Le Sénégal compte sur son sol, à la date du 1er août, 12 430 détenus. Parmi ces derniers, on relève 320 femmes, 130 mineurs et 1130 ressortissants de pays étrangers.
Cette population carcérale est répartie dans les 37 prisons du pays. Elle est formée de deux catégories. D’un côté, ceux qui ont été jugés et condamnés (6443 personnes). De l’autre, ceux qui sont en détention préventive (5987).
La Maison d’arrêt et de correction de Rebeuss concentre le plus grand nombre de détenus. Ils sont près de 2500. L’effectif a presque doublé en vingt ans.
Si on compare ces chiffres de la population carcérale avec ceux rendus publics le 20 décembre 2021 par le directeur de l’administration pénitentiaire, le colonel Jules Bertrand Bocandé, on note une baisse des effectifs dans les prisons et une hausse des détentions préventives.
A l’époque, 13 561 personnes (contre 12 430 en ce moment) étaient incarcérées dans les prisons sénégalaises. Parmi ces détenus, 5437 étaient en détention préventive (contre 5987) pour 8124 condamnés (contre 6443).
Les derniers chiffres de la population carcérale ont été livrés par l’inspecteur de l’Administration pénitentiaire, Mohamed Lamine Diop, sur le plateau de l’émission «Balance» (Walf TV). Ils ont été repris par Walf Quotidien dans son édition de ce mercredi.
