Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive amounts
of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and
radio. 

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what
was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story of
how Qantas sold us out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls
for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia
his book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights
by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime Minister has
categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr
Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los
Angeles and Honolulu. 

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the
messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot. 

He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and
said he was hiding his employment history. 

‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s
a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said. 

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers to him
as the then-Qantas corporate communications
senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP
Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat
of Cook before Scott Morrison. 

‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the first line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday
night, just before his book launch. 

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was still
‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime
Minister made. 

‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it,
the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he said.

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who is a
former Australian Financial Review columnist,
wonders if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.

‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which is, did you
ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you were the Transport Minister?
The answer is « yes » and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying it.’

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should
refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.

Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of
a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people are struggling to pay their mortgage or
rent, the latest blow to his credibility has led to calls for him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though. 

‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get this far.
I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone
who reads the book will learn that this book is not
a hit job on Anthony Albanese. This book is about Qantas. 

‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor,
Liberal, National, you name it. They’ve been doing it for more
than a generation.

‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia.
I’m not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about and it never was.’

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations
being had across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese. 

‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the freebie mindset
of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long
time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve
seen. 

‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis. 

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years
and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).

‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of the
International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.

‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it
looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the claims in the book are)
just another example of that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise
for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the
airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded. 

The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he
had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.

‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted and you are
guaranteed. You’re not going to the airport crossing
your fingers going « Geez, I hope there is a spare seat ».

‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat
and the only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO.
No other executive can do that.

‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades
(for Anthony Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during
his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there. 

‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.

‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got
chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …

‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying
around in the front of the plane on personal travel. 

‘A normal person would say « Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events. 

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

Lady Gaga is set to release her seventh studio album
in February.

Despite lead single Disease stalling on the Hot 100 at No.
27, the 38-year-old is forging ahead with her next album, which she described as both ‘fun’ and ‘darker.’

Speaking to Vogue magazine about the project, Gaga said that
she’s been focused on the production side of her new songs. 

‘I love producing — I always have — and something that was really important to me making my seventh studio album was blending live instrumentation with
programming,’ she explained.

‘The album is chaotic from a genre perspective — it
is genre-bending, and I think in that way is a deeply
personal look into my mind as a producer and the way I think about music.’

She also said that the album has a ‘darker pop’ sound that’s more in line with her iconic 2009 album, The Fame Monster.

‘The album is not extremely serious in that it’s very fun and meant to be enjoyed at a party, in a club, or

although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were certainly both members during their terms as PM. 

But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time Chairman’s Lounge member – revealed a politically charged remark
made within the club’s hallowed walls, the cat was out of the bag.

The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned senator Peter
Garrett that Labor would change the policies it campaigned on if it won government –
did not deter his party from romping in on election day.

In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that
of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring down the prime minister.

Broadcaster Steve Price revealed he had been a Chairman’s Lounge member since

Steve Price had to explain what the private enclave actually was.

In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is a separate frequent flyers lounge away from the crowded normal Qantas Club. 

‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved by the Qantas chairman, Margaret Jackson. 

‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’

In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins was also a
member of lounge.

Wilkins had also been inside at the time and
was his only witness to the remark Price said Garrett had made.

Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters, actors and
performers, and well-known writers and sports people are said to be
among the lounge’s exclusive membership of around 6000.

Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed
was a confidential conversation in a private place, but which exposed him to criticism over his own membership for allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio
show.

The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the lounge ‘which most of their spouses got too’ in their pecuniary interests that year included
Liberal MPs of the day, Philip Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.

Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a bottle of Grange hermitage as a gift from Qantas,
as did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.

Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s spokesperson  told
Nine: ‘We like to retain a bit of mystery. Membership is by
invitation only and it is reviewed periodically.’

Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the country has
accepted free membership of the controversial, invitation-only lounge with one even describing
it as an ‘entitlement’. 

Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the ‘very, very high-end perk’
gives the airline a disproportionate level of influence over
the country’s politicians.

They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial
Review columnist Joe Aston, which has stirred up the controversy. 

A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both Federal Parliament’s House of Representatives and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.

Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest
statements. 

At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of his upgrades ‘have been declared as appropriate.
What’s appropriate is transparency.’

Hamas’ leader Yahya Sinwar could have given an order to execute
all the hostages who remain in Gaza if he died, a top Israeli negotiator has claimed. 

