À l’occasion de sa visite à Dakar, le Conseiller du Département d’État américain, Derek Chollet est revenu sur la coopération bilatérale entre Washington et Dakar. Pour permettre à 100 000 agriculteurs sénégalais à avoir accès aux intrants agricoles, M. Chollet a annoncé une aide de 12 millions de dollars additionnels, soit plus de 7 milliards de FCFA de son pays.
Derek Chollet est le Conseiller politique principal du secrétaire d’Etat Antony Blinken, sur toutes les questions internationales relevant du Département d’Etat américain. Il était à Dakar pour renforcer le partenariat stratégique entre Washington et Dakar. Le Conseiller du Département d’État américain, qui a fait face à la presse, mercredi, s’est réjoui du renforcement des relations diplomatiques et économiques entre les deux pays.
D’après lui, les Etats-Unis vont continuer à travailler ensemble avec le Sénégal sur plusieurs objectifs parmi lesquels la sécurité alimentaire. Les pays africains, à l’image du Sénégal, sont les plus impactés par la sécurité alimentaire, les pénuries d’engrais ainsi que la flambée des prix des denrées, dues à la crise russo-ukrainienne. Le gouvernement de Biden compte apporter son soutien, afin d’atténuer les effets de l’insécurité alimentaire au Sénégal. « En matière d’agriculture, le Sénégal est un important partenaire. Nous travaillons collectivement pour atténuer les impacts de la guerre.
Le gouvernement américain par le biais de l’Usaid va fournir 12 millions de dollars additionnels en aide au développement. Ce financement va aider 100 000 agriculteurs sénégalais à avoir accès aux engrais à des prix abordables mais également faciliter les financements des intrants agricoles en introduisant des pratiques agricoles », a annoncé M. Chollet. Ce montant va également aider les agriculteurs à augmenter la production des céréales locales.
Depuis le début de la guerre en Ukraine, les Etats-Unis ont déjà fourni 2, 8 milliards de dollars d’assistance alimentaire à travers le monde. A plus long terme, ils vont engager plus de 11 milliards de dollars, dans les cinq prochaines années, afin de juguler les menaces contre la sécurité alimentaire et la nutrition à travers le monde. « Une bonne partie de ce montant se fera par le biais du programme Feed the future de l’Usaid. Et 16 des 20 pays choisis se trouvent en Afrique dont le Sénégal », a-t-il ajouté.
