won’t like it because it’s not made for you. The dynamic between Harley and Joker was
brilliant and showcased the ‘obsession’ that is key to that duo.’ 

The movie’s box office collapse was swift and has many in the industry
wondering: How did the highly anticipated sequel to an Oscar-winning, billion-dollar
film with the same creative team go wrong? Just three weeks ago, tracking services
pegged the movie for a $70 million debut, which would still have been down a fair amount from
Joker’s record-breaking $96.2 million launch in October 2019. 

A number of fans took to social media to defend the controversial sequel

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth,
in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise 

Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival, where
it premiered in competition like the first movie
and even got a 12-minute standing ovation.

But the homecoming glow was short-lived, and
the fragile foundation would crumble in the coming weeks with its Rotten Tomatoes score dropping from 63 percent at Venice to 33 percent
by its first weekend in theaters. Perhaps even more surprising were the audience reviews: Ticket buyers polled on opening night gave
the film a deadly D CinemaScore. Exit polls from PostTrak weren’t
any better. It got a meager half star out of five possible.

‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’
said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.
‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget.

A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would
be a solid debut.’

Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film to produce, though reported figures
vary at exactly how pricey it was to make. Phillips told Variety that it was less than the reported $200 million; Others have
it pegged at $190 million. Warner Bros. released the film in 4,
102 locations in North America. About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.

Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens,
bringing its total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next two
weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.

Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks
Animation’s The Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total
to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice  took
third place in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers
One landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out the
top five.

The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White Bird, flopped with just $1.5 million from just over 1,
000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.

Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last
year, but Joker’s start is an unwelcome twist for theater owners
hoping to narrow the box office deficit.

Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to make something as ‘audacious’ as the first film.
The sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold , as a Joker superfan,
and delved further into the mind of Arthur Fleck, imprisoned at Arkham and awaiting trial for the murders he committed in the first.
It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and dance numbers to old standards.

Gaga even released a companion album called  »Harlequin,’ alongside the
film.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie.
In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But
fans often ignore the advice of critics, especially when it comes
to opening their wallets to see revered comic book
characters on the big screen.

‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said. ‘But except for a couple
of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want to know what they´re getting when they´re going to the theater.

They want the tried and true, the familiar.’ 

Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started with the idea to make the Joker sequel
a musical. ‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see a musical sequel,’ he wrote
on Saturday.

The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse, then about whether
it might send the wrong message to the wrong type of person. And yet people
still flocked to see what the fuss was about. Joker went
on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture and best director,
and three wins. It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing
R-rated film of all time, until this summer when Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine took the crown.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.
and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

DAMASCUS/NEW YORK, Dec 10 (Reuters) –

An Israeli military incursion into Syria has reached about 25 km
(16 miles) southwest of Damascus, Syrian security sources said on Tuesday, after Israel seized a buffer zone in southern Syria and launched air
strikes on Syrian army and air bases overnight.

Israel’s military operation into Syria comes two days
after the lightning overthrow of

President Bashar al-Assad

by a rebel alliance left Syrians, regional
countries and world powers nervous about what comes
next.

A Syrian security source said Israeli troops reached Qatana, which is 10 km (six miles)
into Syrian territory east of a demilitarised zone
separating Israeli-occupied Golan Heights
from Syria.

The Israeli military declined comment.

Israel has said it will not become involved
in conflict in Syria and that its seizure of the buffer
zone was a defensive move.

Egypt, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have condemned the incursion.
Saudi Arabia said the move would « ruin Syria’s chances of restoring security ».

Regional security sources and officers within the now fallen Syrian army said heavy
Israeli airstrikes continued against military installations and airbases across Syria
overnight, destroying dozens of helicopters and jets, as well as
Republican Guard assets in and around Damascus.

The rough tally of 200 raids had left nothing of the Syrian army’s assets, they
said. Israel said its airstrikes would carry on for days but told the U.N.
Security Council that it was not intervening in Syria’s conflict.

It said it had taken « limited and temporary measures »
solely to protect its security. The United Nations Security Council met behind closed doors late on Monday, and diplomats said they were
still in shock at how quickly Assad’s overthrow unfolded over 12 days, after a
13-year civil war that was locked in stalemate for years.

« Everyone was taken by surprise, everyone, including the members of the council. So we have to wait and see and watch … and evaluate how the situation will develop, » Russian U.N.
Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told reporters after the body met.

Russia played a major role in supporting Assad’s government and helping it fight the
rebels. The Syrian leader fled Damascus for Moscow on Sunday, ending more than 50 years of
brutal rule by his family.

With the mood in Damascus still celebratory, Assad’s prime minister, Mohammed Jalali, on Monday agreed to hand power to the rebel-led Salvation Government, an administration based in rebel-held territory in northwest Syria.

HOLLOWED OUT The main rebel commander Ahmed al-Sharaa, better known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani, met with Jalali and Vice President Faisal Mekdad to discuss the transitional government,
a source familiar with the discussions told Reuters. Jalali said the handover could take
days to carry out.

Al Jazeera television reported the transitional authority would be
headed by Mohamed al-Bashir, who has headed the Salvation Government.
The steamroller advance of the militia alliance headed
by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a former al-Qaeda affiliate, was a generational turning point for the Middle East.

The civil war that began in 2011 killed hundreds of thousands, caused one of
the biggest refugee crises of modern times and left cities
bombed to rubble, countryside depopulated and the economy hollowed out by global sanctions.

But the rebel alliance has not communicated plans for Syria’s future, and there is no template for such a transition in the fractious region.

Oil prices rose more than 1% on Monday, partly on concerns that instability in Syria,
which is not a major oil producer, could raise regional tensions, analysts said.

« This is an incredible moment for the Syrian people, » Deputy U.S.
Ambassador to the U.N. Robert Wood said in New York.
« We’re really focused right now on trying to see where the situation goes. Can there be a governing authority in Syria that respects the rights and dignities of the Syrian population? » The U.S.
was seeking ways to engage with Syrian rebel groups and is reaching out
to partners in the region such as Turkey to start informal diplomacy, Washington said.

Qatari diplomats spoke with HTS on Monday, an official briefed on the
developments told Reuters, as regional states race to open contact with
the group. There were tentative signs of a return to order.
Syria’s banks will reopen on Tuesday, and the oil ministry called on all employees in the sector to head
to work on Tuesday, adding that protection would be provided to ensure their
safety.

Reuters reporters saw four mini-buses arriving at the Central Bank of
Syria, with employees disembarking and walking into the building for their first
day of work since Assad´s fall.

« It´s a new shift, it´s a new day, a new year, a new life, » said Sumayra al-Mukli.
Golani has vowed to rebuild Syria, and HTS has spent years trying to soften its image to reassure foreign nations and minority groups
within Syria.

But fears of reprisals remained. HTS said it will not hesitate
to hold security and army officers involved in torturing the Syrian people accountable,
describing them as criminals and murderers.

« We will release a list that includes the names of the most senior officials involved in the torturing of the Syrian people, » Golani
said in a statement. « Rewards will be offered to those who will provide information about senior army and security officers involved in war crimes. »

HTS is designated as a terrorist organisation by many states and the U.N.,
and its governing credentials are uncertain.

« Syrians are looking forward to establishing a state of freedom, equality, rule of law, democracy, and we will join efforts to rebuild our country, to rebuild what was destroyed, and to rebuild the future, better future of Syria, » Syria’s U.N.
