LA COMMEMORATION DU MAOULOUD, LA COMPILATION DU SAINT CORAN ET LE « SALATOUT TARAWIH » SONT-ILS DES INNOVATIONS ?
« Aujourd’hui j’ai parachevé pour vous votre religion, j’ai complété mon bienfait sur vous et j’ai agréé pour vous l’islam comme religion. » (Sourate 5, verset 3) De ce fait, il serait prétentieux et abusif de vouloir y ajouter ou soustraire quoi que ce soit. L’islam est une religion complète, il n’a pas besoin d’être améliorée. Toute pratique qui relève d’une adoration, n’y a pas sa place, si elle n’existait pas à l’époque de Mouhammad, paix et salut sur lui.
Evidemment, aucune adoration n’est laissée à la discrétion du serviteur. D’ailleurs, il est formellement interdit à tout musulman d’inventer à sa guise une quelconque manière de servir son Seigneur. Allah, exalté soit-Il, dit : « Ou bien auraient-ils des associés (à Allah) qui auraient établi pour eux des lois religieuses qu’Allah n’a jamais permises ? » (Sourate 42 – Verset 21)
Cependant, il faut comprendre que le sens du mot innovation ou « bida », en arabe, suivant la convention des sciences islamiques est différent de son sens dans la langue arabe, française ou autres. C’est un mot qui s’appréhende différemment suivant le domaine où il est utilisé :
Sur le plan linguistique, son sens est indépendant de la religion. C’est là où l’innovation constitue une faculté essentielle de l’épanouissement de l’être humain sur terre. Elle est tout changement ou évolution s’inscrivant dans le domaine du progrès de l’homme dans son environnement atmosphérique ou planétaire. Elle peut correspondre à une réalité et une priorité existentielles de l’être vivant sur cette terre. Elle est, en ce sens, vivement encouragée par l’islam. Il s’agit des innovations dans le port vestimentaire de l’homme, dans ses moyens de transport, dans l’évolution scientifique et technologique…
Mais sur le plan religieux, son sens est lié strictement aux pratiques cultuelles. Il s’agit de toute forme d’adoration inventée dans l’islam après le décès du Prophète, paix et salut sur lui. En ce sens, elle est formellement interdite par le Messager d’Allah qui dit : « Celui qui accomplit un acte sur lequel il n’y a pas notre ordre alors cet acte sera rejeté. » Il nous prévint en ces termes : « … prenez garde aux choses nouvelles (dans la religion), car toute nouveauté est une innovation et toute innovation est égarement et tout égarement mène à l’enfer. »
Ainsi la célébration du Maouloud, la compilation du Saint Coran et le « Salatout Tarawih » sont-ils des innovations ?
maouloudAvant de répondre à cette question, sachons qu’il est facile d’émettre des invectives ou insultes, de traiter les gens de menteurs ou d’ignorants sans preuve. Evidemment, nul n’ose parler des sciences humaines s’il ne les maîtrise au préalable. Et l’islam seul constitue un sujet libre que n’importe qui peut aborder sans le minimum d’initiation.
Concernant le Maouloud, il est commémoré pour la première fois au Caire, en Egypte, par Al-Muizz li-Dîn Allah, le quatrième Calife d’une dynastie chiite plus connue sous le nom des fatimides. C’est en l’an 362 de l’hégire que cette première célébration a eu lieu, presque 350 années après le décès du Prophète Mouhammad, paix et salut sur lui. Elle fut annulée en 490 de l’hégire avant d’être réinstaurée plus tard au septième siècle de l’hégire par le roi d’Erbil (partie kurde irakienne).
C’est une commémoration que le Messager de Dieu, paix et salut sur lui, n’a mentionnée nulle part. Elle n’est pas célébrée non plus par ses Compagnons, ni par les musulmans sunnites des premières heures de l’Islam. Incontestablement, cela fait de cette fête une innovation ou « bida ».
Etant considéré comme une adoration, il n’appartient plus à un serviteur de le célébrer. Car Seul le Législateur c’est-à-dire le Seigneur de l’Univers, par le biais de son Messager, est Habilité à créer un acte d’adoration. Allah, exalté soit-Il, dit : « Ou bien auraient-ils des associés (à Allah) qui auraient établi pour eux des lois religieuses qu’Allah n’a jamais permises ? » (Sourate 42 – Verset 21)
En expliquant ce verset du Saint Coran, Ibn Taymiyya nous fait savoir ceci : « la base est que toute adoration est interdite sauf s’il se trouve un texte l’autorisant. » Ibn Outhaymin le confirme en disant : « il est interdit de faire quoi que ce soit dans l’adoration, si ce n’est en présence d’une preuve le permettant. » Bien entendu, cette preuve doit provenir impérativement du Livre de Dieu ou de la sounna.
Le Prophète, paix et salut sur lui, déclara : « Celui qui innove dans notre affaire-ci (l’islam) une chose qui n’en fait pas partie, alors cette chose est rejetée. » Il poursuivit : « Celui qui accomplit un acte sur lequel il n’y a pas notre ordre alors cet acte est rejeté. » Il dit encore : « Certes Allah a voilé le repentir de tout innovateur jusqu’à ce qu’il délaisse son innovation. »
Allah, exalté soit-Il, nous expose ce rappel dans le Saint Coran : « Cette communauté, la vôtre, est une seule communauté, tandis que Je suis votre Seigneur. Craignez-Moi donc. Mais ils se sont divisés en sectes, chaque secte exultant de ce qu’elle détenait. Laisse-les dans leur égarement pour un certain temps. (Sourate 23, versets 52, 53 et 54) »
Au sujet de la compilation du Saint Coran en un livre unique et celle des hadiths du Messager de Dieu que beaucoup de gens traitent d’innovations, il faut savoir qu’il ne s’agit pas là d’actes cultuels, c’est à dire des actes d’adoration. Donc ils ne peuvent être assimilés à des innovations ou « bida » au sens islamique. La compilation du Saint Coran en un livre, bien qu’elle représente une des œuvres les plus nobles que l’homme peut accomplir sur cette terre, constitue simplement un travail d’organisation et de méthode inhérent à l’existence humaine dans la vie d’ici-bas.
