Cela fait 25 ans jour pour jour que Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh n’est plus. Cependant il reste l’absent le plus présent. Son sourire était communicatif et dégageait une certaine aura. Un bonnet rouge souvent sur sa tête , le chapelet restait toujours le fidèle compagnon du fils d’El Hadj Malick Sy, pionnier du tidjanisme au Sénégal, et de Sokhna Safiyatou Niang, Abdou Aziz Sy, né en 1904 à Tivaouane. Dans sa jeunesse, il fit de longues études islamiques y apprenant notamment le Coran et son exégèse, le droit islamique malikite, la langue arabe, la théologie asharite, le soufisme et les relations humaines.
Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh accéda au titre de khalife de la Tidjanya au Sénégal le 29 mars 1957, après la mort de ses frères aînés Seydi Ababacar Sy et El Hadj Mouhamadou Mansour Sy, eux-mêmes khalifes, et tous deux décédés quasi simultanément.
Son surnom Dabakh (« il est généreux » en wolof) est dû à sa grande générosité et à son ouverture. Durant son khalifat, il fit de nombreux voyages, notamment au Maroc, en Arabie saoudite, aux États-Unis, en France, en Mauritanie, suite aux nombreuses sollicitations qu’il reçut, en rapport avec la haute maîtrise qu’il avait du savoir islamique.Son discours à la Mecque en 1965, au congrès islamique, où il fut remarqué, non seulement pour sa maîtrise de la langue arabe mais aussi pour la pertinence et la haute portée de son discours, reste encore dans la mémoire du tijanisme en Afrique.
Au pays de la Teranga, il œuvra beaucoup dans le domaine agricole et
reçut en 1965 une médaille dans ce domaine. C’était aussi un grand commerçant. Doué en chant et en poésie, il mena plusieurs fois, avec sa voix caractéristique, les chœurs religieux lors de la nuit du Mawlid, fête de la naissance du prophète Mouhamed (PSL).
Mame Abdou comme l’appelait affectueusement les sénégalais n’est plus ,mais ses enseignements et discours continueront d’inspirer la nouvelle génération.
