Аnyone whoo knnows mee hаs invariably been subject tο a spiel aboᥙt
how much I love Claudia Winkleman. Ιn part, it’s bесause she’s so silly,

But evеn more than ɑny of tһat, it’s because I’m obsessed with everything

Sіnce 2005,Claudia hɑs worкеd ᴡith stylist Sinead McKeefry t᧐ perfect her

black, velvet аnd chunky knits, ᴡith a fair ffew sequins ɑnd prints
(partіcularly tartan) thrown in. Ӏ’m not ɑlone inn myy reverence: tһere are entire Instagram accounts
dedicated tto tracking ɗown the presenter’ѕ outfits.
Butt whilе they offer incredibly ᥙseful style inspo, tѡ᧐ issues ariѕe repeatedly: Claudia’ѕ
clothes arе ᥙsually hugely expensive ߋr solod out (or both).
Տo when the Strictly host strpped ⲟut in a typically
preppy black velvet mini dress оn Sunday, ʏou’ɗ bе forgiven forr assuming іt was by some top-end designer.
Ꮤell, yοu’d bbe wrong. The mini dress actuɑlly camе courtesy of one оf оur favourite һigh street brands,

The dress is mаde fгom plush fabric with contrast

for celebratory bashes ovеr the next ffew mоnths, ρarticularly ԝhen paired with ᴡhite stilettos à la Claud.
Вut it cohld be јust as easily dressed doѡn with
ᴡhite trainers օr ballet flats and a trench for a chic office outfit, ѕo you’ll ceгtainly ɡet your

Like аll оf Albaray’s products, іt’s ethically mɑde uѕing responsible fabric and sеnt

Do Greens and crossbenchers ԝһo claim that transparency аnd inntegrity iѕ at thе heart οf theіr reason fօr entering Parliament inn tһe first pⅼace ear
themselveѕ?
In the pɑst fеw dayss they һave mounted ѕelf-serving arguments ɑgainst
proposed electoral reforms thatt tһe major parties
looҝ sеt to сom together too support.
Тһe reforms іnclude caps fօr how muh money wealthy
individuals can donate, caps οn the amοunt candidates can spend іn individual electorates tо prevent the equivalent
οf an arms race, and ɑ $90milⅼion limit on wһat any party can spend at
an election – аctually lеss tһan thе major parties currently spend.
Ꭲһe propposed new laws aⅼѕo inclսԁe lower disclosure thresholds fօr donations, thys increasing tһe transparency ᧐f wһo makes political donations in thee fіrst placе.
So thee wealthy wont Ьe aЬle to hide behind anonymiy whіⅼe
ᥙsing thеіr cash t᧐ influence election outcomws –
аnd the extent to whіch they can սse
their wealth at аll will be limited.
Ƭhe ƅill ѡill further improve transparency byy ɑlso
increasing tһe speed and frequency tһat discosures of donations neewd tο bе
made.
At presеnt we һave the abnsurd situation іn which donations
ɡet made – but yoᥙ only find out the details of who has given wһat to ѡhom many months latеr, well after
elections аrе won and lost.
In other w᧐rds, ᴡhat is broadly being proposed wilⅼ resut in much grеater transparency and
fɑr lеss bіg money being injected intⲟ campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed tһе major parties ᴡere ‘running scared’ ԝith tһe policy and warned the reform
ᴡould ‘not stⲟp thе rot’
Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (ⅼeft) fired
ɑ warning shot – saying if it serves onpy tһe mawjor parties ‘іt’s a rort, not reform’. Teal independent ᎪCT senator David Pocock (right)
ѕaid: ‘Whɑt seemѕ tο Ьe happening іѕ a major-party stitch-up’
Anyⲟne donating more than $1,000 to a political party, ɑѕ opposed to $16,000 under tһe current rules, ѡill need to disclos having done sо.
And how much thеy can donate ill be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals hаve quіckly condemned tһe proposed new laws, labeling tһеm a
‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
Тhey havе lost their collective minds аfter finding ߋut thаt Labor’ѕ
proposal just might secure the support ᧐ff tһe opposition.
Ι had to double check who waas criticising ԝһɑt exactly before even starting to ᴡrite thiѕ column.
Becauѕe І hаd assumed – incorrectly – tһat tһese impoгtant transparency measures stamping
ߋut tһе influence of the welthy mսѕt һave been proposed byy the virtue-signalling Greens οr thе corruption-fighting Teals, іn a united crossbench effort tⲟ drag thе major parties closer tо accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean ᥙρ ɑ rotten ѕystem, is Ƅeing рut forward by
Labor ɑnd iѕ opposed bby a growing cabal օf crossbenchers.
Ιt maҝes yoou wondеr wһat they have tο hide. Ꮲut simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest tߋo mᥙch on thіs issue.
Labor is thօught to be trying to muscle out major political donors
ѕuch aѕ Clive Palmer
Anoother potential target оf the laws іs businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court
Ꭲhe Green haᴠe taken massive donations in the paѕt,
contrary tօ theiг irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt
аnd Senator Mehreen Faruqi аге pictured)
The major parties have ⅼong cokmplained аbout tһe influence
the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wielods Ьehind thhe scenes amongst tһe Teals.
And we кnow thhe Greens havе tɑken massie donatjons frоm thhe
wealthy in tһe past, contrary to thеir irregular calls to tighten donations rules.
Νow tһаt tangible cyange һas ƅeen proposed,
thes bastions օf virtue ɑre running a mile frrom reforms that wull curtail dark
art օf political donations.
Thе Labor government isn’t even seeking foг these transparency rules to take effеct іmmediately,
bу the wаy. Ӏt ѡon’t bе sοme sort of quick-paced power play ƅefore tһe next election designed tο catch thе crossbench oᥙt.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, ցiving
eveгyone enouցһ time to absorb ɑnd understand thе ϲhanges bef᧐re preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal hhas уet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine tһe oppositiokn ѡant too go over the laws ᴡith a ine tooth comb.
As thyey shοuld – beause іt certainly іsn’t beyߋnd Labor tߋo іnclude hidden one-party advantages in tһe proposed design wһich woսld create loopholes оnly the unions are capable of taҝing advantage օf, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally іn the yeɑrs tօ
come.
But short of such baked-іn trickiness scuttling a deal tto ցеt thеse proposed laws implemented, tһe
crossbench shߋuld offer tһeir support,
not cynical opposition, to ѡhat iss being advocated fοr.
Tһey might even be aƄle to offer somethіng worthwhile tһat сould Ьe incorporated іn the package.
Tо nnot do ѕo exposes thеir utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about Ьeing
inn politics tο ‘clean things up’.

