Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?

In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that
the major parties look set to come together to support.

The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy
individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual
electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race,
and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less
than the major parties currently spend.

The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes
political donations in the first place.

So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity
while using their cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use
their wealth at all will be limited.

The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures
of donations need to be made.

At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you only
find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.

In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected
into campaigning by the wealthy.

Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy
and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’

seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,
000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having
done so. And how much they can donate will be capped.

Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and
‘a rort, not a reform’. 

They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s
proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.

I had to double check who was criticising what exactly
before even starting to write this column.

Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important
transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by
the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench
effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.

More fool me.

The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor and is opposed
by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.

It makes you wonder what they have to hide.

Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.

Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer

Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court

The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to
tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and Senator
Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)

The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals. 

And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past, contrary
to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.

Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art
of political donations.

The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way.
It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the
crossbench out.

They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time
to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.

Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the
Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.

As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable
of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.

But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their
support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.

They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.

To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy
and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to social media after its release last month to defend the sequel to
Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box
office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce
a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady
Gaga joining the franchise.

‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as
divisive as people are making it out to be. I love that
the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.

It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’

Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of
the first film’s fandom and the musical elements were a lot of
fun.’

Hamas’ leader Yahya Sinwar could have given an order to execute all the hostages who remain in Gaza if he died,
a top Israeli negotiator has claimed. 

Sinwar died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered him by chance,
sending a drone to kill the terror leader. 

Gershon Baskin, the Israeli negotiator who oversaw Sinwar’s 2011 release from
an Israeli prison, along with 1,026 Palestinian prisoners, in exchange for the return of kidnapped soldier
Gilad Shilat, said that his death was a ‘moment of either opportunity or a moment of doom.’

‘A moment of doom because there are rumours that Sinwar
instructed people holding hostages that, should he be killed, they
should kill their hostages,’ he told the Telegraph. 

At the time of Sinwar’s death, just over 100 hostages remained in Gaza,
with 60 thought to still be alive. 

Those who remain alive are at risk of never being returned to their families, according Haaretz,
which reported on Sunday that top US officials, including Secretary of State Anthony Blinken,
have assessed there is a slim chance of a deal being brokered, given the tensions between Israel
and Hamas.

Five of those who were recovered had been attending the Nova music festival when Hamas terrorists
began slaughtering festivalgoers, while taking others hostage.

For a few seconds, the two stars sat in silence as they both
waited for the other to answer the question.

‘Tell them how you feel, Joaquin,’ Lady Gaga, 38, said to her
costar as she held out a fake microphone in front of him.

‘It’s so hard to talk about but I think we feel like we achieved what we set out to do,’ Joaquin, 49, simply stated. 

Someone on X, formerly Twitter, posted the moment online last week and it went viral, gaining more then 437,000 views in a matter of days – and many users
took their initial silence as proof that they ‘didn’t like’ the film.

The internet has been flooded with negative posts about the flick ever since it premiered,
with one user branding it as a ‘bore’ and another claiming it had ‘no
plot.’

Many social media users have also slammed the movie’s final scene, which saw main character Arthur
Fleck (portrayed by Joaquin) brutally stabbed to death by a fellow inmate.

This meant that the man that audiences had been watching over the course of the two movies was never the Joker at all,
but in fact, the infamous villain from the Batman series was really just the random inmate who killed
Arthur in the last moments of the film.

The shocking twist left numerous viewers unsatisfied, and they
took to social media to share their frustration.

While chatting with Good Morning Britain last

‘That ending? It’s so bad that not only it ruins Joker 2 but also the first Joker for the audience,’ read a
fourth tweet.

‘The Joker had so much potential but that f**king ending ruined everything,’ a
fifth said. 

The Todd Phillips-directed musical serves as a follow-up to the
2019 box office hit, which was simply titled
Joker. 

The first film grossed over $1 billion and at the time was the highest-grossing
R-rated film of all time. It received 11 Oscar nominations – two of which it
won. 

The sequel, however, has already been much less successful.
It had a lackluster $40 million debut at the box office in its first
weekend, and has a low rating of 33 percent and 31 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘Undoing much of the goodwill from its predecessor,
the sequel convolutes what could have been a unique character study into a bloated encore that goes out with a whimper,’ reads one review. 

Another critic wrote, ‘This movie is a disjointed mess and a waste of time.
It’s just tired, not particularly interesting, but it does look good from a production design standpoint.’

Lady Gaga is set to release her seventh studio album in February.

Despite lead single Disease stalling on the Hot 100 at No.
27, the 38-year-old is forging ahead with her
next album, which she described as both ‘fun’ and ‘darker.’

Speaking to Vogue magazine about the project, Gaga said that
she’s been focused on the production side of her new songs. 

