Venice, a city long associated with masks
and masquerades, was the perfect place to unveil
Joker five years ago; and last month, at the venerable
film festival there, it was followed by the sequel, Joker:
Folie À Deux.

The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix once more in the title role, this time joined by Lady Gaga as what I
suppose we must call the love interest, although that would undervalue
her wonderful performance.

We’ve known since A Star Is Born in 2018 that she can act, but she really is terrific in a bad-girl role.
They’d have loved her at St Trinian’s.

This film is audaciously different in style from
the original, not as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all the
same.

Arthur is now behind bars, waiting to see whether he will be judged sane enough
to stand trial for murder, and in the meantime enjoying
his celebrity status with fellow prisoners and even the
warders, one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds
him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Which is more real: the psychopath wearing the mask or the vulnerable fellow behind it?
Either way, identity confusion is the theme of this film, which keeps being billed as a musical. 

It’s not, really, although music looms large as an expression of Arthur and Lee’s
burgeoning love for one another. And there are a
couple of swooning dance routines that make them look like psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling and Emma
Stone in La La Land (2016).

Moreover, it is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s 1953 classic The Band
Wagon that Lee, who claims to have been imprisoned for
arson, sets fire to their prison wing.

The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity to escape, yet Phillips
and his co-writer Scott Silver skilfully toy with our expectations throughout; each time we anticipate which way the narrative is going to go,
it confounds us by wheeling off in another direction.

For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this
sequel doesn’t scale those heady heights, it is still a gripping film about mental illness;
not quite comparable with all-time greats such as Psycho (1960) and One
Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), but not
too far off.

– Joker’s Gotham, of course, is a lightly fictionalised version of New York City.

The real thing is the backdrop to A Different Man, another absorbing story, splendidly
written and directed by Aaron Schimberg, about an urban loner struggling with life.

In the case of the troubled, self-conscious Edward (Sebastian Stan), an aspiring actor, that’s apparently because
he has a disfiguring craniofacial condition. Instructional corporate videos seem to be about as far
as he can get in the acting world.

There are obvious echoes of The Elephant Man (1980), and for that matter of recent release The Substance,
in which Demi Moore’s character, a former movie star ‘disfigured’ by a
few wrinkles, finds a way of transforming
into her own younger self.

Here, Edward is told by a doctor that ‘an alternative path has presented itself’.
In other words, medical science has found a way to reverse his condition, turning him
into a perfectly attractive middle-aged man.

But Schimberg’s point, made with great satirical swagger,
is that Edward, despite his radical change in appearance, is still the
same person underneath that he always was.

In his former condition he was befriended by his pretty, charismatic neighbour, Ingrid (Renate Reinsve),
a playwright. Now he is able to fall into bed with her, and to star in a play she has written about their relationship,
little though she knows of his real identity.

I was even reminded of Tootsie (1982) and Mrs Doubtfire (1993) as Edward’s new persona fundamentally fails to alter
who he actually is. This is illuminated by the arrival
of Oswald, an Englishman with the same condition Edward once had,
but popular, witty, confident, and gloriously played by Adam Pearson (who really does suffer from a disfiguring condition called neurofibromatosis).

Pearson is probably best-known for his debut film, Jonathan Glazer’s brilliant Under
The Skin (2013). Which is apt, because this picture, too, is
about what’s under the skin.

The 68th London Film Festival opens next week with the world premiere of Blitz, director Steve
McQueen’s drama set in London as the Luftwaffe’s bombs rain down night
after night.

Saoirse Ronan, for my money one of the most talented actresses of
her generation, plays Rita, an East End mum whose son George (Elliott Heffernan) goes missing.
It sounds intriguing even without the casting of The Jam’s former front man Paul Weller — in his feature film debut — as Rita’s father.

I’m also very much looking forward to another world premiere, Joy, the story
of the three brilliant British medical pioneers
whose work on IVF led to the world’s first
‘test-tube’ baby, Louise Brown, in 1978.

It is directed by Ben Taylor, best-known for his TV work on shows such
as Sex Education and Catastrophe, and stars Bill Nighy, James Norton and Thomasin McKenzie.

I have heard great things about Conclave, the adaptation of
Robert Harris’s novel starring Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci.
A couple of new documentaries catch the eye, too. One of them is made
by actress Sadie Frost, whose directing debut was a film about Mary Quant.
This time she turns to another fashion icon of the 1960s, with a
feature called Twiggy.

And Elton John: Never Too Late promises a ‘uniquely intimate’ look at the
star’s life and career. It’s been made by his long-time partner
David Furnish, so… we’ll see.

