En termes simples, ce changement signifie que les utilisateurs de YouTube pourront diffuser des vidéos à plus haute résolution tout en utilisant moins de données mobiles.

LE CODEC AV1 N’EST PAS QU’UNE BONNE NOUVELLE
Les avantages de l’AV1 sont évidents, mais il existe un inconvénient potentiel : une consommation plus importante de la batterie sur certains appareils. Le codec AV1 étant plus avancé et plus complexe que les codecs précédents tels que VP9, il nécessite une plus grande puissance de traitement de la part de l’appareil pour décoder et lire correctement la vidéo.
Cette surcharge de calcul peut entraîner une décharge plus rapide de la batterie, en particulier sur les anciens téléphones et tablettes Android qui ne disposent pas d’un décodage matériel dédié à l’AV1. Les utilisateurs devront peut-être être plus attentifs à ajuster les paramètres de qualité vidéo pour trouver le bon équilibre.
Comme l’a d’abord signalé Android Police, Google a confirmé le passage à l’utilisation du décodeur open source libdav1d comme valeur par défaut d’Android pour la lecture des vidéos codées en AV1.
Si certains appareils récents fonctionnant sous Android 12 et plus disposent d’une accélération du décodage AV1 intégrée, d’autres s’appuieront uniquement sur le décodage logiciel, qui est plus gourmand en batterie.
YouTube n’est pas le premier grand service de streaming à adopter l’AV1.
Netflix utilise déjà le codec avancé sur Android depuis un certain temps, les éditeurs de contenu cherchant à tirer parti de ses impressionnantes capacités de compression. Pour l’utilisateur moyen, la mise à jour de YouTube vers AV1 sera probablement un ajout très important.
Il permettra de profiter d’une fidélité et d’une qualité vidéo supérieures à des définitions identiques, voire inférieures, par rapport aux flux encodés avec des codecs plus anciens tels que VP9.
