Comment vous avez eu l’idée de rédiger ce livre ?
Ce livre a été écrit durant la période du Covid-19, puisque tout le monde s’interrogeait sur l’avenir du monde. Je me suis dit que le slogan c’est «Restez chez vous», mais qu’il ne fallait pas rester sans rien faire. Et je me suis dit, pourquoi ne pas faire une rétrospective de la vie et écrire quelque chose qu’il faudrait laisser à la postérité, parce que chacun de nous à quelque chose à raconter. J’avoue que je n’avais jamais écrit avant. Cependant, j’avais commencé à faire des recherches sur ma généalogie, donc je me suis dit qu’il faudrait en parler pour que la famille Djalobé de Kidira puisse connaître son histoire, et les ramifications de la famille des Djalobé de Kidira et du Boundou. J’ai fait des investigations, j’ai interrogé des anciens, mais également des connaisseurs qui m’ont retracé la vie de la famille Djalobé. Je suis Torodoo de la grande famille des Djalobé, à l’image de Samba Diallo. J’ai lu et relu L’aventure ambiguë de Cheikh Hamidou Kane. On est de la même famille, mais il m’a fallu faire des recherches pour découvrir que nous sommes de la même famille des Djalobé. Les Kane et les Diallo, ce sont les mêmes. C’est une déformation Kane Diallo qui nous a amenés à Diallo. Nous venons tous du Fouta, du même terroir.
Pourquoi Soupir de Torodoo comme titre de votre ouvrage ?
Au début, je n’avais pas de titre en tête. Quand j’ai avancé dans le manuscrit et que je l’ai fait lire à un ami, ce dernier m’a proposé ce titre. Et ça vous ramène à la généalogie, à moi-même, c’est-à-dire il faudrait que je sache qui je suis. C’est ce que disait Senghor : «Enracinement et ouverture.» On ne peut pas construire quelque chose de durable aujourd’hui et demain sans s’appuyer sur son passé. Il faudrait d’abord se connaître et à partir de là, s’ouvrir au reste du monde.
S’agit-il d’un livre autobiographique ?
Oui il y a une dose d’autobiographie. Ça parle de ma vie privée et de la politique. Il y a une dose de fiction, parce que je ne veux pas égratigner certains qui ont été des compagnons, qui sont des hommes de valeur. Il faut faire un témoignage élogieux sur eux. Quand il s’agit de dire parfois certaines vérités, tout n’est pas bon à dire. Il y a une façon de le dire et parfois, certains ne se reconnaissent pas dans ce qu’on dit. On ne se déshabille pas complétement quand on parle de soi-même. On utilise la fiction pour agrémenter un peu le récit. Il y a de la pudeur.

La vie n’est pas un long fleuve tranquille. Il y a toujours des moments de joie et des moments de tristesse. C’est ce qui fait le charme de la vie. Mais chaque étape de la vie correspond à un certain nombre d’évènements. L’événement qui a un peu attristé ma vie, c’est le décès de mon papa très tôt. Au moment où tout le monde fêtait la fête de la Korité, j’étais dans la tristesse. Il est décédé très tôt un jour de la Korité, c’était en 1965, j’étais encore très jeune. Ça, c’est un moment de tristesse qui a plongé non pas seulement ma famille dans la douleur et la tristesse, mais tout le Boundou, eu égard à l’homme qu’il était, de par sa générosité et son commerce facile. Ça a été un moment de tristesse pour tous les autres. Ce sont les épreuves de la vie. Dans la politique, on a des moments de joie, des moments de tristesse.
Et vos études dans tout cela ?
A l’école, parfois ça marche, parfois ça ne marche pas. Quand je n’étais pas orienté en classe de seconde par exemple, je ne pouvais pas l’imaginer. Ils disaient que j’étais âgé. En général, les gens diminuaient leur âge. Mais moi j’ai laissé mon âge tel quel, bien je sois allé tardivement à l’école, j’avais plus de sept ans. C’était dans les années 62-63. J’étais troisième au niveau régional au Brevet. Je n’ai pas poursuivi parce que j’ai connu une année sabbatique forcée, en 1975. Etant au fin fond du Sénégal, je ne connaissais même pas l’existence d’écoles privées. J’ai entendu dire qu’il y avait la possibilité de faire la capacité en Droit à l’université de Dakar, en deux ans, et après, si on a une bonne moyenne, d’aller en année de licence. C’est comme ça que je suis venu à Dakar en 1976, pour faire la capacité en Droit à l’université. J’avais une bonne moyenne avec une mention et je me suis inscrit en année de licence sans le Bac. La capacité en Droit, c’est un diplôme d’équivalence qui m’a permis d’accéder à l’université et j’ai fait un troisième cycle à l’université de Limoges.
Voulez-vous donner votre exemple à la jeunesse sénégalaise de ne jamais baisser les bras, de croire en son étoile pour réussir ?
Effectivement. La première chose, c’est qu’il faut se fixer un objectif, se donner les moyens d’atteindre cet objectif. La deuxième chose, c’est que la vie est un éternel combat. Il ne faut jamais se décourager et il faut lutter. S’il y a de la persévérance, on peut arriver à ces objectifs-là. La jeunesse doit d’abord se connaître, connaître qui elle est, s’inscrire dans ses valeurs et après, il faut qu’elle lutte. Je ne parle pas d’aller dans les arènes, même si la lutte est un sport qui est noble. Je dis qu’il faut lutter, c’est un éternel combat. Même s’il y a des échecs, ce sont des expériences, ce sont des leçons apprises pour être valorisées et aller de l’avant.
