Si cela donne une impression de déjà vu, c’est sans doute parce que cette nouvelle fonctionnalité proposée par WhatsApp est très largement inspirée par ce qui existe déjà chez les concurrents. Google Meet, Zoom, et plus récemment Apple avec FaceTime, proposent déjà une fonction similaire.
Le bouton permettant de générer un lien d’appel sera intégré en haut de l’onglet Appels de l’application. Les liens créés pourront être partagés directement dans une conversation WhatsApp, mais pourront aussi être envoyés par SMS, e-mail, etc. Par ailleurs, les liens d’appels seront automatiquement désactivés après 90 jours sans activité. Néanmoins, il semblerait que les participants n’utilisant pas WhatsApp, soient invités à télécharger l’application pour rejoindre un appel depuis un lien. Contrairement à la solution proposée par Apple dans FaceTime, il semble pour l’instant qu’un compte WhatsApp soit nécessaire pour pouvoir rejoindre un appel à partir d’un lien. Une obligation qui diminuerait largement l’intérêt d’une telle fonctionnalité.
Profitant de cette annonce, Mark Zuckerberg, le patron de Meta, a également indiqué que des tests étaient en cours sur la possibilité de passer des appels vidéo en groupe chiffrés intégrant jusqu’à 32 participants. Au cours des derniers mois, WhatsApp a multiplié le déploiement de nouvelles fonctionnalités pour tenter de garder ses utilisateurs captifs. Parmi celles-ci, WhatsApp a par exemple renforcé ses options de sécurité en permettant, par exemple, de cacher son statut en ligne. L’application de messagerie a par ailleurs rendu son utilisation plus souple en autorisant par exemple ses utilisateurs à connecter jusqu’à quatre appareils en plus de leur smartphone grâce à la fonction multi-device déployée il y a quelques semaines.