Adam Bandt said people ‘can make their own judgment’ about him
enjoying an exclusive and discretionary perk from Qantas during a tense exchange with a journalist live on radio.
The Greens leader has been outed as a member of the Qantas
Chairman’s Lounge, an invitation-only set of catered waiting
areas and services handed out by the airline
in what has been called ‘Australia’s most exclusive club’.
Mr Bandt was challenged on Monday by ABC Radio National stand-in host
Steve Cannane that he was ‘enjoying free hospitality from a
company that has illegally sacked hundreds of
workers’.
Mr Bandt replied: ‘And I’ll declare that and people can make their own judgement about what they think about that.’
Cannane was referring to the Federal Court’s ruling
that Qantas illegally sacked 1,700 workers at the start
of the Covid pandemic in a case brought by Transport Workers Union.
Commenting on the sacking in June of 2020, Mr Bandt called it a ‘devastating day
for thousands of Qantas workers & their families’ in a
Facebook post. ‘We’re thinking of you,’ he wrote.
Cannane challenged Mr Bandt further saying: ‘You don’t think you should be a little
purer on this and just not take their (Qantas’s)
hospitality?’
Mr Bandt said he always made declarations about matters such
as this and argued that the party’s policies to tax big corporations heavily show the perks were not impacting the Greens.

How Greens leader Adam Bandt spent thousands on private jet flights
while lecturing YOU about climate change
Mr Bandt was spotted in September flying business class from Melbourne to
Canberra seated next to Senator Jacqui Lambie.
Albanese government ministers Tim Watts and Catherine King
were on the same flight but were with the masses in economy class.
It has been previously reported that Mr Bandt opts to frequently fly business despite his party’s core policy of cutting C02
emissions.
Flying business class emits about three times as much carbon as economy class because the seats take up more room and more of
them are empty, according to a World Bank study.
Fellow Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather last year said he had shunned a Chairman’s Lounge membership
and refuses to travel business class.
Earlier this year Mr Bandt’s flying habits led to controversy.
Mr Bandt’s flying habits have been a previous source of controversy after
it was revealed he frequently opts for business class and has even taken private jets to election events
Mr Bandt used two private jets during the 2022 federal election campaign, landing tax
payers with the $23,000 bill.
One flight was between Queensland regional centres Townsville and Rockhampton on March
7 but he also boarded a $15,000 private plane along the well-travelled Brisbane to Canberra route to attend
his party’s election campaign launch.
Mr Bandt isn’t the only politician in the hot seat with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese being asked if he
has included both his son and partner as ‘plus
one’ Chairman’s Club members.
He is also being asked about free flight upgrades including an international one
he is alleged to have received from Qantas in new book The Chairman’s Lounge
authored by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.
The Greens are licking their electoral wounds after the Queensland state poll, where they are battling to hold onto their two seats after stating
they aimed to triple their representation in parliament.
With 72 per cent of the vote counted they appear to have retained the Brisbane seat of Maiwar but suffered a 4.6 per cent swing to the ALP.
However, they remain behind South Brisbane,
which has seen a massive 12.4 per cent swing to Labor with 64 per cent of votes counted.
WHAT IS THE QANTAS CHAIRMAN’S CLUB?
The Qantas Chairman’s Lounge is an invitation-only club approved by the
company chairman, with the guest list a closely-guarded secret.
It has been dubbed ‘the most exclusive club in the country’ and comes with a distinct black card.
Members include senior-ranking MPs including ministers,
state premiers and the Prime Minister, leaders of major unions and
sporting groups, Qantas ambassadors, selected A-list celebrities, major corporate figures and high-profile
media personalities.
The clubs can be found in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide but are not signed, you have to know where
to look.
Inside you will find expensive wood and brass furnishings, wool
carpet and marble flooring all bathed in natural light.
Members enjoy fine à la carte dining with a complimentary premium array
of beers, spirits and Australian wines. Wine bottles are often given as departing gift
Facilities may also include spas, showers and an assortment of
books and magazines.
Members may bring in two guests at a
time.
Lounge attendants personally alert you when your flight is to board
and your personal preferences are logged for each flight.
Membership also entitles you to first-class facilities at Qantas partner airlines.

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair Isle
knit. Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull
out from the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper (especially the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary)
or for a winter sport holiday (specifically for après-ski), the Fair Isle jumper has now become somewhat of a fashion statement.
The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island
in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting technique to create those distinctive patterns with multiple colours.
It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII)
in the 1920s, and has remained a casual wardrobe staple for members of the Royal Family,
including Kate Middleton, whose jumper collection includes at least three different Fair Isle designs.
Kensington Palace
Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered a Fair Isle vest by Molly Goddard over
a light blue button-down in a snap for Instagram.
The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest from Cotswolds-based knitwear brand Cooking Apple, and sported a chunky Fair Isle crewneck with white, straight-leg jeans, black loafers
and an oversized, black leather blazer to ring in the festive season at private members’ club in London last year.
A host of designers have dropped Fair Isle-inspired knits for
AW24, proving the multicoloured jumpers have become a timeless investment.
If, as in our case, that £1,885 cashmere turtleneck from
Loro Piana is a little out of your budget,

Folie à Deux premiere on Wednesday.
Attending the event, which took place during the 81st Venice International Film Festival, the siblings stood side-by-side while smiling for photos at Sala Grande
The film is the much-anticipated follow-up to 2019’s Academy Award-winning Joker, which earned more than $1 billion at the global box office and remains the highest-grossing R-rated
film of all time.
The second instalment finds Arthur Fleck institutionalised at Arkham awaiting trial
for his crimes as Joker.
‘While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only
stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that’s always been inside
him,’ a press release shared.
The last time that Joaquin played The Joker, Arthur Fleck,
he had to drop three and a half stone. He went on a diet of lettuce, asparagus and
apples.
Five years later he has returned to the Oscar-winning role again in – and
says that he had to lose almost the same amount of weight once more, and is never doing it again.
Speaking at the Venice Film Festival he said:
‘I’m not going to talk through specifics of the diet, because I just think nobody wants to hear that.
‘But this time, it felt a bit more complicated just because there was so much dance rehearsal
that we were doing, which I didn’t have last time.
‘It felt a bit more difficult, but it is safe. But you’re right, I’m now 49,
I probably shouldn’t do this again. This is probably it for me.’

Folie à Deux will see Joaquin reprise his role as Arthur Fleck AKA Joker and is
set for release on October 4 (pictured with Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn)
He added: ‘I know I was responsible last time for talking about it,
but it’s difficult to do so.
‘That becomes your obsession because you’re working the entire time to get to a certain weight.
‘So then you end up talking about it, and then it just sounds like an actor going on and on about how much weight
they lost.
‘By the end of that run I was so sick of myself and
angry at myself for making such a big deal about that part, because you just do what you’re ****ing supposed to do.
So this time I was like, ‘I’m not going to do that’.’

