Ce n’est pas une surprise, Facebook Gaming est un échec. Depuis son lancement en 2020 au début de la pandémie de Covid-19, la plateforme avait pour ambition de concurrencer le géant Twitch en devenant à la fois un service de streaming vidéoludique, tout en proposant d’un catalogue de mini-jeux plus ou moins réussis. À l’époque, plusieurs streamers avaient même signé un contrat d’exclusivité avec le service, tout en ayant la promesse d’évoluer dans un écosystème en pleine construction.
Finalement, c’est un constat cuisant pour la filiale gaming de la firme américaine. L’arrêt programmé de Facebook Gaming semblait inévitable, ce dernier n’étant pas parvenu à contrer l’hégémonie de Twitch, qui reste seul maitre à bord. La plateforme d’Amazon rassemble encore une très large majorité du public, avec 76,7% des spectateurs au second trimestre 2022, contre seulement 7,9% pour Facebook Gaming rapportait il y a quelques mois l’entreprise StreamLabs.
Facebook veut quand même miser sur les jeux vidéo
Pas question pour autant d’abandonner le gaming. Malgré la mort annoncée sa branche dédiée, un communiqué officiel de l’entreprise détaillait : “Vous pourrez toujours retrouver vos jeux, vos streamers et vos groupes lorsque vous vous rendrez sur la page Jeux de l’application Facebook“. Concrètement, seule l’application dédiée a été retirée des stores en ligne, à la fois sur iOS et sur Android. Les jeux devraient donc rester accessibles depuis la page d’accueil de Facebook, mais les publications annexes liées à l’actualité vidéoludique seront quant à elle vouées à disparaître.
Cet échec pose évidemment question concernant les ambitions de Meta dans le secteur du jeu vidéo. L’entreprise a toutefois annoncé qu’elle comptait concentrer ses efforts sur le développement de son casque de réalité virtuelle Oculus, ainsi que sur ses projets autour du Métavers. Les mondes virtuels sont encore loin d’avoir investi notre quotidien, mais les jeux vidéo pourraient être la première étape d’une démocratisation à grande échelle.
