Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the
views of everyday Australians, unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United States. 

The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan  complaining that Americans were ‘completely
trapped in the two-party system’.

‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting
thing that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise
of independents,’ Crowe countered.

‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to bring a non-party-line series of points to the argument.

‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us.
In that it’s making both of the main parties re-examine who
they are and what they stand for.

Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US politics is
completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.

There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.

Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform
well on occasion.

Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968 US election which
saw him garner 10 million votes and take five southern states, while
another disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states on a similarly racist platform but with only a million votes.

The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent candidate before he pulled out
and backed Republican Donald Trump. 

He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet. 

Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.

The former New York property developer had even considered running for president
in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement –
formed by former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes. 

Australia, by contrast, has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians who
have taken votes away from the two traditional parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition

This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now have 12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives. 

Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms but are fiscally conservative have been labelled
‘teal’ candidates.

This is because they have combined their ‘green’
views on climate with the traditional ‘blue’ fiscal approach of the centre-right Liberal party.

Zali Steggall became the first Teal independent to achieve huge success when she ousted
former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.

They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court, who founded Climate
200, which has given campaign funding to some Teal candidates.

Not all independents are Teals, however. 

There is Dai Lee defeated the former Labor frontbencher and former NSW premier Kristina Keneally in the Sydney seat
of Fowler.

And, of course, maverick Bob Katter who has just
celebrated 50 years in parliament, spending 20 years as
a Queensland state MP before serving the past three decades in federal parliament as the
MP for the regional far north Queensland electorate of
Kennedy. 

Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a bid to teach school
kids how to fire rifles and a desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the
heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?

In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties
look set to come together to support.

The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent
the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less
than the major parties currently spend.

The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing
the transparency of who makes political donations in the
first place.

So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while
using their cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.

The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations
need to be made.

At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you only find out the details of
who has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.

In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result
in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected into
campaigning by the wealthy.

Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and warned the reform
would ‘not stop the rot’ 

Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a
warning shot – saying if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s a rort,
not reform’. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock
(right) said: ‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political
party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.

Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’,
‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’. 

They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the
opposition.

I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before
even starting to write this column.

Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens
or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench
effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.

More fool me.

The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor and
is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.

It makes you wonder what they have to hide.
Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.

Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political
donors such as Clive Palmer

Another potential target of the laws is businessman and
Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court

The Greens have taken massive donations in the
past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)

The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à
Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals. 

And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the
wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.

Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of
virtue are running a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art
of political donations.

The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately,
by the way. It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.

They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.

Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.

As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would
create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking
advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years
to come.

But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get
these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.

They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.

To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

a new report has claimed.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film – stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga and was considered
a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures – but was slammed by critics
and failed to ignite at the box office.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with Phillips’
process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing
to do with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and
Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere
afterparty last month.

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally
ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was
Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a critic
score of 32%

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that
Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros. Entertainment,
and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his huge past
successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca
and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months
before production began on Joker 2 in December
2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips  shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022
and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would
have cost around 20 per cent less.

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the
budget remaining static. 

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical
and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar
with Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to
do with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC
bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA
premiere afterparty last month

 A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported
the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to Todd.

And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what
the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want
to premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back
– with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the film
to Venice.

Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book
movie history as the film bombed at the box office on opening night. 

It has only made $114million worldwide against
its $200million budget. 

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially
released in theaters on Friday, October 4, but it only raked
in $20 million at the domestic box office, per The Hollywood Reporter. 

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had
earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the role
of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn). 

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore
— the lowest score for a comic book movie. 

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this
year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score
with a C+.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score
of 31% and a critic score of 32%. 

The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at
the domestic box office during the entirety of opening weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter. 

Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but the number
has since drastically dropped. 

Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters – and eventually landed a little over $1 billion in the global box office. 

The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips – had a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget increased for Folie À Deux to around $200
million. 

The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both critics
and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the
76th Venice International Film Festival. 

Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal
of the Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy
Award for Best Original Score. 

The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival
last month in September, where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.

Most critics have said Todd failed to use Gaga correctly in the movie and claimed she was only
bought in for the musical aspect of it.

While the majority of critics say Joker: Folie À
Deux didn’t live up to expectations, others have dubbed the movie ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant.’ 

Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but said it
lacked any thrill. 

The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is best remembered as one of
the most subversive and original films of the last decade, while
its hugely anticipated sequel is just as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.

Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two stars but credited
Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.

Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to have no idea
what to do with her. 

Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

But what about having sex in a desert, or even a storage
unit? These are just two of the unusual sexual fantasies social
media users have confessed to trying.

A hilarious Reddit thread, named ‘what is a sexual fantasy
you do not recommend’, features the bizarre sexcapades
of commenters — many of who bitterly regret their risqué acts.

The thread began with a question from user u/Fantastic-Ant-4429, who asked: ‘What is a sexual fantasy you do not recommend fulfilling?’

Having sex in the desert, a library and on a plane were some
of the most upvoted responses, Huffpost reported. 

Reddit user u/ElPresidente714 admitted to trying to have sex in the
desert at night when coming back from Vegas. But in reality, they were met with ‘creepy crawly desert things
don’t sleep at night’.

