Assainissement-Bilan : La défécation à l’air libre a reculé de 18 points au Sénégal entre 2011 et 2022, selon le ministre

APS- Plus de 5 000 villages sénégalais ont abandonné la pratique de la défécation à l’air libre, qui a ainsi reculé de 18 points, passant de 30% à 12,1 % entre 2011 et 2022, a révélé Serigne Mbaye Thiam, ministre de l’Eau, de l’Assainissement et de l’Hygiène publique.

Grâce à la mise en œuvre de la feuille de route pour l’élimination de la défécation à l’air libre au Sénégal, ‘’ plus de 5 817 villages ont abandonné cette pratique, laquelle est passée de 30% à 12,1 % entre 2011 et 2022, reculant ainsi de 18 points’’, a notamment indiqué Serigne Mbaye Thiam.

Citant le rapport conjoint OMS/UNICEF 2023, l’officiel, qui présidait à Ndiaganiao (Mbour, ouest) la célébration de la journée mondiale des toilettes, a relevé que ‘’3,5 milliards de personnes dans le monde vivent sans toilettes adaptées et 419 millions autres font encore leurs besoins en plein air’’.

Le même document indique également, a-t-il poursuivi, que ‘’deux milliards de personnes, soit un quart de la population mondiale, ne disposent pas, à domicile, d’une installation de base pour se laver les mains à l’eau et au savon’’

Au Sénégal, les efforts consentis par le gouvernement en termes de stratégie, de mobilisation de financements et de réalisation d’ouvrages ont permis de ‘’faire progresser le taux d’accès aux services d’assainissement (…) entre 2011 à 2022’’, a noté Thiam.

Sur cette période, ce taux est “passé de 63,3% à 88,9 % en milieu urbain et de 34,3% à 62,2% en milieu rural, soit des bonds significatifs respectifs de 25 et de 28 points en presque 10 ans’’, a-t-il souligné.

Le taux d’accès global a, dans le même intervalle, grimpé de 49,1 à 74,2%, pendant que la moyenne en Afrique subsaharienne est de 34%, a-t-il encore relevé.

Le ministre a annoncé que pour ce qui est des réalisations physiques, les projets en cours dans plusieurs régions, “permettront, à terme, de doter au moins 70 000 ménages démunis de latrines familiales et d’autres ouvrages d’assainissement’’.

Serigne Mbaye Thiam estime que le thème de l’édition 2023 “Accélérer le changement“, renseigne sur ‘’l’urgence de renforcer l’engagement des acteurs pour faire face aux urgences mondiales de l’assainissement’’.