Sinwar died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered him by chance, sending a drone to kill
the terror leader. 

Gershon Baskin, the Israeli negotiator who oversaw
Sinwar’s 2011 release from an Israeli prison, along with 1,026 Palestinian prisoners, in exchange
for the return of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shilat, said that his death was a ‘moment of either opportunity or a moment of doom.’

‘A moment of doom because there are rumours that Sinwar instructed people holding
hostages that, should he be killed, they should kill their hostages,’ he told the
Telegraph. 

At the time of Sinwar’s death, just over 100
hostages remained in Gaza, with 60 thought to still be
alive. 

Those who remain alive are at risk of never being returned to their families, according
Haaretz, which reported on Sunday that top US officials, including Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, have
assessed there is a slim chance of a deal being brokered, given the tensions between Israel and Hamas.

He cited the horrific killing of six hostages in tunnels under
Rafah in late August. 

Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said the six were ‘cruelly murdered by
Hamas just a short time before we got to them.’

The six dead hostages were identified as Eden Yerushalmi, 24, Carmel Gat,
39, Almog Sarusi, 26, Alex Lubnov, 26, Ori Danino, 25, and Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23.  

Five of those who were recovered had been attending the Nova music festival when Hamas terrorists began slaughtering festivalgoers, while taking others
hostage. Gat was at her family kibbutz when she was captured.

lowest score for a comic book movie. 

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters
earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds the higher score of C+.

Joker notably opened with $96.2 million on its theater release in 2019 and eventually took
a little over $1 billion in the global box office. 

The first movie – which was also directed by Phillips – had
a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget more than doubled to
around $200 million for Folie À Deux. 

The sequel screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month, where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.   

It had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but the number drastically dropped amid mixed
reviews before release. 

Audiences have since shared their opinions on the sequel,
which features multiple musical sequences. 

‘Joaquin Phoenix don’t deserve this,’ wrote one on X.

It is not clear when Apollonia’s relationship with Prince began or ended as he was dating another one

Anthony Albanese has tried to claim his relationship with Alan Joyce was a strictly
professional one between a Prime Minister and a corporate
titan, as he battles claims the Qantas boss was his ‘personal travel agent’ for free flights and upgrades.

However that characterization of the relationship was at odds with that made by
Mr Joyce, who said he was ‘good mates’ with Mr
Albanese and had been ‘for years’.

In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime
Minister had Mr Joyce arrange free tickets and
upgrades, Mr Albanese distanced himself from the Qantas chief.

When asked about about their relationship on Sunday Mr
Albanese implied it was purely in a professional capacity, having been Transport Minister and shadow transport spokesperson before becoming
Prime Minister. 

‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline …
I had the same relationship with him that I have with John Borghetti as the CEO of Virgin,’ Mr Albanese
said.

That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce apparently
greatly enjoying each other’s company. 

Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high spirits on the red
carpet at the Qantas 100th Gala Dinner in March last year.

In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the red carpet with
one arm around the prime minister and the other around Mr Albanese’s partner,
Jodie Haydon.

Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr Albanese attended Qantas’s
unveiling of it’s special ‘Yes 23’ emblazoned airplanes
for the Voice referendum.

launch of the Qantas’ landmark Perth to London flight in March, 2018. 

During a Senate hearing in September 2023, Mr Joyce said he had been ‘friends for years’ with Mr Albanese.

Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a membership to the prestigious and exclusive Chairman’s Lounge Mr Joyce refused to confirm or deny but talked up his relationship with
the Prime Minister.

‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,’ Mr
Joyce said. 

However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he lobbied the Prime Minister on the
controversial decision to lock competitor Qatar Airways out of domestic routes.

It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s Lounge, by
former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston that Ms Haydon is also a
Chairman’s Lounge member.

Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy from Qantas and he
would liaise personally with the former airline boss for them. 

Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted
Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs to ask
for special upgrades for himself or his family.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately
funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los
Angeles and Honolulu, with some being for holidays.

Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was
for work purposes and all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.    

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations describing Mr
Albanese as being the ‘best friend’ of Mr Joyce. 

Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had directly contacted
Mr Joyce to request upgrades while holding a regulatory
position in the transport sector.

‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up the phone to one of
the most important stakeholders in the portfolio
asking for a free upgrade, then again, I think the
Prime Minister would be able to answer those questions more effectively than anyone else because I’m not aware of anyone else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.

It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of the Qantas Chairman’s
Lounge

The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce for upgrades
on Tuesday at press conference in the NSW city of Newcastle.

‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were
not discussed through calls – we discussed the first flight from Australia to Dubai on the
A380,’ he said.

‘I’ve declared everything in accordance
with all of the rules.’

Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer Sarah Ferguson about how confident he was that Mr Albanese had made
calls personally to Mr Joyce for upgrades.

‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.

Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s lobbying to block
UAE airline Qatar domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to think that the Prime Minister’s office had nothing to do with the decision.

‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity in the Albanese government that would

been sailing through with Transport Minister Catherine King speaking warmly about the proposal until ‘everything changed’ to stop it dead in tracks. 

 Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block Qatar was due to Qantas lobbying her or any Labor colleagues.

Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade
received from Qantas the Australian Financial Review reported on Tuesday that he failed to do for his former wife Carmel Tebbutt
when the two traveled together.

‘This is all a question of integrity. Most Australians struggle to afford even an economy airfare.

They’d never be able to afford the luxury of business class.
It’s out of our reach,’ she said.

‘Can Albanese truly be impartial when it comes to making decisions about Qantas when he’s been getting tens of
thousands of dollars worth of free upgrades to business class?
The revelations puts the decision he made as transport minister and prime minister under a cloud.

‘Aside from the integrity issues, this revelation is also politically lethal.
Albanese took care to curate a self-image of a housing commission boy who made it.
But now the perception is cementing of a long-term pollie enjoying the perks of public office.’

Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s  apparent close relationship with Mr Joyce is that the Labor leader
in a trade unionist advocate while Qantas attempted to
break the power of the Transport Workers Union by sacking 1700 staff during Covid. 

The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal Court in a case brought by the union with Qantas facing
possible hundreds of thousands in compensation payouts. 

The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender in semi-retired
3AW radio star Neil Mitchell. 

‘Quick test: upgrade Albo is a bad look,’ Mitchell wrote on X.

‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised by having Alan Joyce as a bestie?
Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’

red-faced after a shocking stunt in which he was tricked into reading about her threesome live
on-air.

The awkward family exchange occurred on Tuesday’s Kyle and
Jackie O Show when the radio queen and co-host Kyle Sandilands were discussing Jackie’s new memoir The Whole Truth.

Before getting her father on the line, Jackie explained to listeners that she was about to get an unsuspecting Tony to read
an excerpt that detailed a night of passion with then boyfriend ‘Ugly’ Phil O’Neil and a 19-year-old stripper.

‘So this is going back to my Gold Coast days when I
had met Phil who [later became] my first husband,’ the

I’d be so excited.

‘I’ve been round the block a few times.
I understand how these things happen.’

Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male flatmate and Jackie’s mother Julie. 

‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the door, she put her face to the screen to see inside and that flatmate was right there in the living room, pants down, w***ing,’ a shocked Tony
read.

The revelations come after Jackie spoke for
the first time about her years-long battle with drugs which saw her secretly go to rehab at The Betty Ford Clinic in November in 2022.

During a tearful on-air admission, Jackie said at the height of her

Lady Gaga is set to release her seventh studio album in February.

Despite lead single Disease stalling on the Hot 100 at No.
27, the 38-year-old is forging ahead with her next album, which she described as both
‘fun’ and ‘darker.’

Speaking to Vogue magazine about the project, Gaga
said that she’s been focused on the production side of her new songs. 

‘I love producing — I always have — and something that was really important to
me making my seventh studio album was blending live instrumentation with programming,’ she explained.

‘The album is chaotic from a genre perspective — it is genre-bending, and I think
in that way is a deeply personal look into my mind as a producer and the way I think about music.’

She also said that the album has a ‘darker pop’ sound that’s more in line with her iconic 2009 album,
The Fame Monster. 

However, fans need not be worried that Gaga is going too somber with her sound. 

‘The album is not extremely serious in that it’s very fun and meant to be enjoyed at a party,
in a club, or at home having personal fun time — to be free of your worries at home or walking through life,’ she insisted.

Gaga released the album’s lead single Disease last month to rave reviews
from music critics, who lauded it as a return to the star’s roots.

On the bright side, Gaga is currently enjoying

Bright and early, my old friend, the beauty and wellness entrepreneur
Liz Earle, is standing at my door clutching a Kilner jar with what
looks like a small sponge floating in murky water.

‘I made kombucha for you,’ she says with an enthusiasm I
don’t entirely share.