My Heart Will Go On, in a new video this week.
The iconic songstress, 56, who is best known for the 1997 Titanic soundtrack song, was seen attempting to stream her rendition of
Edith Piaf’s Hymne à l’amour – but Siri failed to understand
her and instead suggested My Heart Will Go On.
In the clip, Dion says: ‘Hey Siri, play Hymne à l’amour by Céline Dion?’ with Siri responding:

A frustrated Dion said: ‘No! Hello, No, no, no, Hey Siri, can you play Hymne à l’amour by Céline Dion please?’
Again, Siri replied: ‘I cannot find that track by Céline Dion but here is My Heart Will Go On.’

How Celine Dion fought Stiff Person Syndrome every day to be fit to open the Olympics
Dion burst out laughing and said ‘never mind!’ before suggesting she ask the question in a strong French accent.
After this Siri responded: ‘Okay, here is ‘Hymne à l’amour by Céline Dion.’
Dion looked shocked before smiling and giving the thumbs up.
In July Dion made a musical comeback with the track at the 2024 Paris Olympic Opening Ceremony amid her battle with incurable condition, stiff-person syndrome.
28 years after making her Olympic debut in 1996 at Atlanta’s stadium, Celine proved she’s still got it following her emotional act in the French city at the Eiffel Tower.
And after bringing fans to tears, Celine reflected on the iconic moment with a heartfelt message on X.
She wrote: ‘I’m honored to have performed tonight, for the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony, and so full of joy to be back in one of my very favorite cities!
‘Most of all, I’m so happy to be celebrating these amazing athletes, with all their stories of sacrifice and determination, pain and perseverance.

I hope that being here means that it has come

‘You should all be so proud, we know how hard you
have worked to be the best of the best. Stay focused, keep going, my heart is with you!

Celine looked incredible in a shimmering silver gown as she performed in front of the Eiffel Tower.
She gave a rendition of Hymne à L’amour, which was originally sung by French music icon Edith Piaf.
The song was originally released in 1950 and its title
translates into English as ‘Hymn to Love.’
The My Heart Will Go On songstress looked to be on the verge of tears as she finished the performance to cheers from the
crowd, whilst viewers at home were also left emotional.

Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the views of everyday Australians, unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United States.
The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’.
‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening in Australia at the moment,
which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe countered.
‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to bring a non-party-line series of points to the
argument.
‘And it’s working well. It’s working for
us. In that it’s making both of the main parties
re-examine who they are and what they stand for.
Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US politics is completely dominated by the
Democrat and Republican parties.
There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and
Reform parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.
Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to
perform well on occasion.
The Oscar-winning actor (pictured ) made the
observation in response to podcast host Joe Rogan who complained that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’
Joe Rogan (pictured) is one of the most powerful media figures in the world
Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968 US election which saw him garner 10 million votes and take five southern states, while another disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states on a
similarly racist platform but with only a million votes.
The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get on the ballot in dozens of
states as an independent candidate before he pulled out and backed Republican Donald Trump.
He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s
incoming cabinet.
Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.
The former New York property developer had even considered running for president in the 2000 election under
the banner of that movement – formed by former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the
popular vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes.
Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former
Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying six
states including California and coming second ahead
of Republican William Taft.
Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent
politicians who have taken votes away from the
two traditional parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition
This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now have 12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives.
Zali Steggall (pictured) became the first ‘teal’ independent to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election
Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong
climate platforms but are fiscally conservative have been labelled ‘teal’ candidates.
This is because they have combined their ‘green’ views on climate with
the traditional ‘blue’ approach of the centre-right Liberal Party on economics.
Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to
achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister
Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.
In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022
election.
She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 16, with this tally including the four Greens, three conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.
Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired in August, has recently resurfaced in teal
social media adverts.
They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist
Simon Holmes à Court, who founded Climate 200,
which has given campaign funding to some teal candidates.
Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were teals, however.
Maverick independent Bob Katter has just
celebrated 50 years in parliament (pictured:
being congratulated by prime minister Anthony Albanese)
Dai Lee, a former state Liberal candidate, defeated former Labor
frontbencher and former NSW Labor premier
Kristina Keneally in the south-west Sydney
seat of Fowler.
And, of course, maverick Bob Katter who has
just celebrated 50 years in parliament, spending 20 years as a Queensland state MP
before serving the past three decades in federal parliament as the
MP for the regional far north Queensland electorate
of Kennedy.
Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a bid to teach school kids how to
fire rifles and a desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.
The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 17 in late
2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals in protest at its
opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.
The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house – the
highest proportion of non major party MPs since Federation in 1901.

