A l’instar de la communauté internationale, le Bureau régional de l’Organisation des Nations unies pour l’éducation, la science et la culture (UNESCO) Afrique de l’Ouest basé à Dakar, l’Institut Panos Afrique de l’Ouest (IPAO), Article 19 Afrique de l’Ouest, la Cellule Norbert Zongo pour la promotion du journalisme d’investigation en Afrique de l’Ouest (CENOZO) et l’Association des journalistes pour la transparence dans les ressources extractives et le préservation de l’environnement (AJTREPE) vont conjointement célébrer, le 03 mai 2024, à Dakar, la 31ème édition de la Journée mondiale de la liberté de la presse placée sous le thème : « La presse au service de la planète: le journalisme face à la crise environnementale ».
A cet effet, une conférence de presse est prévue à la Place du souvenir africain, à partir de 9h00.
De façon plus spécifique, les acteurs des médias, de l’environnement et des pouvoirs publics vont discuter des « types de journalisme à valoriser au Sénégal pour mieux rendre service à la planète qui fait face à une crise climatique ».
Cette thématique replace l’information comme élément moteur d’une réponse globale, transfrontalière, locale et sectorielle au dérèglement climatique.
L’objectif de la journée mondiale de la liberté de la presse 2024 est donc d’encourager les médias à jouer leur rôle de renforcement de la citoyenneté environnementale et de questionner en même temps la durabilité des politiques publiques face au péril climatique, lit-on dans un communiqué transmis à la presse.
En effet, le déficit d’information accentue la vulnérabilité et compromet les capacités de résilience des communautés face aux chocs climatiques.
De plus, ce n’est que lorsque la population aura largement admis l’existence des problèmes climatiques qu’elle s’engagera, individuellement ou collectivement, à œuvrer pour des solutions pérennes.
Par ailleurs, l’Objectif de développement durable (ODD) 13 met en exergue la nécessité d’informer, de sensibiliser et de mobiliser tous les citoyens, particulièrement les communautés les plus vulnérables qui, pour la plupart du temps, n’ont pas accès à la bonne information pour agir en conséquence.
La rencontre regroupera une quarantaine de journalistes, de responsables de médias, de leaders d’organisations professionnelles de médias, de leaders d’organisation de la société civile de défense de l’environnement, des leaders d’organisations de femmes, des décideurs politiques et des experts, a conclu le communiqué.
