Agé de 74 ans et domicilié à Saint-Louis, précisément au Quai Roume, non loin du lieu où accoste le Bateau de croisière Bou El Mogdad, Cheikh Ahmeth Tidiane Sarr est un citoyen modèle qui a beaucoup œuvré pour le rayonnement de sa ville.
Ici, l’environnementaliste ne passe pas inaperçu, du fait de tout son engagement et son militantisme manifeste. En effet, le «naturophile» est considéré comme étant un citoyen modèle, un bénévole qui milite pour la protection de la nature.
«Mon projet vise à rendre toutes les berges de la ville propres, attractives, agréables et accueillantes».
Après de brillantes études primaires, secondaires et universitaires, cet intellectuel titulaire d’une Maîtrise en Sciences Politiques obtenue à l’Université d’Alger en 1979, d’une Maîtrise en Droit Public décrochée à l’Université Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD) de Dakar en 1983, a réussi la prouesse de nettoyer et de reboiser, pendant des années, la berge du grand bras du Fleuve Sénégal.
Dès son retour au bercail (Saint-Louis), il s’est rendu compte de l’état d’insalubrité dans lequel se trouvait la berge d’en face de son domicile.
En effet, des tas d’ordures ménagères, de déchets plastiques et solides, de carcasses d’animaux et autres immondices jonchaient le sol, allant jusqu’à dégager une odeur nauséabonde. Ainsi, le spectacle qui s’offrait à sa vue dans son environnement immédiat, était désolant, poignant, au point de le déranger et de lui ronger le cœur.
Ne pouvant plus supporter cette insalubrité, il commença par ramasser ces ordures avec sa main pour les mettre dans des poubelles.
Cependant, ses parents, les membres de sa famille, les voisins, les amis, les sympathisants, les passants, entre autres, étaient foncièrement contre son initiative. On lui faisait partout des remontrances, pour qu’il cesse de nettoyer la berge. Mais cela était peine perdue, vue le dévouement de l’homme et son amour pour la nature.
Aujourd’hui, il a réussi à faire de cette berge d’en face de son domicile, un endroit paradisiaque.
Si certains lui disaient que cette tâche n’est pas de son ressort, d’autres le grondaient, le rudoyaient, pour lui rappeler qu’il appartient à une grande famille honorable et qu’il n’avait pas besoin de s’intéresser à l’entretien de cette berge. «Les gens me traitaient de tous les noms d’oiseau.
Mais cela me poussait, au contraire, à persévérer dans mes actions bénévoles de protection de la nature, de la préservation et de la sauvegarde de l’environnement», a-t-il fait savoir.
Il tenait à tout prix à faire de cette berge du fleuve «un endroit paradisiaque, de sorte que les populations, les touristes et autres visiteurs, puissent jouir pleinement d’un cadre de vie idéal, où on pourrait passer des moments agréables, en humant de l’air frais.
C’est ce que j’ai réussi aujourd’hui, après avoir consenti des sacrifices».
Cet amoureux de la nature est souvent aux anges, lorsqu’il se rend compte que des centaines de touristes éprouvent du plaisir à se promener sur la berge, à s’asseoir sur ses bancs publics installés par l’écrivaine Mme Sokhna Benga.
«Je suis également soulagé lorsque de braves femmes squattent la berge propre et bien nettoyée, pour y développer leurs petits commerces, en y vendant des sandwichs, des beignets et autres friandises, lorsque de nombreux concitoyens mettent à profit le week-end pour venir communier dans la joie et l’allégresse sur la berge ; ce beau spectacle m’apporte un baume au cœur».
Il est resté néanmoins profondément marqué par la visite inopinée du maire de la ville tricentenaire, Mansour Faye, qui est venu constater de visu ce qu’il a pu réaliser sur la berge.
«Il m’a encouragé, remercié vivement, au nom des populations, avant de me remettre une enveloppe financière pour m’aider à acheter du petit matériel. Ensuite, il a fait en sorte que je perçoive, tous les mois, un pécule d’appui à mes initiatives, au niveau de la municipalité».