When you are at a 70 ft pool how many laps for a mile?
Asked by Wiki User
It would take about 21.5 lengths (10.8 laps) to equal one mile.
Bright and early, my old friend, the beauty and wellness entrepreneur
Liz Earle, is standing at my door clutching a Kilner jar with what looks like a small
sponge floating in murky water.
‘I made kombucha for you,’ she says with an enthusiasm I don’t entirely share.
(The sponge, it turns out, is the Scoby, or ‘symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast’, which is what’s
used to ferment sweetened tea to make kombucha. I don’t realise at the time,
but this hideous thing takes weeks to develop and is in fact a
very generous gift.)
The truth is, I’d drink (almost) anything if it gave me Liz’s
zip. At 61, a mother of five and a new grandmother,
she honestly looks 20 years younger. Fans of her
YouTube channel and her 170,000 Instagram followers will know how bright and smooth her skin is, but in person she is fizzing with energy, too.
Liz and I have been friends for 25 years – over which time she has
somehow seemed to gain in vitality as I, nine years her junior,
have… well, deflated.
Beauty and wellness entrepreneur Liz Earle, right,
and Beatrice Aidin met back in the 1990s when they were both beauty journalists
So here’s my plan. I am going to Live Like Liz for a full eight weeks, morning to night, to see just how much I, too, can turn back the clock.
I am going to eat, drink and exercise like Liz, ‘ground myself’ in a flower bed in my pyjamas like her,
and even tape up my mouth à la Liz. From my gut to my hormones, my brain to the very
cells of my skin, I will follow the ‘bio-hacks’ set out in her new book A Better Second
Half: Dial Back Your Age To Live A Longer, Healthier, Happier Life, which swiftly became a bestseller on its release this year.
Liz says it can’t fail, so long as I commit to
it.
‘Who’s to say we can’t or shouldn’t change
the way we age?’ she asks.
‘I was stronger, fitter and more capable in my 50s than I was in my 40s, so
why can’t I be even more so in my 60s, 70s and beyond?’
Perhaps more significantly, after the ‘car crash of emotional wreckage’ caused by the breakdown of
her second marriage, and the divorce she went
through in 2020, she now says: ‘I’m happier at 61 than I was at 40.’
Career-wise, it shows. When we met back in the 1990s we were both beauty journalists.
At launches for new products, I’d merrily down the free Krug while Liz sipped sparkling water.
‘Ah Bea, you were the yin to my yang,’ she says.
Now, her wellness empire has mushroomed…
and I’m suffering major work anxiety, a not-unrelated financial crisis and severe
sciatica.
Frankly, I look and feel knackered. My skin is dull and I have
dark circles under my eyes. Physical pain interferes with my sleep, and I’ve been turning rather too readily to the sauvignon blanc to
help me nod off.
Food is not a priority: I’m either not interested or craving
sugar, which means I’m a good 10lb heavier than I
should be.
So, can living like my rather fabulous friend make me feel as young as she looks?
More to the point – can I really stick to it, kombucha and all?
‘Come on Bea, get off your backside!’ Liz demands…
Liz (left) puts Beatrice through her paces in the
gym. Beatrice needs extra help with exercise because of her
sciatica
Week one: I face up to my middle-age spread
Liz’s top-line diet philosophy is high-protein, low carb, meaning
she’s a fan of lots of foods I love but didn’t think I should eat:
butter, unprocessed meat, avocados, good quality cheese,
taramasalata and thick Greek yoghurt.
High protein helps us ‘shift to a leaner, more toned shape, and lose that middle-aged
spread,’ she says.
Timing matters. Liz eats two meals a day – brunch around 11am and
dinner at 7pm. The order matters too: clear your plate of chicken before rice,
because eating protein before carbs keeps blood sugar levels stable.
In recent years she has increased her coffee intake (before 2pm) because studies show four to five cups is ‘strongly associated with living
longer’ thanks to the bioactives in coffee beans such as chlorogenic
acid.
She eats wheatgerm, soya beans and nuts to up her intake of spermidine –
a dietary molecule that interacts with our DNA and mimics an anti-ageing process called autophagy, which de-ages us at a cellular level.
Alcohol is basically a no-no. Liz has the ‘occasional glass’ of wine or tequila, but
never more than two and never alone.
I chuck out the ready meals and plonk, roll up my sleeves and start cooking
from scratch. I grill venison, roast a chicken and make soups
with the leftovers.
Eating at specific times works for me – I’m never very hungry first
thing – and enjoying the protein part of each meal first means I’m fuller and find it easy to
cut back on my carb portions.
Gut health is a big focus, which means more fermented foods.
Much to my surprise, I love the kombucha and soon start to brew my own using Liz’s Scoby.
But homemade kimchi – fermented veg – is a harder sell.
When a lunch guest asks me why I’m forcing myself to eat something I dislike
so much, I reply solemnly: ‘Liz told me to.’
Week two: I discover I can do only 3 press-ups
I really need help with exercise because sciatica means
my normal routine has gone to pot.
Thankfully, Liz reckons just ten minutes a day of exercises such as squats, lunges and press-ups is
more valuable in the long term than a high-intensity gym session once a week or a long park run.
She introduces me to her personal trainer, Michael Garry, who delivers
the (bombshell, but welcome) news that running any distance over 5k can ‘start to have negative effects’ on our immune system and bone strength.
If you’re a runner, make it harder by speeding up your time, not increasing your
distance.
At Michael’s insistence, I consult a physio about my sciatica,
and then he devises a daily regime for me. I
try press-ups and make it to three. Mortifying. Perseverance is clearly key.
As are weights, especially in your 50s. ‘The more muscle you have, the more your bones are protected from
osteoporosis, especially during midlife,’ says Michael.
For cardio, says Beatrice, I keep swimming twice
a week. But instead of plodding up and down the pool, I start to compete with myself,
speeding up the laps
For my slack and flabby upper arms, he advises shoulder presses and hammer curls, with 3kg weights in both hands.
I try tricep dips off a chair, and quickly find I can increase
my reps – until by week four I’m doing two sets of 15.
I work out three times a week at home. At first the routine takes
40 minutes but the more I do, the faster I do
it, until the whole thing – stretching, press-ups,
weights – takes just 20 minutes.
For cardio, I keep swimming twice a week. But instead of plodding up and down the pool, I start to compete with myself, speeding up the laps.
Week three: I slow the hormonal roller coaster
I’m menopausal and already on HRT, but I know I could improve how I
feel, which is sluggish and foggy.
Liz introduces me to something called the ‘estrobolome’
– the specific collection of bacteria in the gut that influences
how our body uses oestrogen. Put simply, some microbes improve the efficiency with which oestrogen reaches tissues
around the body, meaning we use our dwindling
supplies more effectively.
The best way to support your estrobolome is by eating fibre from veg, seeds and nuts, plus some of the low-sugar fruits such
as apples, berries and plums. Back to the supermarket I
go.
To boost the happy hormone serotonin, my saintly mentor insists
I finish my morning shower with a minimum 60-second
blast of icy cold water, resulting – she claims – in a ‘post-shock high’ and ‘genuine glow’.
Hmmm. I find it hard to relinquish the comfort of a hot
shower and feel not happy but mutinous as I step out of
the bathroom shivering.
Week four: I stand in the flower bed
Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning and standing barefoot on the grass.
‘Grounding’ apparently enables electrons from the surface of the
Earth to transmit deep into the body, ‘where they have
an anti-inflammatory effect’.
Liz tells me she does this in the tranquil grounds of her glorious pile in the West Country.
I do it in a flower bed in my shared patio, still in my pyjamas,
and feel, well, very self-conscious. Later I graduate to the park,
and – look away now – tread in dog mess, which does not improve my emotional wellbeing.
She also encourages us to keep a Five Minute Gratitude Journal twice a day.
‘Gratitude is… a superpower that improves longevity and supports the immune system,’ she says.
I can’t help but think my better-off mate has rather a lot more to smile about than me
but, following instructions, I write down three things I am grateful
for every morning, and every night a short list of ‘good things’
that happened that day, plus another (longer) list of ‘things that are concerning me’.
My scepticism around gratitude slowly lifts as I find it does make me realise what’s
important and what’s not. It helps me see that things are a lot
brighter than I thought. Packing in a rush for a weekend away, I can’t find my journal and am
surprised by how bereft I feel without it.
Week five: I start to sleep well
I’m a night owl – I stay up too late watching TV and end up hitting
my snooze button past 8.30am… and occasionally edging towards 10am.
Liz reckons anyone can improve their sleep if they follow her routine, which means setting an evening alarm for 9pm – to remind yourself to start ‘winding down for bed’.
Emails, social media and TV are switched off, replaced by a printed book or a podcast.
She takes 120g of magnesium glycinate in a milky drink half an hour before bed (and stops eating
two hours before).
Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning
Liz wears a bamboo fibre nightie or pyjamas to keep warm because she sleeps with an open window, which she covers with blackout blinds and curtains, and sprinkles her pillow with a few drops
of neat lavender essential oil.
I’m an e-book reader, so already failing at this routine.
Still, I leave my phone charging in the kitchen and buy a
regular alarm clock. The lavender oil makes me sneeze, so I
spray my pillows with C. Atherley Geranium Spray instead.
Oh, and I tape my lips up – Liz shows me how when she delivers the kombucha.
Forcing yourself to breathe through your nose is said to promote more restful sleep.
All of this is time-consuming and takes practise, but I find the ritual
soothing. Five weeks in, I’m getting to sleep earlier than I have for years – at 10.30pm after 20 minutes drop-off time -and waking at 7.30am.
How virtuous!
Week six: I crash off the wagon
I’m doing my best, but then I go for lunch with a friend who chirpily suggests a glass of wine, which turns into a bottle.
And then a second. Later, with a daytime hangover, I head to M&S and find reduced
dauphinoise potatoes, which become dinner.
Liz has got me on a blood sugar tracker called Lingo (£289
for two months – you jab a biosensor the size and shape of a plastic bottle top into your upper arm, and then link it to an app on your phone), which shows
a massive post-potato spike and then a huge slump, which makes me tired and irritable.
Who knew that such deliciousness had such a high glycaemic
load?
I call Liz to ‘fess up. ‘I have the odd day when I
lie in, eat too much cake and drink too much tequila,’ she says.
‘But that’s fine because you then know what to do to put it right.
It’s not about being perfect.’ Phew!
Week seven: I tackle my financial mess
Re-reading my journal really helps here. By documenting what I was so worried about day by day, my perspective on it changes.
Here, in black and white, is a record of how I felt at the start
of this project and how I’ve evolved.
I’ve come unstuck – in a good way. I’m not going to pretend it’s been easy because change is
uncomfortable, but I realise there’s simply nothing
to be gained from the worry spiral.
If freelance life is tough, and my income erratic, I’m going to do something about it.
Buoyed with the confidence that comes with action, I apply for part-time admin jobs.
As personal trainer Michael observes as we work
out on Zoom, I wouldn’t have done this before.
He’s right. Finally I’ve started to take
control.
Week eight: And the winner is…
So how have eight weeks of Living Like Liz changed me?
Physically, I’m in much better shape. I’ve lost 7 lb and taken an extraordinary 5 in off my waist
and 11 in off my body as a whole.
Those three pathetic press-ups have become a whopping 40 per
workout, and the measly 3kg weights are now 6kg,
meaning I have proper bicep definition. The sleeveless tops will be coming out
again this party season.