‘I love producing — I always have — and something that was really
important to me making my seventh studio album was blending live instrumentation with
programming,’ she explained.

‘The album is chaotic from a genre perspective
— it is genre-bending, and I think in that way is a deeply personal look into my mind as a producer and the way I
think about music.’

She also said that the album has a ‘darker pop’ sound that’s more in line
with her iconic 2009 album, The Fame Monster. 

However, fans need not be worried that Gaga is going too somber with her sound. 

‘The album is not extremely serious in that it’s very fun and meant to
be enjoyed at a party, in a club, or at home having personal fun time — to be free of your
worries at home or walking through life,’ she insisted. 

Lady Gaga is focused on releasing her seventh studio album this February following the disappointing reception to lead single Disease

Gaga released the album’s lead single Disease last month to rave reviews from
music critics, who lauded it as a return to the star’s roots.

Unfortunately, the acclaim failed to translate to the charts, with Disease debuting at No.
27 on the Hot 100 – her worst entry for a lead single in 16 years.

On the bright side, Gaga is currently enjoying one of her biggest hits in years thanks to her Bruno Mars duet, Die With a Smile. 

The ballad has so far reached No. 2 on the Hot 100 and No.
1 on the Pop Airplay Chart.

It is prime.

The World’s 50 Best organisation recently expanded its repertoire from
bars to beds with its 50 Best Hotel awards.

I check into the one that bagged the top spot – the Capella Bangkok.

As with most luxury hotels, an army of staff awaits arriving guests, and I’m quickly
whisked through the enormous lobby to the Living Room.
In this library-like space – a staple of Capella hotels – check-in kicks off with a welcome drink (I opt for a Coke, although options include sparkling wine
and guava juice).

The 101 rooms, suites and villas all face the river. My riverfront room covers 61 square metres (656 sq feet) and feels enormous, despite being the
smallest accommodation category.

Clever positioning of a recessed balcony area, divided from the bedroom by glass walls, is why I
initially think I’ve bagged a corner suite.

Vast expanses of glass mean an abundance of natural light, and it’s only later when I realise
that behind the bathroom mirrors is nothing but an internal glass wall between me
and the bedroom, with its floor-to-ceiling windows.

For a nano-second I panic that the red lights atop distant skyscrapers are
phones of office workers laughing at the oblivious, semi-naked Capella guest (me).

the mini bar’s non-alcoholic drinks are complimentary
and my bathroom highlight is the set of boxed vanity items that slot together to reveal a
riverside scene.

Beyond my room, I’m reminded of a James Bond villain’s lair – in a good way.

Despite being close to Bangkok’s centre, there’s a huge sense
of space, and it often feels like I’m the
only guest as I pass through ceiling-height doors that swoosh silently open to reveal cathedral-like public spaces with fantastic riverside
views.

The other side of the Chao Phraya River, with its tangles of cranes, isn’t anything to write home
about – it’s the river itself that makes the view.

During the day it’s a hive of activity, a constant flow of fishing boats and
river taxis chugging along what’s known as Bangkok’s lifeblood.

Later, they’re replaced by tourist-laden party boats deploying retina-burning
spotlights from top deck dancefloors. This is why it’s worth choosing your
seating carefully in the hotel’s riverside Phra
Nakhon restaurant, where iPad menus maintain the minimalism.

I enjoy dining outside, watching the flow of party boats, even if my pomelo salad comes with a soundtrack of Shakira.
Somewhat quieter is Michelin-starred Cote by Mauro Colagreco, for dishes inspired by the Italian and French Riviera.

Tamara writes: ‘I’m unsure how the hotel feels about its [best in the world]
accolade. Perhaps it’s a blessing and a curse.
When a hotel is named the world’s best, my radar goes up a notch’

My fellow guests include a brash Brazilian guest shouting business
deals into his phone during dinner, and at breakfast, six Americans discussing their love of Fiji. 

When I’m not lounging in my room flashing office workers, my favourite
spot is Stella, the Art Deco cocktail bar and – when I visit – the setting for
the hotel’s nightly Cin Cin hour, when guests enjoy complimentary drinks.

I suspect few guests stray far from the property, preferring to lounge poolside, or in the spa – when I ask a concierge for directions to Siam SkyTrain station, she assumes I mean Icon Siam, the luxury shopping centre nearby,
and seems baffled I’d want to venture further afield.

Admittedly, despite the complimentary river shuttle, there are endless reasons to stay put,
ranging from family-friendly activities such as painting workshops to muay
Thai masterclasses.

I’m unsure how the hotel feels about its accolade.
Perhaps it’s a blessing and a curse. When a hotel is named the world’s best, my radar goes up a notch.

