La Nasa a été convaincue par l’ensemble des essais WDR réalisés avec le SLS. Vendredi, elle a déclaré que le lanceur était prêt pour son premier vol d’essai qui pourrait avoir lieu à l’intérieur d’une fenêtre de tir qui s’ouvrira le 23 août et se fermera le 6 septembre. Cette mission, Artemis I, consistera en un vol inhabité de la capsule Orion autour de la Lune.
Les différents essais et répétitions de chronologie de lancement avec remplissage du lanceur SLS (WDR, Wet Dress Rehearsal) sont terminés. Dans un communiqué, la Nasa se satisfait de la tournure des événements et s’est dite convaincue que le lanceur géant, construit par Boeing, est fin prêt pour son vol d’essai et la mission Artemis I. Les équipes de Boeing et de la Nasa vont maintenant procéder aux préparatifs du lancement de ce vol qui donnera le coup d’envoi des missions du programme lunaire Artemis qui doit ramener les Américains sur la surface lunaire.
Cela dit, une petite fuite d’hydrogène a tout de même empêché la Nasa et Boeing de réaliser des répétitions jusqu’à l’instant T moins 9 secondes, juste avant l’allumage des quatre moteurs principaux RS-25 de l’étage principal. Au plus loin, le compte à rebours s’est arrêté à T moins 29 secondes. Bien que la durée des répétitions ne soit pas allée aussi loin que les responsables du programme le souhaitaient, la Nasa et Boeing ont tout de même déclaré que la réception WDR avait atteint suffisamment d’objectifs pour passer aux préparatifs finaux du lancement.