Our essential guide to beating back pain: What’s causing your
aches
My skin is clearer, eyes brighter and face more defined because I’ve reduced the
carb-inducing bloat. I’m sleeping better and feeling infinitely less
anxious.
Most remarkably – and this is really life-changing – my sciatica is almost gone and I
can come off strong painkillers. I know sciatica can disappear of
its own accord, but the timing is surely no coincidence.
All those exercises have strengthened the muscles around my spine and buttocks
and I’m convinced it’s done the trick.
I meet Liz for lunch, nervous about whether she’ll see a difference.
‘Oh wow,’ she says, taking a good look at her pupil. ‘Those arms!
You definitely look younger.’
We chat for a while and she adds: ‘You also seem more content and optimistic.
You have an inner glow and a halo of positivity.’
Well, yes, she would say that, wouldn’t she?
(Probably. Though Liz is known for her candour, so it’s not a given.)
‘I wasn’t sure you were going to prioritise yourself
enough and commit,’ she admits ‘You weren’t an easy nut to crack so I’m
thrilled.’
I’m delighted with my gold star. And I’m grateful to her, which is one of
the key lessons I’ve learned. Gratitude makes everything feel
better.
That – along with the kombucha, ice-cold showers (which I have learned to love)
and the odd tequila – are the habits I’ll hold on to. But not (shudder!) the kimchi or flower
beds.
As Liz says, everyone deserves to have a better second half – and if I can do it,
anyone can.
A Better Second Half: Dial Back Your Age To Live A Longer,
Healthier, Happier Life, by Liz Earle (Hodder &
Stoughton, £22).

The film earned $18.3 million at the box office according to The Numbers.
Smile 2 – starring Scott, Lukas Gage (pictured) and Ray Nicholson – will
drop October 18 with The Wrap predicting the
film could make $22million over its opening weekend
Terrifier 3 stars David Howard Thornton as homicidal clown Art who brutally murders an array of victims in stomach churning scenes
2022’s Smile became a smash hit – making $217million against a $17million budget.
Landing in third place was Joker: Folie à Deux. After winning the box office competition during its debut weekend could not overcome the bad
reviews, enduring an 82-percent decline in ticket sales.
The movie collected only $7.055 million, in spite of being in more than four thousand theaters across the US.

Australians have discovered an unlikely pop-up store offering shoppers ‘incredible’ deals on clothing, homewares, food, and electronics.
The temporary Vinnies locations have been set up around Victoria to help shoppers get through the cost of
living crisis ravaging the country.
Vinnies, or the St Vincent de Paul Society, is a charity that works
to provide support and assistance to people in need.
Most items are brand new stock donated by corporate partners including Christmas decorations.
Popular bargains include $10 large jars of Biscoff,
$2 bags of Red Rock Deli chips, and discounted
shoes from Boston Bros.
Shoppers will find men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, shoes from top brands, and even electrical goods at the Vinnies pop-up locations.
Many have purchased vacuums, air fryers, Adidas shoes, printers,
and kitchen knives from previous pop-up shops.
There is presently a location in Ascot Vale which is open until 3 November,
and another in Boronia which will remain open until Christmas –
or until stock runs out.

Popular bargains include $10 large jars of Biscoff, $2
bags of Red Rock Deli chips, and discounted shoes from Boston Bros
A new store will open in Richmond at Dimmey’s on 7 November.
The themed Richmond location will focus on goods for Christmas, summer, and the holiday season – but it will also include household items, Bric-à-brac, and electrical items.
Shoppers have shared their thoughts on the pop-up
locations online.
‘They have all the trending products – it’s so awesome,’ one said.
‘I bought a hair dryer from Vinnies and
I’m obsessed with it,’ another wrote.
‘I always have such good luck at Vinnies, I have to go,’ a woman added.
For those interested in the finer things, shoppers have discovered a ‘hidden gem’ discount retailer where you can find designer
buys from brands like Fendi, Dior, and Aje for affordable prices.
TK Maxx – which has stores in New South Wales, Victoria,
Queensland and South Australia – is the answer to buying new clothes and
shoes on a budget.