Following on from 2019’s psychological thriller from director Todd Phillips, Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as clown Arthur Fleck who has descended into mental illness.

His lawyer (Catherine Keener) strives to show that Joke is accused of five murders, rather than Arthur. Lee just as
urgently wants him to identify as his demonic alter ego. 

In the final scenes, Arthur renounces his Joker alter-ego and is
found guilty of first-degree murder.

As he is being sentenced a car bomb detonates outside the court, with two people helping Arthur escape, but he is
later caught by the police and taken back to Arkham. 

In the Asylum a young patient begins to tell Arthur a joke, before stabbing him in the stomach and while
he bleeds to death, carves a smile into his own face. 

It raises questions surrounding the Joker’s true identity, as it would seem he never
went on to become the famed villain, instead he was just the person who inspired the man who eventually became him.

Gotham people put on him, that he represents. 

‘He’s an unwitting icon. This thing was placed on him, and he

The movie serves as a follow-up to Phoenix’s 2019 box office hit,
which was simply titled Joker.

Australian politicians are almost always opting to fly with Qantas on taxpayer-funded
trips, despite Virgin offering cheaper tickets.

Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per
cent of work trips last year despite it not always
being the cheapest route, according to travel data provided
to the government.

While politicians and their staffers are required to book the
cheapest flight, it also has to be the most efficient, with Qantas offering the most routes
between major cities.

MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips like
ordinary Aussies can, but they can can receive lifetime
status credits, which allows access to airport lounges
and flight upgrades.

‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of
Qantas in securing bookings by parliamentarians and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote
in an opinion piece for the Australian Financial Review.

‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s dime.’

Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight bookings by government officials which will be conducted by
the Department of Finance this year, despite there being just two months left
of 2024.

A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips,
DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’
to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who
took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips

There will be just 24 ‘principal residences’ in the property including lateral apartments, penthouses and townhouses with up to five bedrooms, and five more smaller ‘pieds-à-terre’ apartments.

the dollar, but is headed for its tenth straight weekly loss amid concerns that new tariff threatened by President-elect Donald Trump will heighten strains on the struggling Chinese
economy.

Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as
Trump’s policies are expected to drive up U.S. inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from falling too much.
« We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment, »
Lynn Song, Greater China chief economist at ING, said in a note.

However, « we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies. » The yuan was changing hands at 7.2549 per dollar around midday,
little moved from the previous close.
Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year low of 7.2996 hit on Tuesday,
it is poised to register its longest weekly losing streak since 2018.
The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and « the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building » in the yuan, aided by ongoing attempts by
China’s central bank to restrain its decline, said Alvin Tan, strategist at RBC Capital Markets.

Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic recovery, with manufacturing
activities improving, but property sales in many Chinese cities remaining weak.
China’s « economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature, » said John Browning,
managing director of BANDS Financial.
He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during
next week’s Central Economic Work Conference, as « Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins. » Top policymakers will gather at the conference to agree on major economic goals for next year.

Mr Bandt was challenged on Monday by ABC Radio National stand-in host Steve Cannane that he was ‘enjoying free hospitality from a company that has illegally sacked hundreds of workers’.

Cannane was referring to the Federal Court’s ruling that Qantas illegally sacked 1,
700 workers at the start of the Covid pandemic in a case brought by
Transport Workers Union. 

Commenting on the sacking in June of 2020, Mr Bandt called it a ‘devastating day for thousands of
Qantas workers & their families’ in a Facebook post. ‘We’re
thinking of you,’ he wrote.

Cannane challenged Mr Bandt further saying: ‘You don’t think you
should be a little purer on this and just not take their (Qantas’s) hospitality?’

Mr Bandt said he always made declarations about matters
such as this and argued that the party’s policies
to tax big corporations heavily show the perks were not impacting the Greens.

controversy after it was revealed he frequently opts for business class
and has even taken private jets to election events

Mr Bandt used two private jets during the 2022 federal election campaign, landing tax payers with the $23,000 bill. 

One flight was between Queensland regional centres Townsville
and Rockhampton on March 7 but he also boarded
a $15,000 private plane along the well-travelled Brisbane to Canberra route to
attend his party’s election campaign launch.

Mr Bandt isn’t the only politician in the hot seat with Prime Minister
Anthony Albanese being asked if he has included both
his son and partner as ‘plus one’ Chairman’s Club members.

He is also being asked about free flight upgrades including
an international one he is alleged to have received from Qantas in new book The Chairman’s Lounge
authored by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.

