clean things up’.

that are best handled privately, or loudly offering insights or slights about her husband’s political

She is an asset, a partner, an equal who is neither trying
to control – looking at you, Jill Biden – nor controlled
by her partner. She is what many feminists insist they are: independent, a product of her
own choices, comfortable in her own skin.

She has been by Trump’s side the entire time. Though never in his shadow.
In fact, from that very first moment they descended the golden escalator,
she’s been leading the way.

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed on Friday
against the dollar, but is headed for its tenth straight weekly
loss amid concerns that new tariff threatened by President-elect Donald Trump will heighten strains on the struggling Chinese economy.

Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as
Trump’s policies are expected to drive up U.S. inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from falling
too much. « We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment, » Lynn Song, Greater China chief economist at ING, said in a note.

However, « we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies. » The yuan was changing hands at 7.2549 per dollar around midday, little moved from the previous close.
Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year low of 7.2996 hit on Tuesday, it is poised to register its longest
weekly losing streak since 2018.
The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and « the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building » in the yuan, aided by ongoing attempts by China’s central
bank to restrain its decline, said Alvin Tan, strategist at RBC Capital Markets.
Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic recovery, with manufacturing activities
improving, but property sales in many Chinese cities remaining weak.

China’s « economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature, » said John Browning, managing director of
BANDS Financial. He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to
be announced during next week’s Central Economic Work Conference, as « Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins. » Top policymakers will gather at the conference to agree on major economic goals for next year.

But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched
indicators globally for clues of Beijing’s near-term policy intentions, likely will not be
officially announced until an annual parliament meeting in March.
During Trump’s first term as president, the yuan weakened about 5%
against the dollar after the initial round of U.S.
tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5% a year later when trade tensions escalated.
Growth worries and expectations of further monetary
easing by Beijing pushed China’s 10-year treasury yields
below 2% to record lows this week, worsening the yield disadvantage against the
U.S., and exerting downward pressure on the yuan. ING’s Song expects the onshore yuan to move within a

A billionaire couple have won the right to remove a single tree from the
driveway of their lavish $20million mansion after being blocked by their
local council. 

Paul Holmes a Court, the son of Australia’s first billionaire Robert Holmes a Court, and his wife
Zara had been at loggerheads with their local council over a request to remove a single peppermint tree growing
in the middle of their driveway.

The couple bought the four-bedroom mansion in the affluent, tree-lined suburb overlooking Perth’s
Freshwater Bay for $20.1million in August.

They wanted to remove the tree but the Shire of Peppermint Grove refused
the request on the grounds the tree was not dead or deceased. 

‘We are very lucky to live here, but I have to say that the tree placement is unusual,’ Ms Holmes a Court previously told a council
meeting. 

‘I’m quite a reasonable and rational person, but a tree in the
middle of the driveway makes it quite tricky to reverse out.’

The couple enjoyed a breakthrough at a council meeting last week after
an alternative motion was unanimously passed that allowed the tree to be removed on the condition they
paid a $2,500 bond before any work was done on the driveway.

They will also need to plant two replacement trees on their
property.

Ms Holmes a Court previously claimed the tree’s odd placement also made it difficult to spot cars turning the corner at a nearby intersection with Bay View Terrace.

After the motion to remove the tree was passed at the
meeting, councillor Douglas Jackson said it was a
‘good outcome’.

‘I think it meets both the owners’ wants, or expectation,
but also matches the council’s needs at the same time by ensuring that there is tree cover on the verge of that
property,’ he said.

Peppermint Grove is hoping to implement a policy that would even make it an offence to damage or remove any mature trees on private property without council approval.

Last month, WA Planning Minister John Carey said he hoped the
Shire of Peppermint Grove would ‘take a common sense approach’ to
the issue.

‘This is part of the challenge that we do have with
local government. I’ve always been on the record
that we need local governments to take a common sense approach to issues,’ Mr Carey told the West Australian. 

‘And I understand people are passionate about trees. But ultimately, we do need local governments to
assess the situation and find pragmatic outcomes.’

According to the online listing for the four-bedroom, four-bathroom mansion – which is built on a corner block along the banks of the Swan River – the
sprawling Federation-style property was built in around 1904.

Hiroyuki Sanada and Billy Bob Thornton win respective nods for Shōgun and Landman.

British Netflix drama Baby Reindeer has also been acknowledged,
with the Richard Gadd written show featuring in the category for Best
Limited Series, Anthology Series or Television Motion Picture
and its lead actress Jessica Gunning named as Best Supporting Female Actor – Television.

The show will compete alongside the hugely popular Ripley, controversial biopic Monsters: The
Lyle And Erik Menendez Story, True Detective: Night Country, Ripley and
The Penguin.

During the upcoming awards ceremony, Cheers legend Ted Danson will receive the Carol Burnett Award
for those who have « made outstanding contributions to television on or off screen » and Viola Davis
will be handed the Cecil B. DeMille Award for achievement in film.