(The sponge, it turns out, is the Scoby, or ‘symbiotic
culture of bacteria and yeast’, which is what’s used to ferment sweetened tea to make kombucha.
I don’t realise at the time, but this hideous thing takes weeks
to develop and is in fact a very generous gift.)

The truth is, I’d drink (almost) anything if it gave me Liz’s zip.
At 61, a mother of five and a new grandmother, she honestly
looks 20 years younger. Fans of her YouTube channel and her 170,000 Instagram followers will know how
bright and smooth her skin is, but in person she is fizzing with energy,
too.

Liz and I have been friends for 25 years – over which time
she has somehow seemed to gain in vitality as I, nine years her
junior, have… well, deflated.

So here’s my plan. I am going to Live Like Liz for a full eight weeks, morning to night, to see just how much I,
too, can turn back the clock.

I am going to eat, drink and exercise like Liz, ‘ground myself’
in a flower bed in my pyjamas like her, and even tape up my
mouth à la Liz. From my gut to my hormones, my brain to the very cells of my skin, I will follow
the ‘bio-hacks’ set out in her new book A Better
Second Half: Dial Back Your Age To Live A Longer, Healthier, Happier Life, which swiftly became a bestseller on its release this year.

Liz says it can’t fail, so long as I commit to it.

‘Who’s to say we can’t or shouldn’t change
the way we age?’ she asks.

‘I was stronger, fitter and more capable in my 50s than I was in my 40s,
so why can’t I be even more so in my 60s, 70s and
beyond?’

Perhaps more significantly, after the ‘car crash of emotional
wreckage’ caused by the breakdown of her second marriage, and
the divorce she went through in 2020, she now says: ‘I’m happier at 61 than I was at 40.’

Career-wise, it shows. When we met back in the 1990s we were both beauty journalists.
At launches for new products, I’d merrily down the free Krug while Liz
sipped sparkling water. ‘Ah Bea, you were the yin to my
yang,’ she says.

Now, her wellness empire has mushroomed… and I’m suffering major work anxiety, a not-unrelated financial
crisis and severe sciatica.

Frankly, I look and feel knackered. My skin is dull and I have dark
circles under my eyes. Physical pain interferes with my sleep, and I’ve been turning rather too readily to the sauvignon blanc to help me nod off.

Food is not a priority: I’m either not interested or craving sugar, which means I’m a good 10lb heavier than I should be.

So, can living like my rather fabulous friend make me feel as young as she looks?
More to the point – can I really stick to it, kombucha and all?

cheese, taramasalata and thick Greek yoghurt.

High protein helps us ‘shift to a leaner, more toned shape, and lose that middle-aged spread,
‘ she says.

Timing matters. Liz eats two meals a day – brunch around 11am and dinner at 7pm.
The order matters too: clear your plate of chicken before rice, because eating protein before carbs keeps blood sugar levels
stable.

In recent years she has increased her coffee intake (before
2pm) because studies show four to five cups is ‘strongly associated with living longer’ thanks to the bioactives in coffee
beans such as chlorogenic acid.

She eats wheatgerm, soya beans and nuts to up her intake of spermidine – a dietary molecule
that interacts with our DNA and mimics an anti-ageing process called autophagy, which
de-ages us at a cellular level.

Alcohol is basically a no-no. Liz has the ‘occasional glass’ of wine
or tequila, but never more than two and never alone.

I chuck out the ready meals and plonk, roll up my
sleeves and start cooking from scratch. I grill venison, roast a chicken and make soups with the leftovers.

Eating at specific times works for me – I’m never very hungry first thing – and enjoying the protein part of
each meal first means I’m fuller and find it easy to cut back on my carb portions.

Gut health is a big focus, which means more fermented foods.
Much to my surprise, I love the kombucha and soon start to
brew my own using Liz’s Scoby. But homemade kimchi – fermented
veg – is a harder sell. When a lunch guest asks me why I’m forcing myself
to eat something I dislike so much, I reply solemnly:
‘Liz told me to.’

Week two: I discover I can do only 3
press-ups
I really need help with exercise because sciatica means my normal routine has
gone to pot.

Thankfully, Liz reckons just ten minutes a day of exercises such as squats, lunges
and press-ups is more valuable in the long term than a high-intensity gym session once
a week or a long park run.

She introduces me to her personal trainer, Michael Garry, who delivers the
(bombshell, but welcome) news that running any
distance over 5k can ‘start to have negative effects’ on our immune system and bone strength.
If you’re a runner, make it harder by speeding up your time, not increasing your distance.

