Ce qui fait dire au Professeur Moussa Seydi que l’Afrique est toujours en retard malgré ces progrès, parce qu’il n’y a que 2,4% de chercheurs mondiaux qui sont africains.
« Moins de 1% des brevets sont détenus par les Africains. Nous participons à moins de 4% de la littérature scientifique mondiale. Il y a des progrès qui ont été faits, mais il reste beaucoup à faire pour combler le gap », a-t-il déclaré dans un entretien avec “Bes Bi”.
Quid de l’impact de ces recherches sur les systèmes de santé ? Pr. Seydi donne un point de vue du clinicien. « Par rapport à l’utilisation de l’azytromicine et de l’hydroxy chloroquine dans le Covid, il y a des articles qui ont montré que c’était efficace in vitro. Une étude préliminaire a montré que cela pouvait marcher et nous avions pris l’option de l’utiliser », a-t-il précisé.
Il ajoute : « Et après avoir utilisé ce médicament, à peu près sur 1000 malades, nous avons fait une étude rigoureuse qui nous a montré que cette association était efficace et bien tolérée. Donc, cela nous autorisait à continuer le traitement et pas pour des recommandations internationales. Nous l’avions fait pour nous-mêmes. Mais le contexte a bien changé, et depuis lors, cette association n’est plus recommandée pour plusieurs raisons. On ne sait pas si cette combinaison marche sur Omicron. On sait qu’il y a des traitements qui marchent sur Delta par exemple, mais qui ne marche pas sur Omicron. On sait que le vaccin est un peu moins efficace sur Omicron».
