À la naissance, pour tous les bébés, c’est la même chose : les premières selles arrivent dans les deux ou trois premiers jours. Elles sont très sombres (noires), un peu verdâtres, moussantes et très gluantes. Ces selles dites « méconiales » (ou méconium) résultent de la digestion du liquide amniotique nourricier que bébé a ingéré dans l’utérus : elles indiquent que son transit fonctionne bien.
Les selles d’un bébé nourri au biberon seront plus pâteuses, plus épaisses et plus odorantes, et leur couleur plutôt verte ou marron clair.
La couleur marron foncé n’apparaîtra que quand bébé aura commencé à manger solide.
Selles décolorées ? Attention !
« Les selles d’un nourrisson sont TOUJOURS de couleurs vives (jaune d’or, vert ou ocre bronze) » rappelle l’AMFE, association Maladies Foie Enfants qui regroupe les parents d’enfants atteints de cholestase néonatale. Cette maladie rare qui nécessite une intervention chirurgicale précoce pour éviter des dommages irréversibles au foie, se dépiste justement grâce à la couleur des selles. Si les selles de bébé sont jaune pâle, beiges, blanches ou grises, c’est un signal d’alerte qui doit vous inciter à consulter votre médecin. « Soyez très attentif, surtout si vous allaitez. Les urines foncées qui accompagnent la maladie peuvent colorer artificiellement les selles en jaune » précise Laure Dorey, déléguée générale de l’AMFE, qui rappelle que les urines de bébé doivent être transparentes. Au moindre doute, consultez et pensez à apporter la couche à votre médecin !
À savoir : Autour du quinzième jour, le suivi médical du nourrisson prévoit désormais de vérifier que la couleur des selles est normale. Une carte colorimétrique est même imprimée à la page 11 du carnet de santé depuis 2018. Malheureusement, cette carte est totalement erronée. Fiez-vous plutôt à la carte colorimétrique de l’AMFE : l’association l’a d’ailleurs déjà envoyée à toutes les PMI et continue de perfectionner une application pour smartphone afin de faciliter le dépistage.
