La surdité demeure un problème de santé publique au Sénégal, dont les écoles comptent quelque 800.000 malentendants, alerte le Professeur Issa Cheikh Ndiaye, président de la Société sénégalaise d’ORL.
‘’On n’a pas un programme de prise en charge de la surdité, mais nous avons eu à faire des dépistages dans les écoles pour avoir une idée de l’incidence de la surdité au Sénégal. Et lors de nos dernières activités dans les écoles, on a dénombré 800 mille malentendants. C’est un réel problème de santé publique’’, a-t-il indiqué.
Il a sonné cette alerte en rencontrant la presse, en perspective du congrès conjoint qu’organisent l’African Society et la Société sénégalaise d’ORL, les 24 et 25 juin prochains, à l’université Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD), de Dakar.
‘’La surdité, c’est un gros problème au Sénégal et elle nécessite une prise en charge. Et le congrès nous permettra de débattre sur ces différents problèmes, avec plus de 300 spécialistes et universitaires venant d’Afrique et d’Europe’’, a ajouté le professeur Ndiaye.
Le Professeur Issa Cheikh Ndiaye indique que l’intérêt accordé à cette pathologie au Sénégal, remonte à quelques années seulement. ‘’Et nous allons essayer de voir comment apporter à ces malentendants des soins adaptés à leurs maux’’, a-t-il déclaré.
‘’Si c’est un élève, la maladie peut l’empêcher même de bien suivre ses études. Pour faire la chirurgie sur la surdité profonde, il faut débourser au moins 10 millions FCfa’’, a-t-il précisé.
Il a lancé un appel au ministère de la Santé afin qu’il aide les familles des sourds, rappelant que la surdité est ‘’un handicap (…) qu’on peut traiter’’.
Il a précisé que le Sénégal dispose d’une cinquantaine de médecins Orl. ‘’Même si ces spécialistes ne suffisent pas, il faut reconnaître quand même que beaucoup de régions aujourd’hui, disposent d’un spécialiste’’.
Le congrès va débattre de quatre thèmes, dont les cancers ORL, les problèmes de la surdité, les urgences ORL.
‘’C’est le cancer de la gorge qui domine en ORL. Il y aura un symposium dédié spécialement au cancer de la gorge’’, a-t-il indiqué.
‘’ Il y a des études qui ont été faites, ici, au Sénégal et qui montrent qu’à peu près 27 % de l’ensemble des cancers, sont des cancers de la gorge. Et ce cancer n’épargne même pas les enfants’’, a-t-il alerté.
