Madiambal Diagne, le président de l’Union internationale de la presse francophone (UPF), a ouvert les 50es Assises de la presse francophone par un discours. Il a d’abord remercié le chef de l’État, Son Excellence Macky Sall, et les autorités présentes à la cérémonie qui s’est tenue à Diamniadio.
Le président de l’UPF a rappelé que c’étaient les troisièmes assises organisées au Sénégal. Dans son discours, Madiambal Diagne a félicité le président Sall pour ses réalisations depuis son accession au pouvoir. Il a aussi dit que la question sur leur responsabilité professionnelle et éditoriale ne manquera pas d’être au cœur des échanges autour du thème « Médias, paix, sécurité ».
Il s’est ainsi incliné devant la mémoire de «quelque 140 journalistes et collaborateurs de médias tués au cours de l’année 2023, dans le cadre de leurs fonctions ».
Madiambal Diagne a aussi répondu à ceux qui disaient que «l’UPF tient des assises dans un pays dont le classement s’est déprécié au regard du respect des droits des journalistes », disant que l’indépendance de l’UPF n’était plus discutable et que son Comité international est assez sélectif quant aux critères de choix d’un pays hôte de ses assises.
Il explique que toutes ces appréhensions sont dues au fait que dernièrement, il y a eu des agressions contre des groupes de médias, des journalistes qui ont vu leurs domiciles, leurs lieux de travail et leurs véhicules vandalisés. «Ils ont été menacés, intimidés», regrette le président de l’UPF qui accuse certains opposants d’être à l’origine de cette situation.
« On est dans une situation où les loups prédateurs de la liberté de la presse sont bien identifiés au sein d’une opposition politique qui cherche à imposer, par la violence, sa façon de voir les choses ».