Un telle geste peut être similaire à une action pratique quelconque. Par exemple, devant une situation naturelle donnée, toute personne consciente utilisant sa raison est capable de mettre sur pied, au moins, une solution appropriée.
De ce fait, quand beaucoup de compagnons du Prophète qui avaient mémorisé le Saint Coran périrent à la bataille d’Al-Yamâmah, Oumar (RA) demanda au Calife Abou Bakr (RA) de compiler le Saint Coran en un livre unique. Ce que ce dernier accepta à cause d’un souci de préserver la Révélation. N’est-ce pas une décision simple et logique ?
Et même si la compilation du Saint Coran en un livre unique et celle des hadiths du Prophète sont considérées comme des actes d’adoration, le prophète, paix et salut sur lui, ne nous a-t-il pas dit : « … celui d’entre vous qui vivra, assistera à beaucoup de divergences, ainsi accrochez-vous à ma sounna et à la sounna des califes droits et biens guidés après moi… » qui sont sans équivoque Abou Bakr, Oumar, Ousmane et Ali, qu’ils soient agréés.
Enfin par rapport à la prière faite en assemblée durant les nuits du mois de Ramadan appelée communément « Salatout Tarâwih » que certains musulmans considèrent comme une innovation, nous devons savoir que cette pratique n’est pas inventée après le décès de notre Bien-aimé, le Messager de Dieu, paix et salut sur lui, car c’est lui-même qui en est l’instigateur.
Bukhari et Muslim, qu’Allah leur accorde sa miséricorde, ont rapporté selon Aïcha, qu’elle soit agréée : « (Une fois) le Prophète, paix et salut sur lui, sortit au milieu de la nuit, et pria dans la mosquée et des hommes suivirent sa prière. Le lendemain ces hommes en parlèrent (à d’autres) et ils se réunirent encore plus nombreux (dans la mosquée), il pria et ils prièrent avec lui. Le lendemain, ces hommes en parlèrent (encore à d’autres).
Ainsi, dès la troisième nuit, ceux qui priaient dans la mosquée devinrent (encore) plus nombreux. Puis le Prophète, paix et salut sur lui, sortit, et ils suivirent sa prière. Et à la quatrième nuit, la mosquée fut débordée de gens qui priaient jusqu’à ce que le Prophète sorte pour la prière du matin. Lorsqu’il finit (la prière de) l’aube, il prononça la Chahada et dit : « En effet, votre présence ne m’était pas cachée (je savais que vous m’attendiez pour la prière de nuit), mais je crains qu’elle ne vous soit obligatoire et que vous en soyez incapable. »
Bien que ceci n’empêchait pas ses Compagnons de continuer à l’accomplir séparément.
Après le décès du Prophète, paix et salut sur lui, sachant qu’aucune pratique qui n’était pas obligatoire de son vivant ne pourra plus le devenir, le Calife Oumar, qu’il soit agréé, regroupa les musulmans qui priaient séparément dans la mosquée derrière un imam. Voilà pourquoi cette prière faite en assemblée durant les nuits du mois de Ramadan ne peut être considérée comme une innovation ou « bida ».
En définitive, Al Irbad Ibn Sariya, qu’il soit agréé, raconte : « le Prophète, paix et salut sur lui, nous a fait une exhortation éloquente qui a fait frémir nos cœurs et qui a fait pleurer nos yeux. Nous dîmes : Ô messager d’Allah, c’est comme s’il s’agissait d’une exhortation d’adieux, donne-nous donc des conseils.
Le Prophète, paix et salut sur lui, dit : « Je vous conseille la crainte d’Allah, d’écouter et d’obéir même si un esclave abbyssin prend de force le pouvoir sur vous. Et certes celui d’entre vous qui vivra, assistera à beaucoup de divergences, ainsi accrochez-vous à ma sounna et à la sounna des califes droits et biens guidés après moi. Et prenez garde aux chose nouvelles (dans la religion), car toute nouveauté est une innovation et toute innovation est égarement ».
Dans une autre version, il dit : « … et tout égarement mène à l’enfer. »
Dans le verset 31 de la sourate la Famille d’Imran, Allah, exalté soit-Il, s’adressant à Son Prophète, paix et salut sur lui, lui donne cet ordre : « Dis ! » c’est-à-dire parle aux musulmans en leur précisant : « Si vous aimez vraiment Allah, suivez-moi (Mouhammad), Allah vous aimera alors et vous pardonnera vos péchés… »
Selon ce verset, on peut dire que la condition d’Amour et de Pardon de notre Seigneur, pour nous serviteurs, réside dans notre ferme détermination de nous conformer à la Sounna. Ce qui se traduit par une imitation rigoureuse et fidèle du Messager d’Allah, paix et salut sur lui.
Suivre la sounna consiste simplement à connaître clairement la personnalité du Prophète Mouhammad, paix et salut sur lui, « l’obéir dans tout ce qu’il a ordonné, de croire à toutes les choses qu’il nous a informées, de nous écarter de tous les interdits contre lesquels il nous a mis en garde et de n’adorer Allah que par ce qu’il a légiféré. Telles sont les formalités nécessaires à remplir par toute personne prétendant vouloir honorer le prophète. »
Et comme l’a affirmé Imam Malick, qu’Allah lui accorde sa miséricorde : « Le succès des dernières générations ne s’obtiendra qu’à travers ce qui a fait le succès de la première génération de cette communauté. Ce qui ne faisait pas partie de la religion à cette époque-là n’en fait pas non plus partie aujourd’hui. »
Notre dernière invocation est qu’Allah, le Seigneur de l’Univers, soit loué et que la paix et la bénédiction soient sur notre Prophète Mouhammad, ainsi que sa Famille et ses Compagnons.