At Michael’s insistence, I consult a physio about my sciatica, and then he devises
a daily regime for me. I try press-ups and make it to three.
Mortifying. Perseverance is clearly key. As are weights, especially in your
50s. ‘The more muscle you have, the more your bones are protected from
osteoporosis, especially during midlife,’ says
Michael.

For cardio, says Beatrice, I keep swimming twice a week.

But instead of plodding up and down the pool, I start to compete with myself, speeding up the laps

For my slack and flabby upper arms, he advises shoulder presses
and hammer curls, with 3kg weights in both hands. I try tricep dips off a chair,
and quickly find I can increase my reps – until by week four I’m doing two sets of 15.

I work out three times a week at home. At first the routine
takes 40 minutes but the more I do, the faster I do it, until the whole thing – stretching, press-ups, weights – takes just 20 minutes.

For cardio, I keep swimming twice a week. But instead of plodding up and down the pool, I start to compete with
myself, speeding up the laps.

Week three: I slow the hormonal roller coaster
I’m menopausal and already on HRT, but I know I could improve how I feel, which is sluggish
and foggy.

Liz introduces me to something called the ‘estrobolome’ – the
specific collection of bacteria in the gut that influences how
our body uses oestrogen. Put simply, some microbes improve the
efficiency with which oestrogen reaches tissues around the body, meaning we use our dwindling supplies more effectively.

The best way to support your estrobolome is by eating fibre from veg, seeds and
nuts, plus some of the low-sugar fruits such as apples, berries and plums.
Back to the supermarket I go.

To boost the happy hormone serotonin, my saintly mentor insists I
finish my morning shower with a minimum 60-second blast of icy cold water, resulting – she claims – in a ‘post-shock high’ and ‘genuine glow’.

Hmmm. I find it hard to relinquish the comfort of a hot
shower and feel not happy but mutinous as I step out of the bathroom shivering.

Week four: I stand in the flower bed
Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning
and standing barefoot on the grass. ‘Grounding’ apparently enables electrons from
the surface of the Earth to transmit deep into the body,
‘where they have an anti-inflammatory effect’.

Liz tells me she does this in the tranquil grounds of her glorious pile in the West Country.
I do it in a flower bed in my shared patio, still in my pyjamas,
and feel, well, very self-conscious. Later I graduate
to the park, and – look away now – tread in dog mess,
which does not improve my emotional wellbeing.

She also encourages us to keep a Five Minute Gratitude Journal twice
a day. ‘Gratitude is… a superpower that improves longevity and supports the immune system,’ she says.

I can’t help but think my better-off mate has rather a lot
more to smile about than me but, following instructions,
I write down three things I am grateful for every morning,
and every night a short list of ‘good things’ that happened that day, plus another
(longer) list of ‘things that are concerning me’.

My scepticism around gratitude slowly lifts as I find it does make me realise what’s important and what’s not.
It helps me see that things are a lot brighter
than I thought. Packing in a rush for a weekend away, I can’t
find my journal and am surprised by how bereft I feel without it.

Week five: I start to sleep well
I’m a night owl – I stay up too late watching TV and end up hitting my
snooze button past 8.30am… and occasionally edging towards 10am.

Liz reckons anyone can improve their sleep if they follow her routine, which means setting an evening alarm for 9pm – to remind yourself to start ‘winding down for bed’.

Emails, social media and TV are switched off,
replaced by a printed book or a podcast. She takes 120g of magnesium glycinate in a milky drink half an hour before bed (and stops
eating two hours before).

Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning 

Liz wears a bamboo fibre nightie or pyjamas to keep warm because
she sleeps with an open window, which she covers with blackout blinds and
curtains, and sprinkles her pillow with a few drops of neat lavender essential oil.

I’m an e-book reader, so already failing at this routine.
Still, I leave my phone charging in the kitchen and buy
a regular alarm clock. The lavender oil makes me sneeze, so I spray
my pillows with C. Atherley Geranium Spray instead. 

Oh, and I tape my lips up – Liz shows me how when she delivers the
kombucha. Forcing yourself to breathe through your nose is said to promote more restful sleep.

All of this is time-consuming and takes practise, but I find the ritual
soothing. Five weeks in, I’m getting to sleep earlier than I have for years –
at 10.30pm after 20 minutes drop-off time -and waking at 7.30am.
How virtuous!

