À la tête des Lionceaux de la Teranga depuis 2021, Serigne Saliou Dia s’apprête à disputer la deuxième compétition majeure avec les Lionceaux U-17. Champion d’Afrique avec ses poulains en mai dernier, l’ancien formateur de l’Académie ASPIRE, s’est entretenu avec la FIFA en prélude de la Coupe du monde U-17 qui se tiendra du 10 novembre au 2 décembre, en Indonésie.
Une quête impulsive par l’homme qui a su s’entourer des meilleurs éléments du pays : Serigne Diouf, Mamadou Lamine Sadio ou encore Amara Diouf. Une brillante génération de Lionceaux dotée d’un appétit de loup qui s’attaque à un nouveau défi : celui de la Coupe du Monde U-17 de la FIFA, Indonésie 2023 où le Sénégal est dans le Groupe D avec le Japon, l’Argentine et la Pologne. Conscient du talent de ses protégés, Serigne Saliou Dia veut marquer de son empreinte cette compétition qu’il affectionne tant.
Quelles sont vos impressions sur le Groupe D dans lequel figure le Sénégal avec le Japon, la Pologne et l’Argentine ?
C’est un groupe très relevé. En passant au crible chacune de ces sélections, nous constatons que l’Argentine a atteint la demi-finale de la compétition à plusieurs reprises. Nous allons donc affronter un habitué du tournoi. De notre côté, nous avons une histoire assez récente avec la Coupe du Monde U-17. Grâce à ce genre de tournoi, nous allons gagner en expérience. Une expérience qui sera précieuse pour les joueurs quand ils seront chez les U-20, les U-23 et les seniors. Nous voulons que nos jeunes y poursuivent leur apprentissage du football.
Quelles sont les ambitions du Sénégal pour sa deuxième Coupe du Monde U-17 de la FIFA™ ?
Nous sommes conscients que nous avons une carte à jouer. Tout d’abord, il va falloir rester concentré, bien gérer les matchs de la phase de groupes puis se qualifier pour les rencontres à élimination directe. Nous allons prendre les matchs les uns après les autres. Dans notre esprit, nous allons aborder chaque rencontre comme une finale, et faire mieux qu’en 2019 où le Sénégal avait atteint les huitièmes de finale.
On vous a connu à l’Aspire où vous avez été l’un des formateurs du club. Qu’inculquez-vous à ces jeunes footballeurs de la sélection U-17 ?
Ce sont des footballeurs qui ont vraiment envie d’apprendre et de réussir, ce qui nous facilite le travail. On essaie de tirer le maximum d’eux. Notre but est de les rendre les plus professionnels possibles, sur le terrain ou en dehors. Je suis très exigeant et ambitieux avec eux, car je crois en eux. Et je prends également du plaisir à les aider à grandir et à les voir évoluer en tant que footballeur.
Le capitaine de votre sélection, Amara Diouf, a honoré sa première cape avec les seniors à 15 ans, en septembre dernier. Comment jugez-vous son entrée face au Rwanda ?
J’étais très heureux. Il est dans une excellente dynamique et il veut marquer l’histoire du football sénégalais. Il a coché plusieurs cases : meilleur buteur lors de la Coupe d’Afrique des Nations U-17 de la CAF, plus jeune joueur à avoir porté la tunique des Lions de la Teranga.
Son entrée lors de ce match a été très positive, il a même failli marquer un but. Sur le plan national et continental, Amara montre que la valeur n’attend pas le nombre des années. J’espère que ses performances vont motiver les millions de jeunes sénégalais qui sont aussi talentueux que lui et qui veulent intégrer l’équipe nationale.

On n’a aucune pression particulière. En tant que tacticien, ce statut n’est pas lourd à porter. Au contraire, c’est un rêve d’arriver à la Coupe du Monde en étant champion d’Afrique. Je pense que lorsque vous avez l’opportunité de participer à cette compétition, l’essentiel est de prendre du plaisir et de progresser. Donc, on ne se met aucune pression, cela n’est pas dans notre caractère.
Nous avons juste pour objectif de défendre fièrement les couleurs de notre cher pays. Le Sénégal n’est plus à présenter en termes de performances footballistiques. En tant qu’ambassadeurs de cette nation, nous devons répondre aux valeurs de notre sélection et ce sans pression.
Que représente cette Coupe du Monde U-17 à vos yeux ?
Nous allons construire des moments inoubliables qui seront gravés à jamais dans la mémoire des garçons et dans la mienne. On va gagner en expérience, ce qui nous servira pour la suite de nos carrières respectives. Cette édition 2023 est importante pour nous en tant qu’acteurs mais elle l’est également pour le peuple sénégalais qui s’est pris d’affection pour cette génération U-17.