Joker: Folie à Deux was quickly booted from its top

With Halloween quickly approaching, Terrifier 3 slashed its way to the

The low-budget thriller, made for about $2 million and written and directed by Damien Leone, is an un-rated blood fest, which has received

Holding on to second place was The Wild Robot, an animated adventure about a
robot named Roz who is stranded on a small island after being shipwrecked.
There, she bonds with the animals, who are her new
neighbors, and begins taking care of an orphaned goose.

LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic model is not broken but Europe’s biggest economy has lost competitiveness over the past decade, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Monday.
« We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany, » he told journalists
ahead of a Eurogroup meeting.
The German economy is expected to contract by 0.2% in 2024,
an economy ministry spokesperson said on Monday, cutting the
forecast from a previous projection of 0.3% growth this year.
If realised, this would be the second consecutive year of contraction for Germany’s economy, which was the weakest among its large euro zone peers
last year with a 0.3% decline in gross domestic product.
Lindner said the government was introducing supply-side measures to try to
return the economy to growth.
« After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again, » Lindner said, adding that the
growth initiative was just a first step for an economic turnaround,
« but we have to build on it. »
AMBITION NEEDED
Lindner said « ambition » was needed to keep EU public finances in order, or to put them back in order
where necessary.
« I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions, » Lindner said.
« What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole. »
Lindner said he could not comment on the French budget plans because he had not had the
chance to talk with his French colleagues yet, but he would do so on Monday evening.
« We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with, »
Lindner said.
« We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner. »

Joker: Folie À Deux — starring Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix — has garnered
the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history as the film bombed at the box office on opening night.
The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’ and
‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday, October 4, but it only raked in $20
million at the domestic box office, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which
had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley
Quinn).
However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore
— the lowest score for a comic book movie.
Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds
a higher score with a C+.

Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but the number has since drastically dropped.
Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the
film first released in theaters – and eventually landed
a little over $1 billion in the global box office.
The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips
– had a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget increased for Folie À Deux to around $200 million.
The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from
both critics and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the 76th Venice International Film Festival.
Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker
(Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original Score.
The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month in September, where it earned a
12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a critic score of 32%
However, audiences have since taken to X after the movie released in theaters on Friday – and shared their opinions on the sequel, which features musical sequences.

While the majority of critics say Joker: Folie À Deux didn’t live up to expectations, others have dubbed the movie ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant.’
Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but said it lacked any thrill.
The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is best remembered
as one of the most subversive and original films of the last
decade, while its hugely anticipated sequel is just as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.
Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two stars but
credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following
the first movie’s $1billion success.
Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked
hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips
appeared to have no idea what to do with her.
Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie proves
‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

Meatballs are super-quick to make for a weeknight supper and there are many ways to serve them (see tip).
The veal in these gives a lightness to the result, but you can swap it out for all beef,
or flavourful pork mince. This is a good way to use up
any day-old bread hanging around. The recipe is easy to
double up on and freeze so you have a meal for an emergency.
SERVES 4
4 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for the onion
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped
400g tin chopped tomatoes
200g white bread (day old, if possible)
whole milk (enough to soak the bread)
500g beef mince
250g English veal mince
2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, plus extra to serve
4 anchovies, finely chopped
2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley
salt and freshly ground black pepper
350g dried spaghetti, to serve (optional; see tip)
1 First make a tomato sauce. In a saucepan, heat a dash of olive oil over a medium heat, then add half the chopped onion and half
the garlic, then sauté for 10 minutes to soften. Add the tomatoes and
when the liquid starts to bubble, reduce to a simmer and leave to cook,
stirring occasionally (about 20 minutes, to create a thick sauce), while you make the meatballs.
2 In a bowl, soak the bread in the milk until soft.
In another bowl, mix the beef, veal, parmesan, anchovies, half the parsley and
the rest of the onions and garlic. Then add the soaked bread, lightly squeezing any
excess milk from it first. Mix well and season with salt and pepper.
Mould the mixture into 12-14 meatballs.
3 Put the 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan over
a medium heat. When hot, add the meatballs, turning (for about 5
minutes) to ensure they colour all over. If necessary, cook in batches so they
are not all squashed together, setting each batch aside on a plate while you cook the remainder.
4 To finish, remove the meatballs from the pan and set aside.
Pour the tomato sauce into the frying pan over a medium heat.
Put the meatballs back into the pan for a further 4-5 minutes to cook
through. Sprinkle with the remaining parsley before serving.
TIP You can serve the meatballs as they come, or on top of spaghetti.
If you would prefer the latter, cook the pasta according
to the packet instructions until al dente.
Drain it in a colander, reserving a cupful of the cooking water to loosen the meatball sauce if necessary, and then transfer it back to the pan and toss it with a little
olive oil and butter. Put the spaghetti on a serving plate and
top with the meatballs and sauce. Finish with a
drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of parmesan.

An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was,
once upon a time, an offer you simply didn’t refuse.
Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else.
Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes,
sure didn’t come cheap. There may have been other things on the menu,
but no one paid them much heed. This was all about lashings of the black
stuff.
Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there are
few better dishes on earth…only the price, at just under £150,
is ridiculous’
Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to
be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
Until last year, when she reopened as a members’
club in another Mayfair backstreet. But a £2,000 a year membership
fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.
Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather
handsome – albeit near empty – dining room,
lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of
a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of
table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud
soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.
Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty,
clad in diaphanous couture. They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely
via camera phone. Pose, click, check, filter, post.
Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.
We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia
croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to.
Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.
We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma that had she
burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a
study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar,
gently saline, raises them to the sublime.
Only the price, at just under £150 each, is
ridiculous. But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day
if I could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.
One taste is never enough.

