Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else.
Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap.

There may have been other things on the menu, but no one paid them much heed.
This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was
taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and
transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s. It prospers to this day.
Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet. Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.

But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning
the doors were opened to the great unwashed.

Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome
– albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is
broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.

The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale,
luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via
camera phone. Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur
that tastes far better than it ought to. Next door, a large table fills with
a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.

We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of
such effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance
of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment,
insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream,
are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime.
Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous. But there
are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if I could.

But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar. One taste is never enough.

Adam Bandt said people ‘can make their own judgment’
about him enjoying an exclusive and discretionary perk from Qantas during a tense exchange with a journalist live on radio.

The Greens leader has been outed as a member of
the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge, an invitation-only set of catered waiting areas and services handed out by
the airline in what has been called ‘Australia’s most exclusive club’.

Mr Bandt was challenged on Monday by ABC Radio National stand-in host Steve
Cannane that he was ‘enjoying free hospitality from a company that has illegally sacked hundreds of workers’.

Mr Bandt replied: ‘And I’ll declare that and people can make their
own judgement about what they think about that.’

Cannane was referring to the Federal Court’s ruling that Qantas illegally sacked 1,700 workers at the start of the Covid pandemic in a case brought by Transport Workers Union. 

Commenting on the sacking in June of 2020, Mr Bandt called it
a ‘devastating day for thousands of Qantas workers & their families’
in a Facebook post. ‘We’re thinking of you,’ he wrote.

Cannane challenged Mr Bandt further saying: ‘You don’t think you should be a little purer on this and just not take their
(Qantas’s) hospitality?’

Mr Bandt said he always made declarations about matters such as this and argued that the party’s policies to tax big corporations heavily show
the perks were not impacting the Greens.

an international one he is alleged to have received from Qantas in new book The Chairman’s Lounge authored by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.

The Greens are licking their electoral wounds after
the Queensland state poll, where they are battling
to hold onto their two seats after stating they aimed to triple their representation in parliament.

With 72 per cent of the vote counted they appear to have retained the Brisbane seat of Maiwar but suffered a 4.6 per cent swing
to the ALP.

However, they remain behind South Brisbane, which has seen a massive 12.4 per
cent swing to Labor with 64 per cent of votes counted.

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair Isle knit.

Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out from the back of our
wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper
(especially the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy in Bridget
Jones’s Diary) or for a winter sport holiday (specifically for après-ski), the Fair Isle jumper has now
become somewhat of a fashion statement.

The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting technique to create
those distinctive patterns with multiple colours.
It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained a casual wardrobe
staple for members of the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton, whose jumper collection includes at least three different Fair Isle designs.

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered a Fair Isle vest by Molly Goddard over a light blue button-down in a snap for Instagram.
The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest from Cotswolds-based knitwear brand Cooking Apple, and sported a chunky Fair Isle
crewneck with white, straight-leg jeans, black loafers and an oversized, black leather blazer to ring in the
festive season at private members’ club in London last year.

A host of designers have dropped Fair Isle-inspired knits for AW24,
proving the multicoloured jumpers have become a timeless investment.

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author
dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity
online, in newspapers and on TV and radio. 

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s
Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and
calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is
‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but
reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by
personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which
the Prime Minister has categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22
flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips
to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu. 

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the messenger and,
in turn, shot himself in the foot. 

He said Aston was using the accusations to sell
books and said he was hiding his employment history. 

‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,
‘ the Prime Minister said. 

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers
to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of
Cook before Scott Morrison. 

‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the first line of
the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just
before his book launch. 

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the book,
Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the
Prime Minister made. 

‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about,

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the

pay their mortgage or rent, the latest blow
to his credibility has led to calls for him to
resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though. 

‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this
part to get this far. I really am shocked at how
it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone who
reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit job
on Anthony Albanese. This book is about Qantas. 

‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National,
you name it. They’ve been doing it for more than a
generation.

‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia.
I’m not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about
and it never was.’

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia
and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese. 

‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public
is with the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long
time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised
to him, is what I’ve seen. 

‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the
front row of the Australian Open Tennis. 

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for
12 years and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).

‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to
sit in the front row of the International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.

‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it
looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the claims in the book
are) just another example of that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s
travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and asks
if their flight can be upgraded. 

The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight
closes, you’ll get upgraded.

‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted and
you are guaranteed. You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going « Geez, I hope there is a spare seat ».

‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat
and the only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO.
No other executive can do that.

‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised
these upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel journalist,
and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there. 

‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane,
it’s very hard to go back.

‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured
cars and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …

‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel. 

‘A normal person would say « Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events. 

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday
signalled a slower than anticipated U.S. roll out of its IQOS
heated tobacco device, a choice analysts said was positive for its competitors in the short term.

The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said
it aims for more than two thirds of its net revenues to come from « smoke-free » products by 2030, up from 50%
in 2025, as it tries to transform its image from a cigarette purveyor to a driver of the shift to healthier alternatives.

Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S., the world’s largest market
for nicotine products, and had been expecting it from May 2024
next year. Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists across a host of key U.S.
states ahead of the launch.

Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would
launch in four cities in two unnamed U.S. states from 2024, but a national
launch would only come after PMI receives approval
to sell the latest version, known as IQOS ILUMA.

The company was planning to apply for approval
in October and expected it from 2025, he continued.

« We need to warm up the tyres, » he said of the initial launch, which would
help PMI fine tune its approach.

