Google continue la transition vers le Manifest V3, ce « guide d’instruction » à l’intention des extensions pour le navigateur Chrome. Nombre de développeurs ne l’ont pas encore adopté lui préfèrent encore le MV2, pourtant moins sûr et obsolète. Dans un article de blog publié hier, la firme de Mountain View confirme que les extensions pour Chrome utilisant le MV2 seront désactivées dès juin 2024.
C’est problématique, surtout pour les développeurs de bloqueurs de contenu publicitaire sur Chrome, qui estiment que le nouveau manifeste rend leur travail beaucoup plus dur.
La première version du Manifest V3, ce nouveau cadre de permissions et de capacités pour les extensions Chrome promettait, pour des raisons de sécurité et de confidentialité des données des utilisateurs, d’empêcher de nombreux adblockers de fonctionner, mettant à mal toute une industrie. Bien évidemment, la communauté des développeurs s’est initialement insurgée contre cette nouvelle mesure, et le géant californien a depuis tenté de rectifier le tir, en collaborant avec des éditeurs de bloqueurs tels qu’Adblock.

Andrey Meshkov, PDG d’Adguard, témoigne de le désir de bien faire de Google : « avec Manifest V3, nous avons observé l’immense effort que les équipes de Chrome en particulier, mais aussi d’autres navigateurs mettent à travailler sur une plateforme unifiée, et je vois comment ils écoutent les commentaires des développeurs d’extensions […] Nous avons bon espoir que la nouvelle plateforme apportera des avantages substantiels à l’ensemble de l’écosystème des extensions de navigateur ».
Pour faciliter la tâche de ces compagnies, Google propose de nouveaux outils :
_les Offscreen Documents, qui donnent aux extensions l’accès au DOM à utiliser dans divers scénarios tels que la lecture audio
_l’amélioration de la prise en charge du filtrage de contenu grâce à des limites plus généreuses dans l’API declarativeNetRequest
Cela dit, le passage au Manifest V3 est inévitable. Dès « juin 2024, dans Chrome 127 et les versions ultérieures, les utilisateurs verront les extensions Manifest V2 automatiquement désactivées dans leur navigateur et ne pourront plus installer ces extensions ».