Week six: I crash off the wagon
I’m doing my best, but then I go for lunch with a friend who chirpily suggests
a glass of wine, which turns into a bottle.
And then a second. Later, with a daytime hangover, I head
to M&S and find reduced dauphinoise potatoes, which become dinner. 

Liz has got me on a blood sugar tracker called Lingo (£289 for
two months – you jab a biosensor the size and shape of a plastic bottle top into
your upper arm, and then link it to an app on your phone), which shows
a massive post-potato spike and then a huge slump, which
makes me tired and irritable. Who knew that such deliciousness
had such a high glycaemic load?

I call Liz to ‘fess up. ‘I have the odd day when I lie in, eat too much
cake and drink too much tequila,’ she says. ‘But that’s fine because
you then know what to do to put it right. It’s not about
being perfect.’ Phew!

Week seven: I tackle my financial mess
Re-reading my journal really helps here. By documenting what
I was so worried about day by day, my perspective on it
changes.

Here, in black and white, is a record of how I felt
at the start of this project and how I’ve evolved.

I’ve come unstuck – in a good way. I’m not going to pretend it’s been easy because
change is uncomfortable, but I realise there’s simply
nothing to be gained from the worry spiral.

If freelance life is tough, and my income erratic, I’m going to do something about it.
Buoyed with the confidence that comes with action, I apply for part-time admin jobs.
As personal trainer Michael observes as we work out on Zoom, I
wouldn’t have done this before. He’s right. Finally I’ve started to take control.

Week eight: And the winner is…
So how have eight weeks of Living Like Liz changed me?

Physically, I’m in much better shape. I’ve lost 7 lb and taken an extraordinary 5 in off my waist
and 11 in off my body as a whole.

Those three pathetic press-ups have become a whopping 40 per workout, and the
measly 3kg weights are now 6kg, meaning I have proper

My skin is clearer, eyes brighter and face more defined because I’ve reduced the carb-inducing bloat.
I’m sleeping better and feeling infinitely less anxious.

Most remarkably – and this is really life-changing – my sciatica is almost
gone and I can come off strong painkillers.
I know sciatica can disappear of its own accord, but the
timing is surely no coincidence. All those exercises have strengthened the muscles around my spine and buttocks and I’m convinced it’s done the trick.

I meet Liz for lunch, nervous about whether she’ll see a difference.
‘Oh wow,’ she says, taking a good look at her pupil. ‘Those arms!
You definitely look younger.’

We chat for a while and she adds: ‘You also seem more content and optimistic.
You have an inner glow and a halo of positivity.’

Well, yes, she would say that, wouldn’t she?
(Probably. Though Liz is known for her candour, so it’s not a
given.) ‘I wasn’t sure you were going to prioritise yourself enough and commit,’ she admits ‘You
weren’t an easy nut to crack so I’m thrilled.’

I’m delighted with my gold star. And I’m grateful to her,
which is one of the key lessons I’ve learned. Gratitude makes everything feel better.

That – along with the kombucha, ice-cold showers (which I have learned to love) and the odd tequila – are the habits I’ll hold
on to. But not (shudder!) the kimchi or flower beds.

As Liz says, everyone deserves to have a better second half – and if I can do it,
anyone can.

« Joker: Folie à Deux » is the No. 1 movie at the box office,
but it might not be destined for a happy ending.

In a turn of events that only Arthur Fleck would find funny, the follow-up to Todd Phillips´ 2019 origin story about the Batman villain opened in theaters
nationwide this weekend to a muted $40 million, according to studio estimates
Sunday, less than half that of its predecessor.
The collapse was swift and has many in the industry wondering: How did the highly anticipated
sequel to an Oscar-winning, billion-dollar film with the same creative team go wrong?

Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged the movie for a $70 million debut, which would
still have been down a fair amount from « Joker´s » record-breaking $96.2 million launch in Oct.
2019. Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival, where it premiered in competition like the first
movie and even got a 12-minute standing ovation.

But the homecoming glow was short-lived, and
the fragile foundation would crumble in the coming
weeks with its Rotten Tomatoes score dropping from 63% at Venice to 33% by its first weekend in theaters.
Perhaps even more surprising were the audience reviews: Ticket
buyers polled on opening night gave the film a deadly D CinemaScore.
Exit polls from PostTrak weren´t any better.
It got a meager half star out of five possible.