Another, u/DonSmitty said a ‘buddy in high school’ covered his
girlfriend (including her genitals) in chocolate syrup.

But it didn’t end well — she got infected with a ‘crazy’ yeast infection. 

Doing it in a storage unit was another unusual fantasy which ended
badly. User u/isthisfark wrote: ‘There’s a closing time
and if you miss it you’ll get stuck behind the gates for the night.
Then the people who live there start rustling.’

Not everyone pursues or even plans to act on their sexual fantasies in real life.

But a handful of those who have tried to make their browser history
a reality have confessed they didn’t quite go to plan —
a thread on Reddit revealed

The thread began with a question from user u/Fantastic-Ant-4429

Nationally 55 per cent of Brits reported having sex at least
one a week, this rising to 59 per cent of men and falling to 51 per cent of women

One commenter u/hot-snake-70 confessed they found
out the hard way that it ‘stings’ if you put your penis ‘in a glass of red wine’.

Threesomes were also suggested to be a bad idea with
user u/Touristupdatenola adding: ‘If I wanted to disappoint two
people simultaneously, I’d have dinner with both
my parents.’

Another user u/odysseus-23, warned against trying to
have sex in a library due to the likelihood of getting ‘caught on the
cameras’.

And while joining the Mile High Club — engaging in sex acts while aboard an airplane — might
sound exciting, some warn that it is anything but.

Adam Bandt said people ‘can make their own judgment’ about him enjoying an exclusive
and discretionary perk from Qantas during a tense
exchange with a journalist live on radio.

The Greens leader has been outed as a member of
the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge, an invitation-only set of catered waiting areas and services handed out
by the airline in what has been called ‘Australia’s most exclusive
club’.

Mr Bandt was challenged on Monday by ABC Radio National stand-in host Steve
Cannane that he was ‘enjoying free hospitality from a company that has illegally sacked hundreds of workers’.

Mr Bandt replied: ‘And I’ll declare that and people can make their own judgement about
what they think about that.’

Cannane was referring to the Federal Court’s ruling that Qantas illegally sacked 1,700 workers
at the start of the Covid pandemic in a case brought by Transport Workers Union. 

Commenting on the sacking in June of 2020, Mr Bandt called it a ‘devastating day for thousands of Qantas workers
& their families’ in a Facebook post. ‘We’re thinking of you,’
he wrote.

Cannane challenged Mr Bandt further saying: ‘You don’t
think you should be a little purer on this and just not take their (Qantas’s) hospitality?’

Mr Bandt said he always made declarations about matters such as this and argued that the party’s policies to tax
big corporations heavily show the perks were not impacting the Greens.

for business class and has even taken private jets to election events

Mr Bandt used two private jets during the 2022 federal election campaign, landing
tax payers with the $23,000 bill. 

One flight was between Queensland regional centres Townsville and Rockhampton on March 7 but he also
boarded a $15,000 private plane along the well-travelled Brisbane to Canberra route to attend his party’s election campaign launch.

Mr Bandt isn’t the only politician in the hot seat with
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese being asked if he has included both his son and partner as
‘plus one’ Chairman’s Club members.

He is also being asked about free flight upgrades including an international
one he is alleged to have received from Qantas in new book The Chairman’s Lounge
authored by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.

The Greens are licking their electoral wounds after the Queensland state poll, where they are battling to hold onto their two seats
after stating they aimed to triple their representation in parliament.

With 72 per cent of the vote counted they appear to have retained
the Brisbane seat of Maiwar but suffered a 4.6 per cent swing to the ALP.

However, they remain behind South Brisbane, which has seen a massive 12.4
per cent swing to Labor with 64 per cent of votes counted.

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed on Friday against the dollar,
but is headed for its tenth straight weekly loss amid concerns
that new tariff threatened by President-elect Donald Trump will
heighten strains on the struggling Chinese economy.

Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s policies are expected to drive up U.S.
inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the
yuan from falling too much. « We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment, » Lynn
Song, Greater China chief economist at ING, said in a note.

However, « we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies. » The yuan was changing hands at 7.2549 per dollar around midday, little moved from the
previous close.
Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year low of 7.2996 hit on Tuesday, it
is poised to register its longest weekly losing streak since 2018.
The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and « the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building » in the yuan, aided
by ongoing attempts by China’s central bank to restrain its decline, said Alvin Tan, strategist
at RBC Capital Markets.

Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic recovery, with manufacturing activities improving, but
property sales in many Chinese cities remaining weak. China’s
« economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature, » said John Browning, managing director of
BANDS Financial.
He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during next week’s Central Economic Work Conference,
as « Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins. » Top policymakers will gather at the conference to agree on major economic goals for next
year.

But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched indicators
globally for clues of Beijing’s near-term policy intentions, likely will not be
officially announced until an annual parliament meeting in March.
During Trump’s first term as president, the yuan weakened about 5% against the dollar after the initial round of U.S.

tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5% a year later when trade
tensions escalated. Growth worries and expectations of further
monetary easing by Beijing pushed China’s 10-year treasury
yields below 2% to record lows this week, worsening the yield disadvantage against the U.S., and exerting downward pressure on the yuan. ING’s Song expects
the onshore yuan to move within a band between 7.00-7.40
