En décortiquant le code de Google Messages version 20231106_01_RC00, les journalistes de 9 To 5 Google ont découvert que la firme de Mountain View prépare une fonctionnalité de profil pour Google Messages. Sera-t-elle propre à l’application de la compagnie ou sera-t-elle proposée au sein des Rich Communication Services, le protocole de messagerie enrichie défini par le consortium GSMA ?
Nul ne peut encore le dire, mais toujours est-il que les bases de cette nouvelle feature sont posées en dur, dans le programme.
Une ligne dans la version la plus récente de Google Messages disponible sur le Play Store a attiré l’attention des fins limiers. On y lit : « choisissez votre nom de profil et votre photo pour que les gens puissent vous reconnaître ». Cela paraît tout simple, pas grand-chose même, mais le code reste mystérieux.
Certains internautes affirment en effet que cette indication est présente depuis plusieurs semaines dans la messagerie de Google, et que l’interface, bien que présente, n’est pas activée.

Un membre de Reddit s’avance à une explication : « en supposant que cela fonctionne comme sur les autres applications, vous créez un profil, avec probablement votre nom, email, photo, etc., puis vous décidez qui peut le voir, probablement “tout le monde”, “seulement les contacts sauvegardés”, “Personne”, etc. Donc, si vous avez choisi “tout le monde”, […] dès que quelqu’un vous contactera sur Google messages, il affichera les informations de profil que vous avez sauvegardées ».
Notons que Google est en retard sur les messageries instantanées lorsqu’il s’agit de la gestion des profils. L’application IM la plus populaire au monde, WhatsApp, est en train de préparer un profil alternatif qui permettra aux utilisateurs de mieux protéger leurs données personnelles, et de mieux faire la distinction entre communications personnelles et privées.
