Joker: Folie À Deux has been branded the ‘most disappointing follow-up to the Oscar-winning movie’ by critics, as they cast doubt on Lady Gaga’s ‘thin’ role in the film following its
release on Friday.

The ‘bleak’ sequel, has also received a tepid
reception from fans, with some claiming Lady Gaga’s career could be

While the same director Todd Phillips was back in the hot seat, critics have said
the sequel is just a ‘repeat’ of the first hit but with an added musical twist.

Most critics have said Todd failed to use Gaga correctly in the movie and claimed she
was only bought in for the musical aspect of it.

While the majority of critics say Joker: Folie À Deux didn’t live up to
expectations, others have dubbed the movie ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’.

Giving the sequel a four star rating, he wrote: ‘This film is audaciously different in style from the original, not as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all the same.

‘Arthur is now behind bars, waiting to see whether he will be judged sane enough
to stand trial for murder, and in the meantime enjoying his celebrity status with fellow prisoners and even the warders, one
of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him

‘Lady Gaga plays Lee, a fellow inmate on her way, we suppose, to becoming Joker’s girlfriend Harley Quinn.
The pair hit it off at a music therapy class, and are soon mutually smitten, but Lee makes it clear that she loves
the dangerously charismatic Joker, ‘clown prince of crime’, not the gloomily introspective Arthur.

‘Which is more real: the psychopath wearing the mask or the vulnerable fellow behind it?

Either way, identity confusion is the theme of this film, which
keeps being billed as a musical. 

‘It’s not, really, although music looms large as an expression of Arthur and Lee’s burgeoning love
for one another. And there are a couple of swooning dance routines
that make them look like psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in La La Land (2016).

‘For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this
sequel doesn’t scale those heady heights, it is still a gripping film about mental
illness; not quite comparable with all-time greats such as Psycho (1960) and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), but not too far
off.’

Lady Gaga is getting back to basics.

Following her panned performance in the flop movie Joker: Folie
à Deux, the New York City native, 38, is releasing a single titled Disease,
set to be released Friday.

Diesase, the first of songs from her forthcoming seventh album,
was teased Tuesday on the Grammy-winning artist’s Instagram
account, as she captioned the image: ‘DISEASE 10.25.’

In a teaser clip from the viewpoint of an approaching vehicle, the actress-singer, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, sported a black mane as she

Lady Gaga is set to release her seventh studio album in February.

Despite lead single Disease stalling on the Hot 100 at No.
27, the 38-year-old is forging ahead with her next album, which she described as
both ‘fun’ and ‘darker.’

Speaking to Vogue magazine about the project, Gaga said that
she’s been focused on the production side of her new songs. 

‘I love producing — I always have — and something that was really important to me making my seventh
studio album was blending live instrumentation with programming,’ she explained.

‘The album is chaotic from a genre perspective —
it is genre-bending, and I think in that way is a deeply personal look into my mind as a
producer and the way I think about music.’

She also said that the album has a ‘darker pop’ sound that’s more in line with her iconic 2009 album,
The Fame Monster. 

However, fans need not be worried that Gaga is going too somber with her
sound. 

‘The album is not extremely serious in that it’s very fun and
meant to be enjoyed at a party, in a club, or at home having personal fun time — to be free of your worries at home or walking through life,’ she insisted.

disappointing reception to lead single Disease

Gaga released the album’s lead single Disease last month to rave reviews from music critics, who lauded it as a return to the star’s roots.

Unfortunately, the acclaim failed to translate to the charts,
with Disease debuting at No. 27 on the Hot 100 – her worst entry for a lead single
in 16 years.

On the bright side, Gaga is currently enjoying one of her biggest hits in years thanks to her Bruno Mars duet, Die
With a Smile. 

The ballad has so far reached No. 2 on the Hot
100 and No. 1 on the Pop Airplay Chart.

It comes after Gaga’s leading role in the disastrous Joker:
Folie à Deux. 

The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck (Joker) and Gaga as Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn), faced negative reviews from
critics before its October 4 release and flopped at the box

Tim, 39, who played a guard at Arkham Asylum in the movie, said Todd Philips’s new film has ‘no plot’ and admitted he knew it was ‘going to
bomb’ while filming. 

Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Tim said:
‘It’s the worst film ever made.

dollar on Wednesday, as investors awaited more stimulus from the world’s second-largest economy and the Federal Reserve’s September meeting minutes due later in the day to

relief to the yuan after a sharp rally to a seven-week high last week.