A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases,
he continued, adding launching in 10 states in the first
year would make sense.

Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
« now looks delayed until ILUMA, » Owen Bennett, equity
analyst at Jefferies, said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.

Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products was
no longer a priority. It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues
to come from sales of such products by 2025.

Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch
brand ZYN, Olczak said, adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance
of big tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.

PMI also announced updated medium-term targets
including for revenue and earnings per share, and ambitious
volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.

ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S. would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues there in 2024, even before IQOS ILUMA,
executives said.

March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc is working on options
to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory
and operating environment in the country following its invasion of Ukraine.

The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from
Russia in 2021, said on Thursday it has discontinued sale of several cigarette products and canceled all product launches for the year in Russia.

It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA sticks,
heated tobacco units intended for use with its IQOS ILUMA devices, as well
as related investment of $150 million.

Earlier this month, Philip Morris had suspended its planned investments and
decided to scale down manufacturing operations in the country.

Rival Imperial Brands too has started talks to transfer
its Russian business to a local third party, joining BAT in exiting the sanction-hit country.

For Bolly bling without the sting, head to the Loire Valley,
where the Bollinger family crafts this Crémant using the same traditional method as their Champagnes.

Made primarily from Chenin Blanc, which thrives in the Loire, it undergoes 24 months of
aging, delivering a Crémant with depth that offers a charming twist on Bollinger’s rich Champagne style – with change to spare.

Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne, £280

Saving: £248 a bottle 

Renowned producer Louis Roederer is the
name behind the iconic Cristal Champagne – a prized choice among
celebrities, especially when served in a flashy jeroboam, complete with sparklers in the ‘VIP section’ of nightclubs.
But if the £270 price tag brings tears to your eyes, try Cristal’s Californian cousin, Quartet.
Crafted in the cool Anderson Valley, it offers a taste of
luxury for almost a tenth of the cost.

Laurent Perrier Rosé Champagne, £80

Swap for? Morrisons The Best Crémant De Limoux Rosé NV, £12.50

Saving: £67.50 a bottle 

If you’re after something pink, grab this super chic Crémant de Limoux from
Morrisons – delivering luxe for less. With a delicate effervescence and notes of strawberries and cream, it hints at pink Champagne
at five times the price. And here’s a little-known fact: legend has it that the art of fizz was first discovered in Limoux, in the South of
France – though our friends in Champagne may disagree.

Swap for? Segura Viudas Brut Vintage Premium Cava, £12

Saving:  £303 a bottle

For showstopping-style on a shoestring, skip Harrods, forget Jay-Z’s red-carpet-ready ‘Ace of Spades’ and head to
Sainsbury’s for Segura Viudas premium cava, complete with
a shield that’s delightfully close to a spade.
For the price of one bottle of that Champagne, you could bag 26 bottles of this classy cava –
and, honestly, after a few glasses, who’s noticing the difference?

Ruinart Blanc de Blancs Champagne, £89

Swap for? Fortnum’s Franca Contea Franciacorta Brut NV, £26.50

Saving: £62.50 a bottle

‘Blanc de Blancs’ meaning ‘white of whites’ is the name for bubbles made solely from white
grapes – typically Chardonnay in Champagne, delivering
elegance and finesse, à la Ruinart. Prices have crept up
as Blanc de Blancs become all the rage, but hop over
the border to the hidden gem of Franciacorta in Lombardy,
northern Italy, and you’ll find complex, vinous sips with plenty of
flair, like this Fortnum’s pick.

Pol Roger Champagne, £55

Swap for? Graham Beck Selection Sparkling Wine, £13.50

Saving:  £41.50 a bottle

I served these delicious South African bubbles at my wedding – quaffed
in record time, with nobody realising it wasn’t Champagne.
As well as my own big day, Graham Beck has
made an appearance at state events for Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama, earning it
the title of ‘presidential pick’ for sparkling wine.

And you’ll save a few quid compared to other politician favourites, like Pol Roger.

Mumm Champagne, £39

Swap for? Mumm Marlborough Brut Prestige, £25

Saving:  £14 a bottle

From Marlborough, New Zealand’s premier region and home of top Brit sip, Sauvignon Blanc, comes a
fresh take on fizz. Blessed with sunshine and a cool climate, Marlborough produces wines
that are vibrant and crisp. Here, a blend of traditional Champagne varieties
– Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier – offers an easy-drinking, bright character, and a great value sub for Mumm’s beloved bubbles.

Veuve Clicquot Champagne, £48

Swap for? Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut NV,
£14.99

Saving:  £33.01 a bottle

First launched over a decade ago at £12.99, Aldi has miraculously kept their best-selling Veuve Monsigny Champagne under £15.
For a sprightly, quaffable style, it’s unbeatable at that price –
perfect for Buck’s Fizz at Christmas Day brunch, canapés,
and a refreshing post-turkey sip. It’s worth mentioning that the
Premier Cru label at £21.99 is a real step up and fantastic value too.

Moët & Chandon Champagne, £44

Swap for? Chandon Brut Argentina, £23

Saving: £21 a bottle 

From Champagne giant Moët & Chandon, Chandon Brut is a Champagne-style
bubbly from Mendoza, Argentina. If you’re thinking
Mendoza is known for its hot climate and big, bold Malbec reds, think
again – Chandon’s vineyards are situated
in the foothills of the Andes at over 1,000
metres, where cooling influences help retain that desirable freshness in the grapes.