The Greens are licking their electoral wounds after the Queensland state poll, where they are battling to hold onto their two seats
after stating they aimed to triple their representation in parliament.

With 72 per cent of the vote counted they appear to have retained
the Brisbane seat of Maiwar but suffered a 4.6 per cent swing to the ALP.

However, they remain behind South Brisbane,
which has seen a massive 12.4 per cent swing to
Labor with 64 per cent of votes counted.

The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure of Garrett’s remark, Steve Price had to explain what the private enclave actually
was.

In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is a separate frequent flyers lounge
away from the crowded normal Qantas Club. 

‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved by
the Qantas chairman, Margaret Jackson. 

‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’

In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter
Richard Wilkins was also a member of lounge.

Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness to the remark Price said Garrett had made.

Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters, actors and performers,
and well-known writers and sports people are said to be among the lounge’s exclusive membership of around 6000.

Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed was a confidential conversation in a private place,
but which exposed him to criticism over his own membership for allegedly promoting Qantas on his
radio show.

‘Why on earth is Qantas giving a controversial shock jock membership
of its Chairman’s Lounge, which is supposedly to enable our elite politicians and
business leaders some privacy from the hoi polloi?’ demanded Crikey reporter Stephen Mayne at the time.

‘The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about discretion and confidentiality,’
he said, accusing Price of breaking ‘a confidence’.

The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO by Alan Joyce,
Geoff Dixon was the sole gatekeeper of entry into the club’s hushed
confines.

Qantas Chairman’s Lounge membership was ‘so exclusive that you
have to be personally invited by the airline’s chieftain’, Nine newspapers reported in 2008.

‘A marvellous benefit of lounge membership is that the mega rich and powerful avoid having to
mingle with the riffraff who will be travelling cattle class.

‘Having said that, members of the ultra-exclusive club
have included Pauline Hanson.

‘Another lounge member is Brad Cooper, who is currently
enjoying a prolonged exposure to cattle-class in Kirkconnell Correctional Centre.’
(Cooper was the former HIH insurance executive jailed for eight years on fraud and bribery offences).

The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the lounge ‘which most of their spouses got too’ in their pecuniary interests
that year included Liberal MPs of the day, Philip Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.

Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson,
and Martin Ferguson declared a bottle of Grange hermitage as a
gift from Qantas, as did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.

Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s spokesperson  told Nine: ‘We like
to retain a bit of mystery. Membership is by
invitation only and it is reviewed periodically.’

Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the country has
accepted free membership of the controversial, invitation-only lounge with one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’. 

Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the ‘very, very high-end perk’ gives the airline a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.

They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The Chairman’s Lounge
by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston, which has
stirred up the controversy. 

A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both Federal Parliament’s House of Representatives
and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’
membership to the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.

Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest statements. 

At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of his upgrades ‘have
been declared as appropriate. What’s appropriate is transparency.’  

Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all
12 assistant ministers.

Entry to the country’s six opulent VIP clubs are suitably discreet,
but once inside, the designer lounges offer free à

On the Coalition side of parliament, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, deputy leader David Littleproud and former deputy Barnaby Joyce are also among the swathes of
politicians who have disclosed they have taken up free
membership to the contentious club.

Bill Shorten is a member, Tanya Plibersek is still a member
and so is Teal MP, Zali Steggall.

Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities
and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo and some of their deputies are members of the Chairman’s Lounge despite regulating the airline. 

Senior public servants in the club included Department
of Prime Minister and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries Nadine Williams,
Liz Hefren-Webb, Rachel Bacon and ambassador to Beijing, Scott Dewar.

Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous business class flight upgrades,
model Qantas aircrafts, frequent flyer points, and tickets to sporting and
entertainment events. 

Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’, membership to the Chairman’s Lounge is still
veiled in secrecy.

with free à la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent selection of wines and Champagne
and a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.

Virgin Airlines has its own version of the VIP enclave, the
‘Beyond’ lounge. 

Only a handful of federal politicians have relinquished
their membership to the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge in the wake of the furore.

The select few to take a principled stand on the issue include South Australian senator Barbara Pocock and former Wallabies star turned ACT senator David Pocock,
along with MPs Stephen Bates, Queensland Green Elizabeth Watson-Brown, and
Monique Ryan, a Teal from Victoria.

Geoffrey Watson SC, a former counsel assisting the Independent Commission Against Corruption and a
director of the Centre for Public Integrity,
has implored all politicians and policymakers to follow suit.

‘There are certain positions in life where you cannot take Chairman’s Club membership,’ he said.