« That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from, » said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.
« The biggest issue of all is the reported budget. A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would be a solid debut. »

« Joker: Folie à Deux » cost at least twice as much
as the first film to produce, though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey it was to make.
Phillips told Variety that it was less than the reported $200 million;
Others have it pegged at $190 million. Warner Bros. released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.
About 12.5% of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.

Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens,
bringing its total global earnings estimate to $121.1
million. In the next two weeks, « Joker 2″ will also open in Japan and
China.

Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s »The Wild Robot, » which added $18.7 million in its second weekend,
bringing its domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s
made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ « Beetlejuice Beetlejuice » took third place
in weekend five, Paramount’s « Transformers One » landed in fourth and Universal
and Blumhouse’s « Speak No Evil » rounded out the top
five.

The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s « White Bird, » flopped with just $1.5 million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.

Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but « Joker’s » start is an unwelcome twist for theater owners hoping
to narrow the box office deficit.

Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to make something as « audacious » as the first film.
The sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold, as a Joker superfan, and delved further into the mind of Arthur Fleck,
imprisoned at Arkham and awaiting trial for the murders he committed in the
first. It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and dance numbers to old standards.
Gaga even released a companion album called « ‘Harlequin, » alongside the film.

In his review for The Associated Press, Jake Coyle wrote that « Phillips has followed his very antihero take on the Joker with a very anti-sequel. It combines prison drama, courthouse thriller and musical, and yet turns out remarkably inert given how combustible the original was. »

The sequel has already been the subject of many
think pieces, some who posit that the sequel was deliberately
alienating fans of the first movie. In cruder terms, it´s been called a « middle finger. » But fans often ignore the advice of critics, especially when it comes to opening their wallets
to see revered comic book characters on the big screen.

« They took a swing for the fences, » Dergarabedian said.

« But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want to know what they´re getting when they´re going to the theater. They want the tried and true, the familiar. »

It has some high-profile defenders too: Francis Ford
Coppola, who last week got his own D+ CinemaScore for
his pricey, ambitious and divisive film « Megalopolis, » entered the Joker chat with an Instagram post.

« @ToddPhillips films always amaze me and I enjoy them thoroughly, » Coppola wrote.
« Ever since the wonderful `The Hangover´ he´s always one step ahead of the audience never doing what they expect. »

« Megalopolis, » meanwhile, dropped a terminal 74% in its second weekend with just over
$1 million, bringing its total just shy of $6.5 million against a $120 million budget.

Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started with the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical.

« No fan of the original movie wanted to see a musical sequel, » he wrote on Saturday.

The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse, then about whether it might send the wrong message to the wrong type of person. And yet people still
flocked to see what the fuss was about. « Joker » went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture
and best director, and three wins. It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, until this summer when Marvel’s « Deadpool & Wolverine » took the crown.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at
U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

Joker: Folie À Deux is heading to streaming, just
weeks after its theatrical release. 

The movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, will be available to rent from home starting October 29, in an effort to recoup some of
Warner Bros. investment into the film, as per Variety.

The musical, which bombed at the box office, is ‘poised to lose at least $150 million to $200 million in its theatrical run’ according to the publication.

The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and
about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.

It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break even —
when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner Bros.
sources claim the number is $375 million.

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar
for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took
on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn).

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score
for a comic book movie.

The movie will be available to rent from home starting October 29,
in an effort to recoup some of Warner Bros. investment into the film, according to Variety 

The film is ‘poised to lose at least $150 million to $200
million in its theatrical run’ according to the publication

The sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros, yet ended up being slammed by critics
and failed to ignite at the box office

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and
also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a C+.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a
critic score of 32%.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC
fanbase – with an agent familiar with director Todd Phillips’ process telling Variety he
‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of
the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month. 

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some
down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a
downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.

A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end
of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the
studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he
told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia
and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles
if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost
around 20 per cent less.

A source directly involved with the film recently
shared: ‘The one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail’;

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

A Warner spokesman told the publication the
studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

A source directly involved with the film said:
‘No one could get through to Todd. And the one thing about genre stuff:
If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re
going to fail.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, but
Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying
the studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the film to Venice. 

Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve
Coogan.

Venice, a city long associated with masks and masquerades, was the perfect place to unveil Joker five
years ago; and last month, at the venerable film festival there, it was followed by the
sequel, Joker: Folie À Deux.

The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix once more
in the title role, this time joined by Lady Gaga as what I suppose we
must call the love interest, although that would undervalue
her wonderful performance.