Beth Zazlan, from Queensland, recently found a gold mine of clothing lines from
Australian brands like Camilla and Marc, Acler, Bec+Bridge, Shona Joy, Dion Lee, Zimmerman, and Acler.
‘I was there for a pillow but I ended up grabbing some sparkly
earrings from [American jewellery brand] Badgley
Mischka,’ Beth told FEMAIL.
TK Maxx sells old stock from previous seasons – and shoppers have
described it as a ‘clearance treasure hunt’.
Many have seen bags from Fendi, Dior, and Bottega Venetta on sale.
Others have spotted Gucci and Versace sunglasses, Hugo Boss accessories, and Christopher Esber dresses.
Beth said, ‘I was truly blown away – so if you’re looking for a bargain, head there.’
A David Jones employee revealed in a comment that discounted
items from stores that aren’t sold are shipped to TK

A video of Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix’s awkward
reaction after they were asked to share their thoughts on Joker: Folie à Deux has gone viral amid
the immense backlash that the film is facing.
The highly anticipated Joker sequel hit theaters on Friday, but immediately,
it was fiercely panned by viewers and critics alike.
Amid the scrutiny, a clip of Lady Gaga and Joaquin discussing the film has taken over the web.
While chatting with Good Morning Britain last week, the two stars were asked if the movie turned out to be ‘everything they expected.’
Immediately, they both turned to look at one another
and smiled.

on Joker: Folie à Deux has gone viral amid the backlash the film is facing
The highly anticipated Joker sequel hit theaters on Friday, but was
almost immediately panned by viewers and critics
For a few seconds, the two stars sat in silence as
they both waited for the other to answer the question.
‘Tell them how you feel, Joaquin,’ Lady Gaga, 38, said to her
costar as she held out a fake microphone in front of him.
‘It’s so hard to talk about but I think we
feel like we achieved what we set out to do,’ Joaquin, 49,
simply stated.
Someone on X, formerly Twitter, posted the moment online
last week and it went viral, gaining more then 437,000 views in a matter of days – and
many users took their initial silence as proof that
they ‘didn’t like’ the film.
The internet has been flooded with negative posts about the
flick ever since it premiered, with one user branding it as a ‘bore’ and another claiming it had ‘no plot.’
Many social media users have also slammed the movie’s final scene, which saw main character Arthur Fleck (portrayed by Joaquin) brutally stabbed to death by a fellow inmate.
This meant that the man that audiences had been watching over the course
of the two movies was never the Joker at all, but in fact, the infamous villain from the Batman series was really just the random inmate who
killed Arthur in the last moments of the film.
The shocking twist left numerous viewers unsatisfied, and they took to social
media to share their frustration.

The shocking twist ending left many viewers unsatisfied and they took to social media to share their frustration
‘The ending made the movie a complete waste,’ one outraged user wrote.
‘The ending was pathetic,’ scathed someone else. ‘WTF you mean no Joker?’
‘The ending made no sense,’ added another person.
‘That ending? It’s so bad that not only it ruins Joker 2 but also the first Joker for the audience,’ read a
fourth tweet.
‘The Joker had so much potential but that f**king ending
ruined everything,’ a fifth said.
The Todd Phillips-directed musical serves as a follow-up
to the 2019 box office hit, which was simply titled
Joker.
The first film grossed over $1 billion and at the time
was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.
It received 11 Oscar nominations – two of which it won.
The sequel, however, has already been much less successful.
It had a lackluster $40 million debut at the box office in its first
weekend, and has a low rating of 33 percent and 31 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
‘Undoing much of the goodwill from its predecessor,
the sequel convolutes what could have been a unique character
study into a bloated encore that goes out with a whimper,’ reads one review.
Another critic wrote, ‘This movie is a disjointed mess and a waste of time.
It’s just tired, not particularly interesting, but it does look good from
a production design standpoint.’

An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you
simply didn’t refuse. Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else.
Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap.
There may have been other things on the menu,
but no one paid them much heed. This was all about
lashings of the black stuff.
Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar:
‘there are few better dishes on earth…only the price, at just
under £150, is ridiculous’
Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another
Mayfair backstreet. But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to
swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.
Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty
– dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the
glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.
Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale,
luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the
shadows.
We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque
monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to.
Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.
We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such
effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of
‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment,
insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a study in tuber art.
A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime.
Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if I could.
But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar. One taste is never enough.

The singer, whose hits include Bad Romance, Born This Way, Just Dance and Poker Face,

Among the tracks on the album included two new songs, and standards such as

Lady Gaga in the movie played the role of Harley Quinn opposite Joaquin Phoenix, who earned the Best

A ménage à trois and intimacy outside the bedroom are sexual fantasies that we’ve all heard before.
But what about having sex in a desert, or even a storage unit?
These are just two of the unusual sexual fantasies social media users have confessed to trying.
A hilarious Reddit thread, named ‘what is a sexual fantasy you do
not recommend’, features the bizarre sexcapades of commenters — many
of who bitterly regret their risqué acts.
The thread began with a question from user u/Fantastic-Ant-4429, who asked: ‘What is a
sexual fantasy you do not recommend fulfilling?’
Having sex in the desert, a library and on a plane were some of the most upvoted responses, Huffpost reported.
Reddit user u/ElPresidente714 admitted to trying to have sex in the desert at night when coming back
from Vegas. But in reality, they were met with ‘creepy crawly desert things
don’t sleep at night’.
Another, u/DonSmitty said a ‘buddy in high school’ covered his girlfriend (including her genitals) in chocolate syrup.
But it didn’t end well — she got infected with a ‘crazy’ yeast infection.
Doing it in a storage unit was another unusual fantasy which ended badly.
User u/isthisfark wrote: ‘There’s a closing time and if you miss it you’ll get
stuck behind the gates for the night. Then the
people who live there start rustling.’
Not everyone pursues or even plans to act on their sexual fantasies in real life.
But a handful of those who have tried to make their browser history a reality have confessed they didn’t
quite go to plan — a thread on Reddit revealed
The thread began with a question from user u/Fantastic-Ant-4429 , who asked: ‘What is a sexual fantasy you do not recommend fulfilling?’ (pictured,

Nationally 55 per cent of Brits reported having sex at least one a
week, this rising to 59 per cent of men and falling to 51 per cent of women
One commenter u/hot-snake-70 confessed they found out the hard way that
it ‘stings’ if you put your penis ‘in a glass of red wine’.
Threesomes were also suggested to be a bad idea with user u/Touristupdatenola adding: ‘If I wanted to disappoint
two people simultaneously, I’d have dinner with both my parents.’
Another user u/odysseus-23, warned against trying to have sex in a library due to the likelihood
of getting ‘caught on the cameras’.
And while joining the Mile High Club — engaging in sex acts while aboard an airplane —
might sound exciting, some warn that it is anything but.

« Our forecasts imply a November jobs report that is just ambiguous enough – strong job growth but a slight rise in unemployment, alongside moderate gains in pay – to keep a December rate cut as our base case. »
Although markets have reached the eclipse of the earnings seasons, quarterly results
from Dollar General and Kroger would be on the watchlist
before markets open.

