Directrice de Special Olympics Sénégal, une organisation œuvre pour l’intégration par le sport des personnes vivant avec une déficience intellectuelle, Rajah a partagé avec nous la vie des athlétes et leurs quotidiens. Invitée dans l’émission Elles Font le Sport, elle fait part des réussites de ces athlètes qui selon elle ont une « intelligence spéciale ».
Quels sports pratiquent vos athlètes et comment les accompagnez-vous ?
Ils sont polyvalents et pratiquent plusieurs sports. Si je prends l’exemple de Gérard, il joue au football, au basket, pratique l’athlétisme et même le breakdance. Dans notre prise en charge, nous leur faisons découvrir plusieurs disciplines avant de leur laisser le choix. Ils optent ensuite pour les sports où ils sont le plus à l’aise et où ils ont de meilleures chances de briller lors des compétitions internationales.
Combien d’athlètes encadrez-vous aujourd’hui et dans quelles régions êtes-vous présents ?
Nous avons actuellement plus de 3 000 athlètes répartis sur plusieurs régions du Sénégal. Nous ne sommes pas encore présents dans l’Est, mais nous travaillons à y être implantés.
Comment identifiez-vous et intégrez-vous de nouveaux athlètes ?
Nous effectuons des visites à domicile avec nos coachs bénévoles pour identifier les localités où nous pourrions intervenir. En amont, nous échangeons avec les autorités locales et les familles.
Ce n’est pas toujours facile, car certains parents ont tendance à cacher leurs enfants vivant avec une déficience.
Mais les mentalités évoluent, car ils constatent les bienfaits du sport sur leur enfant. L’épanouissement, le développement de compétences et la médiatisation jouent un rôle clé. Voir un athlète de Special Olympics mis en avant change le regard des familles et de la société.
Comment décririez-vous les capacités de vos athlètes ?
Ils ont une déficience intellectuelle, mais je dirais surtout qu’ils ont une intelligence spéciale. Dès qu’ils réalisent qu’ils peuvent réussir, leur progression est fulgurante. Ils ne font rien à moitié, ce sont de véritables guerriers.
À chaque compétition, ils visent la médaille d’or, chacun avec ses propres motivations. Notre rôle est d’encourager et de stimuler cette intelligence spéciale pour un épanouissement total.