We’ve known since A Star Is Born in 2018 that she can act, but
she really is terrific in a bad-girl role. They’d have loved her at St Trinian’s.

This film is audaciously different in style from the original,
not as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all the same.

Arthur is now behind bars, waiting to see whether
he will be judged sane enough to stand trial for murder, and
in the meantime enjoying his celebrity status with fellow prisoners and even the
warders, one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played
by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Which is more real: the psychopath wearing the mask or the vulnerable fellow behind
it? Either way, identity confusion is the theme of this film, which keeps
being billed as a musical. 

It’s not, really, although music looms large as an expression of Arthur and Lee’s burgeoning
love for one another. And there are a couple of swooning
dance routines that make them look like psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling and
Emma Stone in La La Land (2016).

Moreover, it is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s 1953
classic The Band Wagon that Lee, who claims to have been imprisoned for arson, sets fire to
their prison wing.

The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity to escape, yet Phillips and
his co-writer Scott Silver skilfully toy with our expectations throughout;
each time we anticipate which way the narrative is
going to go, it confounds us by wheeling off
in another direction.

Eventually, after Arthur’s high-profile TV appearance with a smug interviewer played by Steve Coogan, it is time for the trial, with all

For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this
sequel doesn’t scale those heady heights, it
is still a gripping film about mental illness; not quite comparable with all-time greats such
as Psycho (1960) and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975),
but not too far off.

– Joker’s Gotham, of course, is a lightly fictionalised version of New York City.
The real thing is the backdrop to A Different Man, another absorbing story, splendidly written and directed
by Aaron Schimberg, about an urban loner struggling with life.

In the case of the troubled, self-conscious Edward (Sebastian Stan), an aspiring actor, that’s apparently because
he has a disfiguring craniofacial condition. Instructional corporate videos
seem to be about as far as he can get in the acting world.

There are obvious echoes of The Elephant Man (1980),
and for that matter of recent release The Substance,
in which Demi Moore’s character, a former movie star ‘disfigured’ by
a few wrinkles, finds a way of transforming into
her own younger self.

Here, Edward is told by a doctor that ‘an alternative path has presented itself’.

In other words, medical science has found a way to
reverse his condition, turning him into a perfectly attractive middle-aged
man.

But Schimberg’s point, made with great satirical swagger, is that Edward, despite his radical change in appearance,
is still the same person underneath that he
always was.

In his former condition he was befriended by his pretty, charismatic neighbour,
Ingrid (Renate Reinsve), a playwright. Now he is able
to fall into bed with her, and to star in a play she has written about
their relationship, little though she knows of his real identity.

I was even reminded of Tootsie (1982) and Mrs Doubtfire (1993)
as Edward’s new persona fundamentally fails to alter who he actually is.
This is illuminated by the arrival of Oswald, an Englishman with
the same condition Edward once had, but popular, witty, confident, and gloriously played by Adam Pearson (who really does suffer
from a disfiguring condition called neurofibromatosis).

Pearson is probably best-known for his debut film, Jonathan Glazer’s brilliant
Under The Skin (2013). Which is apt, because this picture,
too, is about what’s under the skin.

The 68th London Film Festival opens next week with the world premiere
of Blitz, director Steve McQueen’s drama set in London as the Luftwaffe’s bombs rain down night after night.

Saoirse Ronan, for my money one of the most talented actresses
of her generation, plays Rita, an East End mum whose
son George (Elliott Heffernan) goes missing. It sounds intriguing even without the casting of The
Jam’s former front man Paul Weller — in his feature film debut — as Rita’s father.

I’m also very much looking forward to another world premiere, Joy, the story of the three brilliant British medical pioneers whose work
on IVF led to the world’s first ‘test-tube’ baby, Louise Brown,
in 1978.

It is directed by Ben Taylor, best-known for his TV work
on shows such as Sex Education and Catastrophe,
and stars Bill Nighy, James Norton and Thomasin McKenzie.

I have heard great things about Conclave, the adaptation of Robert Harris’s novel starring Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci.
A couple of new documentaries catch the eye, too. One of them is made by actress Sadie Frost,
whose directing debut was a film about Mary Quant.

This time she turns to another fashion icon of the 1960s, with a feature called
Twiggy.

And Elton John: Never Too Late promises a ‘uniquely intimate’ look at the star’s life and career.
It’s been made by his long-time partner David Furnish, so… we’ll see.
