Cette année, 5,3 milliards de téléphones portables seront jetés, selon un rapport du forum international sur les déchets d’équipements électriques et électroniques (DEEE).
Cette estimation, fondée sur les données du commerce mondial, met en évidence le problème environnemental croissant des déchets électroniques.
Selon les recherches, la majorité de la population oublie de recycler leur smartphone. Alors que les minéraux précieux, qui ne sont pas extraits des déchets électroniques, comme le cuivre des fils ou le cobalt des batteries rechargeables, pourraient encore être exploités.

Les téléphones portables obsolètes ne sont que la pointe de l’iceberg de 44,48 millions de tonnes de déchets électroniques mondiaux générés chaque année qui ne sont pas recyclés, selon le Global e-waste monitor 2020.
On estime à 16 milliards le nombre de téléphones portables dans le monde. En Europe, près d’un tiers ne serait plus utilisé. En dehors des smartphones, la DEEE indique que la montagne de déchets électriques et électroniques – des machines à laver et grille-pain aux ordinateurs – atteindra 74 millions de tonnes par an d’ici à 2030.
Un peu plus de 17 % des déchets électroniques dans le monde sont correctement recyclés, mais l’Union internationale des télécommunications des Nations unies s’est fixé pour objectif de porter ce chiffre à 30 % d’ici à l’année prochaine.