Spot yuan opened at 7.0650 per dollar and was last trading
12 pips lower than the previous late session close at 7.066.

Prior to the market opening, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) set the
midpoint rate, around which the yuan is allowed to trade in a 2% band, at 7.0568 per dollar, only
3 pips weaker than a Reuters’ estimate.

China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for the first time since Sept.
13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning streak, after officials on Tuesday failed to offer much
new on stimulus plans to revive the economy.
The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far this month, due
to broad dollar strength, but the currency has 0.5% firmed for the year-to-date.

China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for an upside
surprise from expected fiscal stimulus news, said UBS strategists led by Rohit Arora, adding that the offshore yuan’s
near-term risk reward is unattractive. « Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge, » the strategists said.

Nevertheless, market participants are still awaiting additional stimulus measures that could
help further lift China asset sentiment. Citi FX traders
think the offshore yuan could trade well if local equities remain supported, similar to
what happened in Nov. 2022 – Jan. 2023, according to the bank’s note
to clients.

a number of fans of the sequel took to social media over the weekend in defense of the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

A number of fans took to social media to defend the controversial sequel

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking
away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady
Gaga joining the franchise 

Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival, where
it premiered in competition like the first movie and even got a 12-minute standing ovation.

But the homecoming glow was short-lived, and the fragile foundation would crumble
in the coming weeks with its Rotten Tomatoes score dropping from 63 percent
at Venice to 33 percent by its first weekend in theaters. Perhaps
even more surprising were the audience reviews:
Ticket buyers polled on opening night gave the film a deadly D CinemaScore.
Exit polls from PostTrak weren’t any better. It got a meager half star
out of five possible.

‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said Paul Dergarabedian, the
senior media analyst for Comscore. ‘The biggest issue of
all is the reported budget. A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie
would be a solid debut.’

Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film to produce,
though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey it was to make.

Phillips told Variety that it was less than the reported $200 million; Others have it
pegged at $190 million. Warner Bros. released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.
About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.

Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens,
bringing its total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the
next two weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.

Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot,
which added $18.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total
to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s made over $100
million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice  took
third place in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal and
Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out the top five.

The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White Bird, flopped with just $1.5
million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.

Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year,
but Joker’s start is an unwelcome twist for theater owners hoping to narrow
the box office deficit.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it
was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie

Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they
aspired to make something as ‘audacious’ as the first film.

The sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold , as a Joker superfan, and delved
further into the mind of Arthur Fleck, imprisoned at Arkham and awaiting trial for the murders he committed in the first.
It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and dance numbers
to old standards. Gaga even released a companion album called  »Harlequin,’ alongside the film.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans
of the first movie. In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But fans often ignore the advice of critics, especially when it comes to opening their
wallets to see revered comic book characters on the big
screen.

‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.
‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want to know what they´re getting when they´re going to the theater.
They want the tried and true, the familiar.’ 

Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started
with the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical. ‘No fan of the original movie wanted
to see a musical sequel,’ he wrote on Saturday.

The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse,
then about whether it might send the wrong message to the wrong type of person. And yet people still flocked to see
what the fuss was about. Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations,
including best picture and best director, and three wins. It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, until this summer when Marvel’s Deadpool &
Wolverine took the crown.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according
to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

Anyone who knows me has invariably been subject to a spiel about how
much I love Claudia Winkleman. In part, it’s
because she’s so silly, and in part, it’s because I’m a huge fan of everything she presents, from Strictly to The Traitors. 

But even more than any of that, it’s because I’m obsessed with everything she wears.
I’ve spent a fortune copying her exact outfits, from her Sister Jane heart cutout dress to a bedazzled Nadine Merabi blazer that I definitely don’t go

Since 2005, Claudia has worked with stylist Sinead McKeefry to perfect her signature style.
I’d describe it as soft goth: lots of black, velvet and chunky knits,
with a fair few sequins and prints (particularly tartan) thrown in. I’m not
alone in my reverence: there are entire Instagram accounts dedicated to tracking down the presenter’s outfits.

But while they offer incredibly useful style inspo, two issues arise repeatedly:
Claudia’s clothes are usually hugely expensive or sold out (or both).

So when the Strictly host stepped out in a typically preppy black velvet mini dress on Sunday, you’d be forgiven for assuming it was by some top-end
designer. Well, you’d be wrong. The mini dress actually came courtesy of one of our favourite high street brands,
Albaray – and you can pick it up for less than £100.