Celine Dion’s showstopping ‘live’ performance at the start of
the Paris 2024 Olympics was pre-recorded, it was claimed in France today.
Millions were moved to tears when the 56-year-old Canadian superstar sang Hymne à L’amour
(Hymn to Love) in front of the Eiffel Tower.
It was the culmination of a lavish Opening Ceremony mainly held along the banks of the River Seine
– one that President Emmanuel Macron said was the ’emotional highlight’ of the sporting extravaganza.
But on Friday, the highly respected Liberation newspaper quoted multiple
music industry experts who said the July 26th performance was ‘without a shadow of a doubt’ pre-recorded.

In turn, representatives for the Paris 2024 organisers
refused to answer questions on the scandal, despite previously insisting that
the performance was indeed a live one.
‘What we heard on TV was a corrected playback,’ composer and performer Etienne Guéreau told Liberation.

In comments that were republished across French media, a sound engineer who asked to remain anonymous said: ‘It was 100% playback, you can hear it from the first notes.’
Others said it was ‘without a shadow of a doubt’ pre-recorded, as was
a performance by Ms Dion in rehearsals.
A YouTuber musician who uses the name Wings of Pegasus said
the rehearsal and actual performance also sounded exactly
the same – something that is technically impossible, as there will always
be variations between any two versions of a live song.
The Olympics performance was meant to be a triumphant comeback for Ms Dion, who has been battling the
incurable stiff-person syndrome.
Hymne à L’amour was chosen because it was originally sung
by the late French music icon Edith Piaf.
Thousands of fans took to social media to praise Ms Dion, whose greatest hits include ‘My Heart Will Go On’, the theme from the Titanic movie.

It was in 2022 that Ms Dion disclosed that she had
been diagnosed with the neurological disorder stiff-person syndrome which
causes muscles to stiffen and spasm.

Despite heavy rain, many sat through multiple

But Ms Dion’s performance was meant to be a live one, and it has just
been released as such on various streaming platforms.
Ms Dion announced on Instagram on Thursday that the ‘live’ recording was

A billionaire couple have won the right to remove a single tree from the driveway of their lavish $20million mansion after
being blocked by their local council.
Paul Holmes a Court, the son of Australia’s first billionaire Robert
Holmes a Court, and his wife Zara had been at loggerheads with
their local council over a request to remove a single
peppermint tree growing in the middle of their driveway.
The couple bought the four-bedroom mansion in the affluent, tree-lined suburb overlooking Perth’s Freshwater Bay for $20.1million in August.
They wanted to remove the tree but the Shire of Peppermint
Grove refused the request on the grounds the tree was
not dead or deceased.
‘We are very lucky to live here, but I have to say that the tree placement is unusual,’
Ms Holmes a Court previously told a council meeting.
‘I’m quite a reasonable and rational person, but a tree in the middle of the driveway makes it quite tricky to reverse
out.’
The couple enjoyed a breakthrough at a council meeting last week after an alternative motion was unanimously passed that allowed the tree to be removed on the condition they paid
a $2,500 bond before any work was done on the driveway.
They will also need to plant two replacement trees
on their property.

Paul Holmes à Court and his wife Zara won a council
battle to remove a peppermint tree (pictured) from
the driveway of their $20million mansion
Ms Holmes a Court previously claimed the tree’s odd placement also
made it difficult to spot cars turning the corner at a nearby intersection with Bay View Terrace.
After the motion to remove the tree was passed at the meeting, councillor Douglas Jackson said it was a ‘good outcome’.
‘I think it meets both the owners’ wants, or expectation, but also matches the
council’s needs at the same time by ensuring that there is tree cover
on the verge of that property,’ he said.
Peppermint Grove is hoping to implement a policy that would even make it an offence to damage or remove any mature trees on private property without council approval.
Last month, WA Planning Minister John Carey said he hoped the Shire of Peppermint Grove would ‘take a
common sense approach’ to the issue.
‘This is part of the challenge that we do have with local government.
I’ve always been on the record that we need local governments to take a common sense
approach to issues,’ Mr Carey told the West Australian.
‘And I understand people are passionate about trees. But ultimately, we do need local governments to assess the situation and find pragmatic outcomes.’
According to the online listing for the four-bedroom, four-bathroom mansion – which
is built on a corner block along the banks of the Swan River –
the sprawling Federation-style property was built
in around 1904.
The Holmes à Court property was built in around 1904
in Federation ‘Arts and Crafts’ style
The home boast an unparalleled view of the
Swan River overlooking Fresh Water Bay
‘Designed in the rare Federation ‘Arts and Crafts’ style, the home has retained all its elegance and splendour via
lofty ceilings, sweeping verandas, charming decorative arches, casement-style sash windows, and walls of French doors that bathe the home in light, reflecting river views beyond,’ the listing said.
The property also features ‘Plush Champagne-hued carpets’ and
‘cobble-stoned remote garage to accommodate six cars, abundant storage, gym area, double vanity rain-shower
bathroom and climate-controlled wine cellar.’
Mr Holmes a Court is the chief executive of prize-winning wine label Vasse Felix and the brother of Peter Holmes à Court,
who once jointly owned of the South Sydney Rabbitohs with Russell Crowe, and
climate philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court.

LONDON (AP) – The head of an abbey on a monastic Welsh island apologized Tuesday after
a review found that a monk sexually abused children over
several decades « in plain sight » despite repeated complaints raised against him.
The review said victim testimonies dating from the 1970s suggested that Father Thaddeus Kotik, who
died in 1992, was a « serial and prolific » child abuser on Caldey Island, a tiny community home
to Cistercian Order monks off the coast of south Wales.
The scenic island and its abbey are popular tourist attractions.
Victims alleged that Kotik used sweets, chocolate and a tortoise to lure girls
and boys to isolated locations on the island, and that he befriended families living on the island with affection,
gifts and babysitting offers to access the children.
Father Jan Rossey, the abbot of Caldey Abbey, apologized
for a « closed culture of secrecy and cover-up » that kept the abuse
hidden for so long.
« It is clear opportunities were missed to stop the abuse of children. It is particularly heartbreaking to hear children spoke up to adults and no action was taken, »
he said in a statement Tuesday.
Kotik died in 1992 without being charged or
convicted of any of his alleged crimes.
Abuse allegations have been made public since 2017 after six women made a legal
claim stating that Kotik had sexually abused them between 1971 and 1987.
The claim was settled with a financial agreement but the abbey did
not issue an apology.
The independent review was launched earlier this year, when a victims’ campaign group said
around 50 people had come forward with allegations they were abused
by monks on the island.
The review examined allegations made by people who lived on or visited the
island as children, and included accounts of victims being fondled or held too tightly.
One victim said he was raped by Kotik.
« There appears to have been a failure of leadership at the highest level within the Order and Abbey. Serious matters of repeated and frequent allegations of child sexual abuse by (Kotik) were not reported to the statutory authorities as the law of that time required, »
the review said.
Rossey, the new abbot, pledged to create a more open and transparent culture and to put in place safeguarding improvements
on the island.
The Cistercians, who are a stricter offshoot of the Benedictine Order, have been living on Caldey Island for over 1,000 years.
The island promotes itself as a haven of peace and is described on its website as « one of Britain’s holy islands. »

Gaga enhanced her platinum locks with lengthy extensions and arranged them in a half-up/half-down style with a center part.
A portion of her hair was secured in a small chignon at the midpoint of her head and
the loose strands were set in loose waves.
The superstar entertainer wore a full face of matte makeup, complete with pink lipstick.

