Cette nouvelle brèche touche les processeurs les plus récents intégrant le Vector Advanced Encryption Standard (VAES) : cela concerne notamment les processeurs Intel (Ice Lake, Tiger Lake et Rocket Lake), ainsi que l’architecture AMD Zen 4. VAES a pour objet d’accélérer le traitement des opérations de chiffrement et de déchiffrement des données sur le PC.
Un bug dans le VAES
C’est donc un composant logiciel très important qui s’assure de la sécurité de l’ordinateur et des données. Microsoft a ajouté du code supplémentaire pour le support de l’accélération matérielle de la bibliothèque Symcrypt de ces processeurs. Des erreurs d’implémentation ont été faites, pouvant occasionner des données perdues ou corrompues.
Microsoft ne précise pas ce que l’utilisateur doit faire si le PC a déjà subi un problème de données endommagées, mais l’éditeur fournit une mise à jour pour Windows 11 et Windows Server 2022 afin d’éviter des problèmes à l’avenir. Toutefois, l’entreprise admet que cette mise à jour peut avoir des effets secondaires pénibles.
Après la mise à jour, l’utilisateur pourra noter des performances en baisse pendant pratiquement un mois, prévient Microsoft. Et pour cause : les opérations de chiffrement peuvent prendre deux fois plus de temps pour se réaliser… Des ralentissements sont donc à prévoir pour BitLocker, TLS (Transport Layer Security) et les accès disque, en particulier chez les clients en entreprise.
Malgré tout, c’est un mal (temporaire) pour un bien, car la mise à jour des systèmes d’exploitation corrige un bug qui peut se montrer particulièrement handicapant pour les utilisateurs ayant la mauvaise habitude de ne pas sauvegarder leurs données sur un support externe.