The dress is made from plush fabric with contrast satin detailing.
The velvet makes it a little festive, perfect for celebratory bashes over
the next few months, particularly when paired
with white stilettos à la Claud. But it could be just as easily dressed down with white trainers or ballet flats and a
trench for a chic office outfit, so you’ll certainly get your wear
out of it.  

Like all of Albaray’s products, it’s ethically made using responsible fabric and sent via a carbon-neutral shipping method, so you
can feel good about the dress’s eco-credentials as well as how it looks.
It’s currently in stock in a few sizes online (and in certain John Lewis concessions)
but like most things Claudia wears, it won’t stick around long.

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday unveiled a zero-tobacco stick for use with its « heat-not-burn » device IQOS, which may help
the company avoid tax and other regulations that affect its tobacco products in some markets.

IQOS heats up small packets of ground up tobacco resembling cigarettes but does not burn them, a process the company says potentially results in fewer health risks compared to smoking.

Now, PMI has developed a range of sticks, which it calls LEVIA, that do not contain tobacco but a « non-tobacco substrate » infused
with nicotine, with flavours including tobacco, menthol with blueberry and peppermint.

Chief Executive Officer Jacek Olczak said during an investor day
presentation that as well as offering another alternative to consumers who may not wish to use tobacco, the
product may avoid the heavy taxes or other controls imposed on its other products.

LEVIA « may not be subject to flavour regulations in some jurisdictions » and « doesn’t fit » in existing fiscal categories, Olczak continued, adding PMI was
in discussions with regulators in some target markets on how
they would approach it.

The company advocates for lower taxes for products referred to by the industry as « reduced risk » compared to
traditional cigarettes.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorised PMI to market IQOS as offering reduced exposure to harmful
chemicals versus smoking, though the World Health Organisation says
there is currently no evidence that heated tobacco has lower health risks than other tobacco
products.

A PMI spokesman declined to provide additional details on when and where LEVIA could launch, or
what substance replaces the tobacco.

Some niche companies have developed heat sticks made from tea leaves
instead of tobacco, which they sell for use with major players’ « heat-not-burn » technology – a headache for big companies that want only their own sticks to be compatible with their devices.

stars failing to pick up nominations for the 83rd annual
Golden Globe awards. 

Lopez’s performance in the sports biopic Unstoppable was ignored as was Streep’s recurring role in the hit series, Only Murders In The Building.

Both were featured in a list of Golden Globe nomination predictions recently compiled by Variety. 

Lady Gaga’s performance in Joker: Folie à Deux also failed to earn a nod; the film,
which flopped at the box office and garnered poor reviews,
saw Gaga play Harleen Lee Quinzel aka Harley Quinn.

Jon M. Chu and Ridley Scott were also surprise omissions from the
Best Director – Motion Picture category, despite respective blockbusters Wicked and Gladiator
II enjoying enormous box office success. 

The filmmaker behind Dune: Part Two, Denis Villeneuve,
also failed to receive a nod in the directing category. 

Saoirse Ronan was another notable snub, failing to receive Golden Globe recognition for her films The Outrun and
Blitz. The film Blitz also did not garner any nods.

The 82nd Golden Globes will take place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on January 5, hosted by Nikki Glaser –
the first woman to solo host the awards. 

While Lopez, Streep, and others were snubbed from the Golden Globes, a slew of
other stars and projects did receive nods.  

Nominations for the 2025 ceremony were announced
Monday morning, with Wicked stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo both receiving nominations for their work in the musical film.

Grande – earning her first ever Golden Globe nomination – features in the category for
Best Supporting Female Actor – Motion Picture nomination courtesy of her
role as Galinda Upland in the fantasy drama.

Arivo has been richly rewarded for her role as green-skinned witch-in-the-making
Elphaba.

British Netflix drama Baby Reindeer has also been acknowledged, with the
Richard Gadd written show featuring in the category for Best Limited Series,
Anthology Series or Television Motion Picture and its
lead actress Jessica Gunning named as Best Supporting Female Actor
– Television.

The show will compete alongside the hugely popular Ripley,
controversial biopic Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story, True Detective:
Night Country, Ripley and The Penguin.

During the upcoming awards ceremony, Cheers legend Ted Danson will receive the Carol
Burnett Award for those who have « made outstanding contributions to television on or off screen » and Viola Davis
will be handed the Cecil B. DeMille Award for achievement in film.