Maybe it’s my Britishness, but the night before I’d stayed at
a Singapore hotel where my minibar fridge contains a tiny milk jug.
Luckily, I bring my own teabags to the Capella because my tea-related
supplies amount to a trio of teabags (only one of
which is English breakfast), and there is no milk. 

I also find it slightly frustrating that the television hangs somewhat lopsidedly from the wall.
Minor complaints, but perhaps ones that shouldn’t exist at the world’s best hotel.

So is it? I’ve stayed in many, and I’d say no, but there are a lot
of hotels, after all. 

I can think of several that would bag higher positions on my own top 50.
These include London’s Shangri-La the Shard,
with its beautifully furnished bedrooms, Hoshinoya Tokyo, an insanely luxurious ryokan, and the Swissôtel The Stamford Singapore, where employees’ attentiveness always
blows me away. 

Best in the world? Maybe not. Top 10? Definitely.

It was a dream come true for Beyonce’s No. 1 fan… comedian Kevin Hart.

On Tuesday, celebrities and music lovers flocked to the Staples Center
to see the 32-year-old diva on the Los Angeles date of her Mrs.
Carter World Tour.

During the show, Hart caught the attention of former
frontwoman of Destiny’s Child as he enthusiastically responded
to her performance while standing in the front row.

The mother of baby Blue Ivy wore a bright blue glittery body suit that showcased the prima donna’s curvacious physique. 

Standing in her matching four inch matching blue heets, she towered over Hart as
she looked down at him from stage, amused at his feedback from her performance.

Former Dancing with the Stars competitor and singer Christina Milian stood next to Hart,
looking on as 33-year-old star went crazy for the diva.

The songstress laughed at Hart’s antics, smiling broadly as the two shared a momentary giggle.

that he was a little jealous of husband Jay-Z.

Joaquin Phoenix has revealed that he spoke with filmmaker Christopher
Nolan about playing Joker which ultimately went to Heath Ledger.

The 50-year-old actor – whose latest flick Joker: Folie
À Deux could be streamed now – got candid about potentially playing the
supervillain before he actually portrayed him.

Joaquin recently appeared on Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton podcast as he revealed that he spoke to the 54-year-old Oscar-winning filmmaker Nolan about portraying Joker over a decade before.

He said: That didn’t… wasn’t going to
happen for a number of reasons. I wasn’t ready then.

‘That’s one of those things sometimes where you go:
« Why am I not doing this project? What is stopping me from doing this? Well it’s not about me, there’s something else. There’s another person that’s going to do something that’s like, I can’t imagine what it would be if we didn’t have Heath Ledger‘s performance in that film. »‘

The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and about $100
million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.

It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break even —
when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner
Bros. sources claim the number is $375 million.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any estimates suggested
by anonymous « insiders » or « rival executives »
are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact.’

‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included
with this week’s opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue
throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.’

So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.

In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4
million globally after three days of release.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures, yet ended up being slammed by critics and failed to ignite at the box office.

‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC
bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from
the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month. 

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck,
mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the
film does not include a DC Studios logo.

A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at
the end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims
that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to
Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran –
who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a
reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the
sequel at a lower price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at the
Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported
the decision to bring the film to Venice. 

Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared
in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener,
Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

in power since Namibia’s 1990 independence from South africa.

Wednesday’s queues were caused by many technical problems, including
issues with tablets used to register voters and shortages of ballot papers.

In some cases, torches used to show up invisible ink had run out of
batteries and mobile voting teams had left areas with voters still in the queues, it said.

Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral commission extended the vote for a second time, giving
Namibians until Saturday evening to vote.

In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling station picked to reopen, about 60 people showed up on Friday, including Kluivert Muuondjo who arrived at 4:30 am.

The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:
00 pm on Wednesday but left before being able to vote as he had exams the next day.

« Everyone will have the chance to vote, » he said.
But because Namibians can vote at any given polling station, he

Aochamus who represents the Independent Patriots for Change

her new film, Joker: Folie à Deux. 

The singer turned actress takes a starring role as Harley
Quinn in the psychological thriller, in which Joaquin Phoenix reprises his
role as the titular Joker – Batman’s soon-to-be nemesis. 

Arriving at CIneworld Leicester Square alongside ever-supportive fiancé Michael Polansky, Gaga looked incredible in a custom-made gown from Celine by Hedi Slimane as she greeted fans. 

The incredible structured number featured dramatic shoulder pads
and a plunging neckline which showed off her figure as she posed up a storm. 

Gaga’s fashion parade for the film has been a resounding success at least after
her last big film House of Gucci released in 2021 was savaged by critics.