Rubies are often referred to as the ‘king of gemstones’ and their vibrant color – caused by the presence of chromium – is often associated with passion, love, and power.
The name ‘ruby’ comes from the Latin word ‘ruber’ which means red.
Rubies are incredibly sought after for their beauty and durability,
they are ranked 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness (qualitative scale that measures the relative hardness of minerals and other materials by their resistance to
scratching), second to diamonds.
Beyond their sparkle and strength, they have held cultural
significance for centuries.
Throughout history, rubies have been associated with nobility and

According to Melee the Show founders Lauren Wolf and Rebecca Overmann, ruby

the film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.
It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner Bros.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any
estimates suggested by anonymous « insiders » or « rival executives » are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported
as fact.’
‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its
home viewing and ancillary run.’
So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.

the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy
in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million]
worldwide. Not a billion. People showed up because
that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of
the film does not include a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips
declined to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with
claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say
no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with
DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took
control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut
screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is
kind of a Warner Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery
merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.
A source directly involved with the film recently shared:
‘The one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the
fan expectations are, you’re going to fail’; director Todd Phillips seen with Gaga and Phoenix at the LA premiere

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.
A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.
A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to Todd.
And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re
going to fail.
Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at the
Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back –
with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully
supported the decision to bring the film to Venice.
Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie
Beatz and Steve Coogan.

Oct 22 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International’s
(PMI) shares hit record highs on Tuesday after the cigarette maker raised its annual profit forecast and beat third-quarter estimates thanks to higher prices and strong demand for its smoking alternatives.
PMI has invested billions of dollars in developing substitutes for cigarettes
as health-conscious consumers switch to smoking alternatives in some markets, including its IQOS
heated tobacco device and ZYN nicotine pouches, which are now
a key focus for investors.
U.S. ZYN shipments in the quarter grew 41.4% over
the prior-year period, rebounding after supply constraints curtailed rapid growth.
The Marlboro maker has been investing to expand production capacity for ZYN, in an effort to meet strong
demand.
The company’s flagship heated tobacco device, IQOS, also saw strong growth
in regions such as Japan, Europe and Indonesia, reassuring investors
after volumes lagged expectations in the past.
« We delivered exceptionally strong performance, with record quarterly net revenues and earnings per share, »
said Chief Executive Officer Jacek Olczak,
adding IQOS growth had also accelerated.
PMI’s shares rose 9%, and remained almost 8% higher at 11.43 a.m.
(1543 GMT) in New York trading.
The company also enjoyed higher shipment volumes for cigarettes, with higher pricing also driving a 5.2% increase in revenues
from its combustible tobacco business.
PMI raised its forecast for 2024 adjusted earnings per share, excluding currency,
to between $6.85 and $6.91, compared with its prior range of $6.67 to $6.79.
It reported revenue of $9.91 billion for the third quarter,
versus analysts’ estimates of $9.69 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Its quarterly adjusted profit of $1.91 per share also
beat estimates of $1.82 per share.
Last week, Philip Morris said it, along with peers British American Tobacco and
Japan Tobacco, would pay C$32.5 billion ($23.6 billion) to settle long-running health-related lawsuits in Canada.

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated U.S.
roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice analysts said was positive for its competitors in the short term.
The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for
more than two thirds of its net revenues to come from « smoke-free » products by 2030, up from 50% in 2025,
as it tries to transform its image from a cigarette
purveyor to a driver of the shift to healthier alternatives.
Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S., the world’s largest market for nicotine products,
and had been expecting it from May 2024 next year. Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists across a host of key U.S.
states ahead of the launch.
Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two unnamed U.S.
states from 2024, but a national launch would only come after PMI receives approval
to sell the latest version, known as IQOS ILUMA.
The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected it from 2025,
he continued.
« We need to warm up the tyres, » he said of the initial
launch, which would help PMI fine tune its approach.
A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he continued, adding launching in 10 states in the first year would
make sense.
Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products
in the U.S. « now looks delayed until ILUMA, » Owen Bennett, equity analyst at
Jefferies, said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.
Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products
was no longer a priority. It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues to come from sales of such products
by 2025.
Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand
ZYN, Olczak said, adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance
of big tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.
PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for revenue and
earnings per share, and ambitious volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.
ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the
U.S. would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues there in 2024, even before IQOS ILUMA,
executives said.

Joker: Folie À Deux is heading to streaming,

The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent
familiar with director Todd Phillips’ process
telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during
the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter
Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city,
it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide. Not a billion.
People showed up because that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of
the film does not include a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips,
DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to
Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is
kind of a Warner Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged
in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make
the sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20
per cent less.
A source directly involved with the film recently shared: ‘The one thing about genre stuff:
If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to
fail’; director Todd Phillips seen with Gaga and Phoenix at the LA premiere September 30
However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.
A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.
A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one
could get through to Todd. And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations
are, you’re going to fail.
Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the
film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the decision to
bring the film to Venice.
Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.
