La journée mondiale de la vue a été célébrée hier au Sénégal à l’instar des autres pays de la communauté internationale. L’édition de cette année a été célébrée au district sanitaire de Malem Hodar dans la région de Kaffrine par la Ministre de la Santé et de l’Action sociale. Selon Dr Marie Khémesse Ngom Ndiaye, au Sénégal, la cécité et les déficiences visuelles sont des problèmes majeurs de santé. En effet, avec une prévalence estimée à 1,42%, on dénombrerait près de 165 000 aveugles et plus de 550 000 malvoyants. « Notre pays s’est inscrit dans une dynamique d’éliminer les cécités évitables. A cet effet, le Programme national de Promotion de la Santé oculaire (PNPSO) a été mis en place pour rendre les soins oculaires disponibles et accessibles », a déclaré la Ministre.
Marie Khémesse Ngom Ndiaye va plus loin en soutenant que plusieurs autres plans stratégiques ont été mis en œuvre dans ce sens pour lutter contre les affections les plus cécitantes que sont la cataracte, le trachome, les vices de réfraction et les cécités de l’enfant. D’après les informations de la Ministre de la Santé et de l’Action sociale, avec 73 centres de soins oculaires recensés en fin 2021, chaque région dispose d’une unité de chirurgie de la cataracte et des unités simples de soins oculaires dans les différents centres de santé.
Des résultats ont été notés dans le cadre de la lutte contre les affections les plus cécitantes. En effet, le trachome qui est la deuxième cause de cécité dans notre pays est en phase d’être éliminé en tant que problème de santé publique. Marie Khémesse Ngom Ndiaye affirme que cette affection n’est plus un problème de santé publique dans 60 districts sanitaires. Quant à la prise en charge de la cataracte, qui est la première cause de cécité au Sénégal avec près de 35 à 50000 cas par an, d’importantes avancées ont été réalisées. «En effet, de 5 112 cas opérés en 2000 nous sommes passés à plus de 22 000 cas opérés en moyenne ces deux dernières années», fait savoir la MSAS.
Malgré ces acquis, la Ministre est revenue sur l’importance de renforcer le système de santé pour la prise en charge précoce et adéquate des maladies cécitantes sur toute l’étendue du territoire national.
