Le Pr Felwine Sarr, universitaire, écrivain et membre de l’équipe en charge de la restitution du patrimoine culturel africain a animé avant-hier, mercredi 15 Juin, une conférence à l’Université Gaston Berger de Saint-Louis pour partager les résultats de sa mission avec les étudiants.
Selon l’économiste, 90 000 objets ont été quantifiés pour la France en vue d’être restitués aux pays africains. Cependant, a-t-il rappelé, ces derniers se doivent de relever un certain nombre de défis notamment la demande de disposition de ces objets, la conscientisation des jeunes aux enjeux et la mise en place de lieux d’accueil.
Selon lui, le Sénégal a réclamé la restitution de seulement quelques objets parmi plus de 2200 identifiés mais évalue à plus de 10 000, les objets ayant fait l’objet de demande de restitution en 2019 provenant de sept (7) pays différents.
« La restitution du patrimoine culturel africain est importante parce qu’elle permet à l’Afrique de se réapproprier sa mémoire, son histoire et de récupérer les traces qui nous ont manquées et de les réintégrer dans la fabrique du présent« , a fait savoir Pr Felwine Sarr.
Les sociétés africaines, a-t-il poursuivi, ont besoin de toutes leurs ressources spirituelles et artistiques, de la créativité de leurs anciens, de leurs visions du monde, et ont aussi besoin que les jeunes générations sachent ce que les ancêtres ont produit. L’enseignant-chercheur va même plus loin dans sa réflexion : « on a besoin que les jeunes générations réinterprètent ces objets et deviennent à nouveau créatrices et créatives à partir de cette histoire. Donc, il y a beaucoup d’enjeux qui sont culturels, historiques, intellectuels, politiques, sociaux, entre autres ».
Ces objets, a-t-il précisé, ont été pris sur plus d’un siècle et demi et le Bénin a reçu 26 trésors royaux. Cette conférence qu’il a animée à l’Université Gaston Berger de Saint-Louis s’inscrit dans le cadre de l’organisation des journées scientifiques de l’Ufr CRAC (Civilisations, Religions, Arts et Communication). Plusieurs autres conférences sont au programme des activités qui se dérouleront ces trois jours dans ce temple du savoir et au niveau de l’Institut Culturel Français.