‘You’re taking public money for the job and you are supposed to represent the
public. Why not sit with them while you’re waiting for a plane?’

Britain will have to cave into EU demands for greater fishing access
and freedom of movement in exchange for closer trading ties, Rachel Reeves was warned yesterday.

During a visit to Brussels, the Chancellor was told
that greater access to UK waters for EU trawlers and a youth mobility scheme will be ‘on the table’ in future
talks.

It came ahead of a summit with EU finance ministers, making Ms Reeves the
first British Chancellor to attend such a meeting since the
UK left the bloc almost five years ago.

Her attendance was designed to be a statement of intent, with the Chancellor among
a group of Cabinet Ministers pushing the hardest
for a ‘reset’ in relations with the bloc.

She told them that ‘breaking down barriers to
trade’ would be a key goal in future talks to boost
economic growth on both sides of the Channel.

In a speech to them, she added: ‘In the long-run, Brexit is expected to cause UK trade intensity
to fall by 15 per cent.

‘And with goods exports between both the UK and EU continuing to remain below 2018
levels, this is impacting UK and EU economies alike.

he added: ‘Well, that’s an important element from
the EU side we want to put on the table.

‘And that’s one of the areas where I think there is greater value added, also for the UK, to engage constructively.’

UK ministers fear a youth mobility scheme, which would allow young people from across the EU to live and work in Britain for a set period, would be seen as Labour bringing back a form of free movement.

But Ms Reeves appeared to leave the door open for striking a pact, saying in a post-summit
press conference that ministers were only ruling out a return to
‘freedom of movement of labour’.

It suggests the Government is open to a return to other forms of
freedom of movement. Labour’s election manifesto was not so explicit, simply ruling out a return ‘freedom of movement’.

Ms Reeves reiterated the Government’s position that Britain won’t rejoin the EU’s single market or customs union.

But she refused to spell out her red lines for
closer trading ties, insisting that yesterday’s meeting
was ‘not about starting a negotiation’ or ‘laying
down a set of demands’.

It was about ‘preliminary work to rebuild trust and rebuild relationships’ and ‘draw a line’ under the ‘fractious and
antagonistic’ Brexit years, she said in the post-summit press conference.

More detailed talks will begin next year, she added.

Privately, EU diplomats complain that UK ministers have been coy with them about exactly what they are seeking.

Joker: Folie À Deux director Todd Phillips ‘wanted nothing
to do with DC’ during making of the $200million flop film,
a new report has claimed.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film
– stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga and was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures – but was slammed by critics and failed to ignite at the box office.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with Phillips’ process telling
Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James
Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last
month.

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck,
mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a
DC Studios logo.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and
a critic score of 32%

the Joker sequel. while Phillips declined to comment
to the publication. 

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips,
DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with
DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control
of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for
the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter:
‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips  shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price
point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per
cent less.

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining
static.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the
studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the film to Venice.

Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history as
the film bombed at the box office on opening night. 

It has only made $114million worldwide against its $200million budget. 

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized
as ‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday, October
4, but it only raked in $20 million at the domestic box office, per The Hollywood Reporter. 

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him
an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the
role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn). 

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for a
comic book movie. 

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters
earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a C+.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a critic score of 32%. 

The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at the
domestic box office during the entirety of opening weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter. 

Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around
$70 million – but the number has since drastically dropped. 

Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film
first released in theaters – and eventually landed a little over
$1 billion in the global box office. 

The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips –
had a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget increased for Folie À Deux to
around $200 million. 

The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both critics and
audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the 76th Venice International Film Festival. 

Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker (Arthur Fleck)
– and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original
Score. 

The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film
Festival last month in September, where it earned a 12-minute
standing ovation, per Deadline.

A social media user wrote, ‘Stop making sequels as musicals if the original wasn’t a musical.’ 

‘Maybe he [Phillips] only had an hour long movie, and decided to randomly add musical scenes to fill the runtime,’ one penned.

DC Universe was these two films.’ 

Ahead of the movie’s release, Lady Gaga also dropped an accompanying album titled Harlequin on September 27.

Most critics have said Todd failed to use Gaga correctly in the movie and claimed
she was only bought in for the musical aspect of it.

While the majority of critics say Joker: Folie À Deux didn’t live
up to expectations, others have dubbed the movie ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant.’ 

Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but said
it lacked any thrill. 

The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is best remembered as one of the most subversive and original films of the last decade, while its
hugely anticipated sequel is just as bleak and formally daring as its
predecessor’.

Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.

Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to have no idea what to do
with her. 

Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw
claimed the movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

as they have claimed that Gaga is running
