Le préfet de Ziguinchor a suspendu d’autorité l’organisation des activités en rapport avec le Kankourang, ce sosie et masque représentant un être surnaturel protecteur, dans la culture mandinka, une communauté ethnique fortement présente en Afrique, particulièrement dans la sous-région ouest-africaine. L’arrêté préfectoral date de seulement ce 26 septembre, en pleine commémoration du 20ème anniversaire du naufrage du Joola.
En effet, il s’agit de l’arrêté n° 00154/PDZG portant interdiction temporaire d’organiser des activités liées au Kankourang.
Dans l’article premier de son arrêté, l’autorité préfectorale de Ziguinchor a indiqué qu’« est interdite jusqu’à nouvel ordre, pour des raisons de sécurité et de préservation de l’ordre public, l’organisation de toutes activités liées au Kankourang dans la commune de Ziguinchor ».
Le Préfet de Ziguinchor Chérif Mouhamadou Moctar Blondin Ndiaye d’ajouter au niveau du second article que :« Le maire de la commune et le commissaire central de Ziguinchor sont chargés, chacun en ce qui le concerne, de l’exécution du présent arrêté qui sera enregistré, publié et communiqué partout ou besoin sera », dit-l’arrêté.
Dimanche 25 septembre vers 23 heures, un garçon a succombé à ses blessures à l’hôpital régional de Ziguinchor, suite à une bagarre au cours d’un « diambadong » (danse des feuilles), liées aux activités du kankourang. La victime a reçu un coup de hache.
Depuis plusieurs millénaires, le Kankourang a traversé des générations et des générations de cultures mandinka. Il y est considéré comme étant un être surnaturel qui veille et protège de jeunes initiés masculins dans la brousse mais aussi dans les contrées. Parfois, les services du Kankourang sont sollicités pour assurer la justice et la sécurité voire le maintien d’ordre dans les villes et villages d’alors.
C’est en 2008 que, après avoir été proposé en 2005 par le Sénégal, le Kankourang est élevé au rang de patrimoine immatériel de l’UNESCO.
Depuis lors, toutes les socio-cultures pouvaient se l’approprier. Toutefois, la mission originelle du Kankourang semble complétement dévoyée par de plus en plus d’organisateurs d’activités liées à ce masque mythique. Au point que plusieurs cas de violences y compris physiques ont été enregistrés ça et là, parfois avec mort d’hommes.
C’est le cas par exemple il y a seulement 48 heures, soit le dimanche 25 septembre, dans la commune de Ziguinchor. En effet, suite à une bagarre avec vraisemblablement usage d’armes blanches, comme parfois il y en a dans la commune de Ziguinchor, lors d’un « Diambadong » (Danse des feuilles, en Mandinka) un jeune homme aurait été poignardé avant de succomber à ses blessures à l’hôpital régional de Ziguinchor. Le drame se serait passé au quartier
Djirigho, situé à l’ouest de la capitale sud du pays
C’est, justement, dès le lendemain de ce drame que le préfet de Ziguinchor a pris cet arrêté. Lequel n’est d’ailleurs pas le premier du genre en l’espace de 10 ans. Il a été également envoyé au gouverneur de Ziguinchor, au président du tribunal de grande instance de Ziguinchor, au président du conseil départemental de Ziguinchor et à l’ensemble des délégués de quartier de Ziguinchor qui en sont tous des ampliataires.
