C’est le cas de la légende de Liverpool Souness qui n’est pas convaincue après trois matchs de Premier League pour les Blues malgré sa très grosse performance lors du match nul (2-2) face à Tottenham où le Sénégalais a ouvert le score avec une superbe volée. Souness a tenu Koulibaly responsable de l’égalisation de Harry Kane à la dernière minute pour les Spurs – et l’expert n’a pas vu grand-chose pour s’exciter à Elland Road où Koulibaly a été expulsé en recevant un deuxième carton jaune pour avoir retenu Joe Gelhardt à la 84e minute alors que Chelsea perdait déjà 3-0.
S’adressant à Talk SPORT, Souness pense que le joueur de 31 ans a du mal à s’adapter à l’intensité de la Premier League par rapport à la Serie A. « Je sais que ce n’est que tôt, mais j’ai vu quelque chose sur Koulibaly la semaine dernière lorsque Kane a marqué l’égalisation », a déclaré Souness. « Chelsea a signé Koulibaly pour ce genre de ballon. Il aurait dû sauter pour dégager la balle, mettre sa tête dessus ou écarter les joueurs devant lui. Il a 31 ans – je pensais qu’il était ce joueur grand, fort et agressif qui attaquerait tout dans la boîte. Il ne l’a pas fait dans ce match. Je lui aurais dit : ‘’C’est pour ça qu’on t’a signé !’’ ».
Il a poursuivi son intervention en pointant du doigt l’âge du Sénégalais. « Je ne dis pas que c’est cela qui lui est arrivé… mais quand vous avez plus de 30 ans, vous commencez à vous demander si ce défi est encore pour vous. Il doit réaliser qu’il joue en Premier League. Il devra relever ce défi », s’est longuement exprimé Souness pour donner ses impressions sur KK. Une critique qui vient conforter les propos de Benitez qui avait émis les mêmes craintes après la signature du champion d’Afrique à Chelsea.