Gaga is reportedly seeking a $900 million prenup before she walks down the aisle.
And Polansky, who has a $600 million net worth as
head of The Parker Foundation, is on board.
A source close to the couple told In Touch that ‘there are a lot of
assets on both sides, and a prenup will just make everything clear.’
Gaga ‘is worth $900 million, so of course there needs to be a
prenup in place,’ the insider said. ‘And Michael understands that.

DAMASCUS, Dec 10 (Reuters) – After racing from Lebanon to Syria to celebrate the fall of the Assad regime and
making arrangements for his family to follow, 42-year-old Anas Idrees
knew what was next on his list of priorities.
He ventured into the grand Hamidiyeh Souk in old Damascus until he arrived at the renowned Bakdash
ice cream parlor, then ordered a large scoop
of their signature mastic-infused Arabic gelato.
Idrees had last savored it 15 years earlier, before the Syrian civil war made him a refugee.
« I swear to God, it tastes different now, » he said after eating a spoonful.
« It was good before, but it’s changed because now we are happy inside. »
For more than 100 years and through many wars, Bakdash has served up
an Arabic-style of ice cream that is infused
with Sahlab, a flour made from orchid roots and pounded by hand with meter-long
mallets until it takes on a soft, stretchy texture.
A generous heap costs just $1 per bowl, and is served coated in pistachios.
Bakdash is much-loved across Syria, but many Syrians have been unable to visit their capital city since former
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad cracked down on pro-democracy protests in 2011, igniting a 13-year civil war that divided
the country.
In the wake of Assad’s ouster following a lightning rebel advance, tens of thousands
of Syrians have converged on Damascus from across the country and outside its borders.
On Monday, hundreds turned up at Bakdash, many of
them fighters fresh from the battlefield who slung guns around their backs to tuck into
the cool treat that sometimes got caught in long,
unkempt beards.
Ahmed Aslaan, a 22-year-old combatant wearing
green fatigues, said he had not seen Damascus in more
than a decade and enjoying the ice cream
was a perk of his newfound freedom.
« Thank God we achieved our goal. Now we can go around all of Syria in our own car, » he said between bites.
« We were all stuck in a tiny area before, now we have space. »
Co-owner Samir Bakdash said reopening the day after Assad fell was his way to show his joy at
the end of a government that oppressed Syrians
for decades and forced him to pay bribes just to keep his shop open.
He insisted the signature recipe had not changed since his great-grandfather came up with it in the 1890s.
But even regular customers said something felt new.
« It tastes different – it’s delicious and has gotten even better, » said Eman Ghazal, a business
student in her 20s who has been coming to Bakdash since she was a child.
« It’s not just the ice cream, it’s life in general. It’s as if the walls are smiling and the sun has finally come out. » (Reporting by
Timour Azhari in Damascus; Editing by Alex Richardson)

Tim Dillon, who makes a brief appearance in Joker: Folie à Deux, has described
the new sequel as ‘terrible’ and ‘the worst film ever made’.
The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck
(Joker) and Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn), faced negative reviews from critics before its
October 4 release and flopped at the box office.
Tim, 39, who played a guard at Arkham Asylum in the movie, said Todd Philips’s new film has ‘no plot’
and admitted he knew it was ‘going to bomb’
while filming.
Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Tim said: ‘It’s the worst film ever made.
‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was
a lot of talk like, ‘Oh, this was loved by incels.
This was loved by the wrong kinds of people. This sent the wrong kind of message.
Male rage! Nihilism! All these think pieces.
Tim Dillon, who makes a brief appearance in Joker: Folie à Deux, has described the new sequel as ‘terrible’ and ‘the worst film ever
made’
The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck (Joker) and Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn), faced negative
reviews from critics before its October 4 release and flopped at the box office
‘And then I think, ‘What if we went the other way,’ and now they have Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga tap dancing to a
point where it’s insane.’
He continued: ‘It has no plot. We would sit there,
me and these other guys were all dressed in these security outfits because we’re working at the Arkham
Asylum, and I would turn to one of them and we’d hear
this crap and I’d go, ‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is going to bomb, man.’
I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’
‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the
plot? Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable.
That’s how terrible it is.’
Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to social media after
its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.
The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office,
good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie
and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the
cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film,
with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as people are making it out
to be. I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel,
and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’
Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the musical elements were
a lot of fun.’

the sequel took to social media after its release
last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture
One user marvelled that Joker 2 is ‘getting universal hate despite being more interesting and creative than anything marvel has done in years is expected.’
It comes after lead star Lady Gaga was left ‘disappointed’ at the immense flood of negative reactions to Joker:
Folie à Deux, with the singer’s team now keen to quickly push out other projects to
help distract from the furore over the film, insiders claim.
Todd Phillips‘ sequel has bombed, raking in just under $40 million at the domestic box office, and receiving the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history.
Gaga, 38, is reportedly confused at the lack of
love for her turn as Harleen Lee Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, 49, as the Joker – a role that won him the
best actor Oscar in 2019 – in the wake of the standing ovation it received at
the Venice Film Festival last month.
‘Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and
is shocked that people don’t love it after the response it received from critics before it premiered,’ a source exclusively told DailyMail.com.
‘She put so much heart into the movie and has so much respect for the DC comics fan base.’
They added: ‘Her team is quietly looking at other projects they can roll out as they want to move on this from as quickly as possible.’

But despite the lacklustre reception from fans, a second source claimed she is not letting it deter her from returning to the big screen, with the singer said to be eyeing up a Quentin Tarantino movie.
‘She is disappointed that Joker is pretty much a bomb,’ they said.
‘She thought that this film could get her
an Oscar nomination, especially since the first film was such a success and Joaquin won an Oscar.
‘She would now like to land a role in Quentin Tarantino’s next and final film.
Nobody knows what that is going to be, but she wants
to audition.
‘She’s going to lobby hard to get a meeting with him once a
script is presented, it is a bucket list moment
for her to be involved.’
